To ask what is your plan if the UK hits a period of civil unrest?

Another thread making me wonder really, but not a thread about that as there are so many potential fuckups that could leave things shaky for us mere commonfolk for a while. From a severe bout of bad weather, to a cyber attack on the grid, or a weird glitch like the Visa cards not working last week.

Not talking about a full on apocalypse! Rather emergency situations where everyone is freaking out, but that are hopefully temporary and can be resolved.

Some people are very prepared and have sensible plans. I am not one Grin but thought it'd be interesting to discuss. Prepping in general I find quite fascinating, but also it's sobering to see how quickly talk turns to defending your supplies (if you bother to stockpile) so I guess I always know I won't bother stockpiling. As a woman on my own in a city full of ravenous hangry people, I ain't gonna stand a chance if it comes to a fight Grin

What are your thoughts?

That it's ridiculous and there isn't going to be some kind of apocalyptic situation, just like there wasn't at New year in 2000 . The economy might take a hit but it's not going to turn into Shaun of the dead.

MrsCD67 · 04/06/2018 18:43

I didn't realise people had plans like that tbh

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 04/06/2018 18:44

I try to stockpile chocolate, but I'm not very good at it.

mummmy2017 · 04/06/2018 18:45

Try worrying about something that might really happen.. this won't

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 04/06/2018 18:46

tbh it doesn't really cross my mind.
I did start stockpiling a bit, but that was against me being too skint to get food....

scaryteacher · 04/06/2018 18:47

Sweden are now realising that a cashless society isn't such a bright idea, and I always have some cash about. I also am never knowingly understated, so have enough food to feed 4 people for a while. It might get repetitive, but it can be done.

I don't think we'll have civil unrest in the UK though.

Racecardriver · 04/06/2018 18:48

Civil unrest in the UK? You do realise that the country is full of British people right?.... Unless by civil unrest you mean people jumping que and not standing to the right on the escalator?

N0tLinked1n · 04/06/2018 18:48

I don't know if it's completely ridiculous.

During the snow it only took 3 days for the shops to run out of fresh food.

We are as dependent on The Delivery as Ireland used to be on the potato in the 1800s.

ThePants999 · 04/06/2018 18:49

That is all.

To ask what is your plan if the UK hits a period of civil unrest?
MrsMoastyToasty · 04/06/2018 18:50

Create a people's Republic of Wessex. Our flag will have a cheddar cheese on it; national drink will be cider and national dishes will be cream teas.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 04/06/2018 18:52

" We are as dependent on The Delivery as Ireland used to be on the potato in the 1800s."
that is a myth btw. Just saying.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 18:52

People totally ignoring my question by zoning in on Brexit outcomes. Whatever you do or don't believe about Brexit, there are other situations that could arise from weather/ cyber attacks/ whatever.

I'm not actively worrying about this, although that in itself is maybe a bit naive and silly - we feel so comfortable and insulated from any kind of disaster. We just don't seem to be able to compute the idea of the population coming to blows over the last scraps of food on the shelves. But if you look at something like Hurricane Katrina, people were (temporarily!) hungry and desperate and fighting among themselves.

I genuinely find it interesting, the plans sensible folks make.

Also, chocolate is a smart thing to stockpile as it's high calorie and will keep you going!

Lol. Same here. No point worrying about it.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 04/06/2018 18:54

I don't mean people starving was a myth!!

I mean there was plenty of food in Ireland and no need for so many people to be reliant on the potato.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 18:54

"Unless by civil unrest you mean people jumping que and not standing to the right on the escalator?"

Haha Grin I've seen British people get Very Annoyed Indeed when a foreigner commits the heinous crime of queue jumping! If they were really hungry and on a short fuse...who knows what might happen.

I have actively been stockpiling red wine, if there is civil unrest and I cannot leave my home I will be OK. Wine

BarbarianMum · 04/06/2018 18:54

Is it FourFried? Why did the famine happen then?

viques · 04/06/2018 18:54

I am planning on an all out attack on the corner shop, I reckon if I can get in there and get the shutters down I should be fine for a couple of months.

I have also signed up to Amazon prime for the free entertainment as I think Netflix will go to the wall fairly quickly.

My plan B is to scale the walls of Buckingham Palace and live in their grounds a la Bear Grylls, my reasoning is that security will be fairly lax as the Royal family will be spirited away to Balmoral at the first signs of trouble, and BP is huge, so if I am careful I won't be spotted. I have watched Hunger Games a few times so think I have got the basics of this survival thing. Ie sleep in a tree, don't annoy wasps.

BarbarianMum · 04/06/2018 18:55

X post

ImogenTubbs · 04/06/2018 18:55

Racecardriver - you do realise that Britain has seen many periods of civil unrest - there were actual riots in Clapham Junction a few years ago? Yes, the thing most likely to get hurt was a JD Sports store, but it wasn't exactly reserved and polite, was it?

On the one hand I think it's extremely unlikely that there will be an apocalypse anytime soon.

One the other, I think we have been very fortunate to live through a long period of peace and are a bit naive to not consider these things a possibility.

That said, I'm not a prepper and not fit enough to outrun a rampaging mob, so clearly it doesn't worry me enough to keep me awake at nights but I fully accept that it could happen. (By 'it' I mean any number of man-made or natural disasters that could be extremely difficult/fatal for a late number of people).

Helmetbymidnight · 04/06/2018 18:55

I’ll just come on mn and call brexitteers twats.

(Not much change there) Grin

mcqueencar · 04/06/2018 18:56

I don’t see civil unrest & don’t prep however I do believe we are going to be in for some tough economic times (not necessarily just due to Brexit) with the associated affects on the lack of resources for the police, nhs etc.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 18:57

Yes - I'm Irish and agree there was plenty of food in Ireland during the Great Hunger, exported to feed English bellies.

And that Queen Victoria gave more more money to Battersea Dogs Home than to 'famine relief' in Ireland Hmm

I think I major bug or hack into banking or travel would be distributive enough so always try keep some cash at home and food.

NewYearNewMe18 · 04/06/2018 18:57

chocolate is a smart thing to stockpile as it's high calorie and will keep you going!

It's a ridiculous thing to stock pile because it is a sugar boost that will give you a rush then plummet.

We didn't start eating each other during the Blitz, or when the UK was barricaded and virtually no supplies were getting through.
