Is stinginess the most unattractive character flaw

in a potential partner?

And could you share stories of stinginess that turned you off?

OP posts:
TheMythicalChicken · 06/06/2018 01:42

Yes, I think it is. I really don't like stinginess and feel it can be a form of mental illness.

I would also like to know why stingy people seem immune to the cold. Every single stingy person I know refuses to believe that it is ever cold enough to necessitate putting the heating on.

I could not date a stingy man. Sorry.

MakeItStopNeville · 06/06/2018 01:45

But how do you know if they're stingy or just couldn't afford the heating?! I don't know if I just live in a different world but I'd feel sorry for anyone who didn't put their heating on.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/06/2018 01:47

Lack of sense humour for me.

Then being a 'no' person rather than a 'yes' person. That includes nasty stuff like sexism because it's all about saying 'no' to the world.

Then stinginess.

Puffycat · 06/06/2018 02:01

Boring
Tight
Thick.........
These are a few of my least favourite things

But how do you know if they're stingy or just couldn't afford the heating?

I am specifically talking about people who I know.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 06/06/2018 02:43

A guy asked me out on a date and then, after I accepted, suggested that we just get a couple of bottles of cider and sit in the park because it would be cheaper.

I hesitated to share this because I know that in some circumstances this might really be all that someone could afford, and an evening picnic in a park could even be quite romantic if presented in the right way. But just... no. Trust me, it was neither of the above and it was just extremely unappealing.

(I declined the invitation)

BradleyPooper · 06/06/2018 03:09

It's a big turn off but I can think of worse...
Bigotry
Sexism
Anger
Lack of character
Inability to communicate
No sense of humor
....

marjorie25 · 06/06/2018 03:21

Stingy - big turn off for me.
Stingy with money, the same with love.

CheeseGirl4 · 06/06/2018 04:04

It's not a positive trait for sure, but I think unkindness and selfishness are worse.

LapsedHumanist · 06/06/2018 04:06

Cruelty is most unattractive trait to me.

OlyRoller · 06/06/2018 04:09

Hypocrisy for sure.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 06/06/2018 04:16

A friend of mine dated a stingy guy for years. It was so depressing. We lived far apart (often different countries) so when we met it would be a big deal. Invariably, instead of going out we’d “get stuff from a deli and have a picnic”. Ok, fine in my home town. Then we met in Barcelona and it’s, “look how cheap this carton of Sangria is. Let’s just stay in our hostel room and drink”. Then when I wanted to show them around my new city it was, “oh but I already bought supermarket booze, let’s just stay in”.

If we ever did go out to a restaurant, he would finish everyone’s meals because it was such a big deal and a waste not to. Even worse, he’d start eyeing off my food part way through, stick his tongue out and pant like a dog begging. He. Was. So. Revolting. So no, I don’t like stinginess and would run a mile.

eightfacesofthemoon · 06/06/2018 04:28

The problem with stinginess is it shows up in everything
Not being able to afford something is totally different..
I think people who are stingy are also stingy with love. And I think they spend so much time analysing and working things out, that they can’t even enjoy their time. It sucks the joy out of Everything.

An example, “oh look at the sun setting over the sea, there’s a nice little pub there, let sit and have a drink and watch it go down”
“Oh I bought wine with vouchers from Tesco let’s drink it in the hotel room, it will be much cheaper”

Happygolucky009 · 06/06/2018 04:33

I am stingy but won't let it reflect on others ie. If in a coffee shop will have water or go without if I am with kids but if with friends will do cold drinks (last longer). Being frugal is one thing thing but manners come first

TheMythicalChicken · 06/06/2018 04:42

Happygolucky009, do you feel the cold?

FriendlyOcelot · 06/06/2018 04:47

Cruelty, lack of empathy and bigotry are worse imo. Negativity and lack of humour are also big no-no’s. Stinginess is very unattractive though.

Movablefeast · 06/06/2018 04:56

If you are on a tight budget you can still be very thoughtful and generous with lovely honemade cards or a special home cooked meal. Truly stingy people do not have a generous heart and just don't go out of their way. They have a grey and narrow outlook on life.

LanguidLobster · 06/06/2018 04:56

Oh before I clicked on this I thought you meant in a general sense.

In terms of relationships not protecting and supporting someone is paramount.

In general, not respecting someone's personal boundaries.

Fintress · 06/06/2018 05:07

Same thoughts as BradleyPooper and add arrogance to the list.

Bumpitybumper · 06/06/2018 05:16

I think extreme stinginess can almost be like a form of anxiety. I know someone who gets very stressed and anxious about spending anything other than the absolute minimum on anything. It is difficult to be around her sometimes as even buying a drink in a cafe can evoke an extreme reaction, but as I see it something that's almost beyond her control then I accept this trait and try not to judge her for it.

I think people that are stingy with themselves and other people are much easier to deal with than people who are just stingy with others. I think the latter is linked to unkindness and lacking generosity whereas the former may not be.

Skittlesandbeer · 06/06/2018 05:18

Stinginess is def in the top 5 deal-breakers for me, but it’s behind:

Bad personal hygiene
Laziness
Hair-trigger temper
Sulkiness

ShutUpBaz · 06/06/2018 06:20

Stinginess.

Unable to look after ones self (i.e. can't do washing, clean, tidy, cooking, finding anything etc).
Cannot abide a man-child who needs looking after. Ugh what a fanny drier!

Sulking.

LanguidLobster · 06/06/2018 06:22

Didn't Emma Thompson say her husband was so frugal he'd use teabags twice?

So I guess you could look at it in two ways Grin

Shoxfordian · 06/06/2018 06:31

Lack of generosity can be so much more than financial; someone who doesn't want to give you their time, their attention or spend any money at all. I don't like stinginess
