Another thread making me wonder really, but not a thread about that as there are so many potential fuckups that could leave things shaky for us mere commonfolk for a while. From a severe bout of bad weather, to a cyber attack on the grid, or a weird glitch like the Visa cards not working last week.

Not talking about a full on apocalypse! Rather emergency situations where everyone is freaking out, but that are hopefully temporary and can be resolved.

Some people are very prepared and have sensible plans. I am not one Grin but thought it'd be interesting to discuss. Prepping in general I find quite fascinating, but also it's sobering to see how quickly talk turns to defending your supplies (if you bother to stockpile) so I guess I always know I won't bother stockpiling. As a woman on my own in a city full of ravenous hangry people, I ain't gonna stand a chance if it comes to a fight Grin

What are your thoughts?

I'll make nettle soup and thank my lucky stars that I'm lax with gardening. Later in the year I'll have a bumper crop of blackberries too.

chickenpox100 · 04/06/2018 19:17

We are as dependent on The Delivery as Ireland used to be on the potato in the 1800s.

How is this a myth?

viques · 04/06/2018 19:18

wearelocal Long life milk!!!!! Surely things can't get THAT bad.

Shudders at the thought.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 19:18

Have to admit - I also find it fascinating how I can state quite clearly I'm not remotely interested in prepping for an apocalyptic scenario just something that could reasonably happen. That could be overcome in a matter of days or weeks, with civil society going back to normal. Like very harsh weather. Or a massive technical issue in banking. Or somesuch.

Yet the most patronising of people saying are jumping and reacting as if I've asked what y'all are doing to prepare for incoming zombie invasion. When that has nothing to do with the original post...

Well I have an actual underground bunker in my garden - ok it doesn’t have power or water and it’s currently full of paint pots but y’know I feel prepped already.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 04/06/2018 19:20

" How is this a myth? "

as I said, there was plenty of food in Ireland, and no reason for so many people to be reliant on the potato. I am sure MadMags will put it way more eloquently than I can...:)

MadMags · 04/06/2018 19:21

Again: it’s a myth because the famine was genocide.

Not more eloquent! ;) but definitely true!

TerfsUp · 04/06/2018 19:21

I do wonder if targeting the banking and finance system will be the next thing in terrorism.

It can't because terrorism, by definition, involves violence or the threat of violence.

Notevilstepmother · 04/06/2018 19:22

In the event of zombie apocalypse, head to Costco. They don’t have Costco cards so they can’t get in, and there is a lot of food and booze there.

Kursk · 04/06/2018 19:22

OP, Preppers are always viewed as a little bit nuts, and the butt of jokes.

I think people don’t want to plan, because it scares them to think about it. Plus they trust the government would never put them in that position.

BarbarianMum · 04/06/2018 19:23

But they couldn't afford the food, so it being there was no help to them. So if Brexit causes shortages and a huge hike in prices there may be food available - but only for those that can afford it. What do the rest do, hope there's a huge surge in food bank giving?

CatchIt · 04/06/2018 19:23

You only need to remember the Great Snow Fall of 2018 to see how it would go down.

Our local coop was out of pretty much everything within about 12 hours. We were woefully unprepared and had to have a friend drop off nappies as we live on a hill, without a 4x4, in the countryside.

Dh did walk to a nearby village that's less populated than our closer one to stock up on milk, eggs and chocolate.

MobMoll · 04/06/2018 19:23

I lived through Hurricane Sandy. No joke. Wall st was flooded and our infrastructure was damaged for my months. As a result, I always have cash on hand. Without power cash point machines don’t work. Always have a case of bottled water on hand, we drink bottled water any how so it’s not going to waste. I make sure we always have lots of nappies, batteries and canned foods. I also have made a typed sheet of all my contact phone numbers and email addresses since during Sandy our cellphones didn’t work. I have a son on medication so I always fill his prescriptions as soon as I can and hold onto his old medications when his dosage changes. I have a printed copy of our home and car insurance policies. All of this helped my family get through the after math of the hurricane

Flooffloof · 04/06/2018 19:24

Well having only just given this any thought at all,
I will either
Pack car with absolute essentials and as much food as I can fit in it and drive to the furthest remotest point, take over a house or castle or light house that I can defend easily. Stay as long as possible.
Or
Kill all my elderly neighbours off and steal all their supplies, hunker down in the old Anderson shelter that one neighbour still has. Most of my neighbours are elderly so I think I will be ok overpowering them. A couple of neighbours ain't so elderly, not sure I could overpower them.

This is only for walking dead style problem.
If its just visa fucking up then I will sail through a couple of days unrest.

Notevilstepmother · 04/06/2018 19:24

Destruction or disruption of infrastructure is part of terrorism.

Kursk · 04/06/2018 19:24

Government aid. AKA army ration packs.....or starve

Chinnyreckoning · 04/06/2018 19:25

I'd get my bow and arrows out... I'm a fecking amazing shot and either hunt or pick off people who have soles supplies stored 😁

Spudlet · 04/06/2018 19:25

I have started thinking about prepping for Brexit... not so much for the zombie apocalypse scenario, but in terms of stocking up on things that might go up in price, making sure the heating oil tank and wood store are both topped up, and having a good think about how to make the most of the vegetable patch. We did get snowed in this winter and ran out of milk due to excessive hot chocolate consumption - wouldn't want that to happen again.

If there was civil unrest we're far enough away from any big towns or cities to be safe, and our house and cars are small and uninviting for any hordes of zombies or looters so I reckon we'd be ok as long as it didn't go on for too long.

TerfsUp · 04/06/2018 19:25

No, it isn't.

TerfsUp · 04/06/2018 19:26

Clarification: that was in response to Destruction or disruption of infrastructure is part of terrorism.

Notevilstepmother · 04/06/2018 19:27

For example as a teenager I remember multiple incidents of bombs that disrupted transport links without injuries.

Notevilstepmother · 04/06/2018 19:27

We will have to agree to disagree.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 19:28

My girlfriend lived through Sandy as well, and only didn't go to her office in the WTC on 9/11 because her child was unwell and she stayed at home. Her colleagues were all okay, but still - bloody unnerving and devastating.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 19:29

I make my own wine. In case of civil unrest, I'll get drunk.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/06/2018 19:29

@Flooffloof I'm glad you won't kill the neighbours if there's another Visa error, would be a bit extreme Grin
