AIBU to be concerned about DS's feet, which have barely grown in 2 years?

He is 7, pretty small (height wise) for his age, but on the charts - but we are small - and DH was small until he was about 12, then went through growth spurt and is now a respectable height.

But DC's feet haven't grown much - and I mean incrementally - in about 2 years. No big jumps at all.

Should I be worried?

If it helps, my both my dc have slow growing feet. My ds(8) feet have grown a lot this year and he’s pretty average height. On the plus side it’s saved me a fortune on shoes from an early age..

Pinkkahori · 04/06/2018 21:12

What size does he take?-
My dds have very slow growing feet. They always wear out their shoes.

TheOriginalEmu · 04/06/2018 21:14

no, i wouldn't be worried. my kids all have relatively small feet for their ages/heights and have never done the massive leap thing. until this year at 13 ds has gone up 4 sizes.

Sparrowlegs248 · 04/06/2018 21:15

I was wondering this about my toddler. He's not quite 3 and been in the same size shoes for almost a year. Although his feet were bigger than average when he had his first shoes so may be they're levelling out.....

Portobellomushroom · 04/06/2018 21:17

He's got size 28 - I think that's an 11? I can only remember him being 27.5 about 18 months ago

I don't know what average height for a 7.5 year old is, but he's def on the small side of that. The girls tower over him

I don't think it matters. DD is a similar age to your son and is now in size 2 shoes but her first school shoes were a 12. DS is coming to the end of Y1 and is still in size 10 shoes. This is his fourth term in the same school shoes. It hasn't occurred to me to worry about it. I just enjoy how cheap it is compared to DD!

Portobellomushroom · 04/06/2018 21:24

Thanks, Squidge. I think i worry because he's also small in stature

My DD8 is the same her feet are barely growing she's an 11 1/2 however she is very small for her age, her sister was exactly the same though and has had a massive growth spurt over the last 18 months and at 13 she is now a size 5 and 5ft3!

x2boys · 04/06/2018 21:26

my 8 yr old hasent grown much at all in.the past couple of years or put on much weight , he has complex learning so under a paediatrician who referred him to a dietician they are keeping an eye on him and weighing and measuring him regularly but are not to concerned as hes in proportion hes just gone up a shoe size hes in 13.

Whatififall · 04/06/2018 21:26

My DD’s feet grow slowly. She’s 8 and only just gone into a size 11. She was a size 10 for all of Year 2 and up to Easter this year, so 18months same size.

Portobellomushroom · 04/06/2018 21:28

Thanks all, you're making me feel better

I wouldn't worry. I was size 13 at age 11. Now I'm a full grown person I'm a whopping size 4!!!!!

Zoflorabore · 04/06/2018 21:30

I honestly wouldn't worry too much.

The range of sizes in every class is likely to be huge.

My own ds is 15 and in year 10. He is a size 14 shoe, feet like canoes.
When he was 7 he was in an adult size 5.
My dd is now 7 and is in a size 1 so that's quite a difference to when he was the same age.

Some of dd's year 2 class are tiny, others are massive. Your ds will likely have a huge growth spurt and maybe skip a size or two.

Fruitcorner123 · 04/06/2018 21:32

Have you checked where his height falls on the percentile charts? Have you weighed him and checked that he is putting on weight. If it's only his shoes I wouldn't worry at all. If he doesn't seem to be growing as he should then see a GP but if its just his feet I am sure they will catch up.

PragmaticWench · 04/06/2018 21:35

I think feet sometimes grow at a different rate to height. DD is five and has grown lots in height this last year, but remained a size 11 in shoes all year. No idea why.

DS is three and a half and just gone into size 11, much to DD's disgust! He's huge though.

Haudyerwheesht · 04/06/2018 21:37

My kids are / we’re tall at age 7. Their feet didn’t grow between aged 5-8ish I seem to remember.

RoseanneBarred · 04/06/2018 21:39

DD age 10 is a 4!! DS1 age 16 is size 13... hope DD's don't get that big Grin

agnurse · 04/06/2018 21:41

For children, size of feet is not really based on height. As long as he is following his normal curve on the growth charts (emphasis on HIS normal curve - continuing in the same percentiles he's always been, regardless of where those are), he's active, and appears healthy, it may well not be a cause for concern. Do check with your provider if you have concerns.

For adults, on average, foot length is about 15% of height. This doesn't apply to children because their bodies are proportioned differently.

DiddimusStench · 04/06/2018 21:42

Nah. DD5s feet never grow. It’s great Grin

BlueTrousers · 04/06/2018 21:44

DS1 was the same size shoe from nursery to year 2! He’s now in year 4 and has gone up 2 sizes since nursery
He’s teeny though, the smallest in his class by about a foot (height) and him and my 2 year old DS can share shorts
I’m only a size 4 shoe and I’m not particularly tall (5:5)

Portobellomushroom · 04/06/2018 21:44

A quick scan of his wall chart tells me that he’s grown about 4cm in the last year but about 6 in the year before that. No idea if this is normal - he’s on about the 10th percentile, possibly between 10th and the next one up.

He is healthy, he’s active and he’s very gobby, so im not seeing any growth slowing in that area

Pinkball - was he always small? Do you expect him to grow?

OP posts:
Portobellomushroom · 04/06/2018 21:45

I mean grow tall...he’ll obviously grow

DS is almost 8 wears size 1
DS almost 6 wears size 13.

My dd wore size 8 shoes from starting in reception to part way through year 2 (more than 1 pair!)
