Another thread making me wonder really, but not a thread about that as there are so many potential fuckups that could leave things shaky for us mere commonfolk for a while. From a severe bout of bad weather, to a cyber attack on the grid, or a weird glitch like the Visa cards not working last week.

Not talking about a full on apocalypse! Rather emergency situations where everyone is freaking out, but that are hopefully temporary and can be resolved.

Some people are very prepared and have sensible plans. I am not one Grin but thought it'd be interesting to discuss. Prepping in general I find quite fascinating, but also it's sobering to see how quickly talk turns to defending your supplies (if you bother to stockpile) so I guess I always know I won't bother stockpiling. As a woman on my own in a city full of ravenous hangry people, I ain't gonna stand a chance if it comes to a fight Grin

What are your thoughts?

Wow. People getting on with their neighbours. How dreadful! They must all be in a cult.

Wow. People joking and being lighthearted on Mumsnet. We must be snarky to them at once. Hmm

MadMags · 06/06/2018 14:15

Well, we only wear our orange hats and green cloaks on the Tuesdays that there is a full moon - that doesn't make us a cult, does it?

It depends. Is there any sort of human sacrifice?! Grin

My apologies @Wearelocal

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 14:33

No apologies required lostinsunshine! I'm teasing but finding this thread so enlightening. I've watched a million walking dead episodes but never actually thought of 'prepping'. I had no idea people had seriously thought this stuff through.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 14:34

I'm quite excited about eating all the tinned fruit favourites from childhood Wink

The zombie apocalypse stuff is just a bit of silly fun. I prep not for that kind of thing but for more realistic things like bad snow, the power going down etc. I live near Manchester and, sadly, terrorist attacks on the city are not a new thing for us. Obviously, I know the likely chances of being caught up in one are small but I always have a quiet plan when I go into the city, particularly for a gig with my daughter at the Arena. I was caught up in the IRA bomb at the Arndale centre so I suppose that sort of thing has been at the back of my mind.
The possibility of something going bump around Brexit is just another thing to think about. But not obsess over.
Prep, then get on and enjoy life.

I find Prepping is a sensible thing to do. It’s just a case of what if......

What if there was civil unrest, what would our plan be? What would we need to make that plan work?

What if the house caught fire, what if Brexit causes civil unrest.

99% if the time 15 mins talking with DH on a dog walk then 10 mins of “action” means we are covered for that event.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 06/06/2018 15:03

I have suppose if I had large house.. Like pils, huge garage I may have a freezer full of stuff but are we saying leccy could run out too?

I could stock pile pasta and source... (with large 🏡) but I think loo roll would be my main stock pile emergency actually. Hundreds of rolls of it because some I can't use... And I wouldn't fancy using new paper or rags .

lostinsunshine · 06/06/2018 15:33

Because of the risk of losing the leccy, I've started to do some dehydrating and canning (American for putting stuff in jars using either a pressure canner or a water bath - depends on acidity of the thing being canned). I also have some dried soya flakes etc.
Weirdly only the other day we were talking about how knackered we were going to be coming home from a jaunt. I suggested we use some of the chilli I had canned a while ago. Delicious. No leccy required in storing it.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 15:55

Kursk lostinsunshine I'm going to give it some thought. I grew up in Belfast and have taught the kids how to respond to a terrorist situation and basic self defence, so I guess that's not much different.

lostinsunshine · 06/06/2018 16:03

What works for you, @Wearelocal . Most online stuff is US in origin which can be pretty tough - usually gun oriented. Useful if you ignore US centric bits. Check out Prepper Potpourri on YouTube - all those gun toting US Prepper types defer to her and respect her. Alsobthe Prepper topic on here. Do not freak yourself out. Think about what's likely to throw a spanner in your daily routine- usually weather related, tbh.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 16:59

Lostinsunshine. I'm focussing on food. I get hangry really quickly Grin I am already weather ready because of my location.

lostinsunshine · 06/06/2018 17:01

Get in stuff you'd eat. Or preserve stuff you'd eat. Or both.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 17:12

Got it lostinsunshine. Big shop planned. I just hope I don't eat it accidentally. Also I have a dog, so need to stock up for him. The kids were a bit surprised when I told them the dog might eat us if he was desperate Grin
