Another thread making me wonder really, but not a thread about that as there are so many potential fuckups that could leave things shaky for us mere commonfolk for a while. From a severe bout of bad weather, to a cyber attack on the grid, or a weird glitch like the Visa cards not working last week.

Not talking about a full on apocalypse! Rather emergency situations where everyone is freaking out, but that are hopefully temporary and can be resolved.

Some people are very prepared and have sensible plans. I am not one Grin but thought it'd be interesting to discuss. Prepping in general I find quite fascinating, but also it's sobering to see how quickly talk turns to defending your supplies (if you bother to stockpile) so I guess I always know I won't bother stockpiling. As a woman on my own in a city full of ravenous hangry people, I ain't gonna stand a chance if it comes to a fight Grin

What are your thoughts?

If I can derail...
I'm amazed by the number of friends and work colleagues who are simply turning a blind eye to BREXIT

We've just (literally) paid off everything and currently now saving as much as possible before the shitstorm begins next March.

If nothing happens then we will enjoy 2019 more than we're enjoying 2018.

Personally I think with the looming trade wars and Brexit....the water is gonna get choppy and I don't wish to get sucked under.

crunchymint · 05/06/2018 23:12

True - the best real preparation is probably to pay off any debts you have and try and save if possible.

MimpiDreams · 05/06/2018 23:21

I reckon I could survive for 6 months, possibly more, without ever leaving my house. I'm not a prepper though. I'm just utter disorganised with a massive 6 room basement full of everything but the kitchen sink. I forget I've bought something so buy more, but then can't fit it in the cupboard, so it goes into the basement for later, but then I forget and buy it again.

And nyponsoppa is bloody disgusting. But I think I may have a few cartons in the basement too.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 08:14

Crunchymint why save? If the economy dives, savings will be screwed. Isn't it better to be in debt?

FluctuatNecMergitur · 06/06/2018 08:36

Actually the best thing to do is all work together to build a better more equal society so civil unrest and climate change don't happen in the first place. #oldlefty

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 10:47

Lovely idea Fluctuat but my neighbours all voted for Brexit, so they can f*ck off. They're not sharing my tinned mandarin pieces.

lostinsunshine · 06/06/2018 10:57

@FluctuatNecMergitur , you've got a long wait for us all to fall back in love with each other and help each other out. The Brexit vote was about saying "Fuck you" to whoever you disliked because any kind of compromise to get the positives of EU membership was unpatriotic.
My neighbours all voted for this shit. If it turns out great, I will be the first to admit I was wrong. If it turns out shit, I too am not sharing my tin of mandarin halves with anyone but my immediate family.
If there is kicking off, I would keep out of it.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 11:16

Exactly lostinsunshine. It was meant to be divisive and it worked! I checked and they're mandarin segments, apparently. This thread has made me crazy - I'm going shopping for tinned goods later Grin

lostinsunshine · 06/06/2018 11:23

@Wearelocal . I'm a prepper. I hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I genuinely hope this Brexit bollocks works but I have preps for any problems it brings as works for us. Same with snowstorms/unemployment/whatever bad shit.
I voted Remain for NI peace process and for stability generally. For my daughter's FOM rights and for my sibling's business that operates in an EU country. Where they have changed their laws to insist on EU citizens as company owners. Luckily, we all have Irish citizenship through a parent.

Well our street is friendly, although there are some toerags living near enough who might realise we are doing ok and try to disrupt us.

But between us, we have at least 4 BBQs (2 on gas, 1 on charcoal/wood, 4th is a mini charcoal, and I suspect there are another few around as well) and some camping gas stoves etc as well.

2 of us have water butts off the gutters already.

Plenty of decent handyman/DIY skills (electrician, woodturning as a hobby, lots of different types of DIY jobs done successfully between all the men and some of the ladies!). Plenty of us not afraid to climb trees or ladders if need be (again - not necessarily the mens folk!).

Pretty skilled cooks, and well stocked larders and alcohol stores. As we include Greek background (who's parent, still living with them, went through bad times there), French, and grew up in Ireland in the 80s' backgrounds so used to frugality. 1 shed is a "man's shed" which is mainly devoted to beer (and a few tools). Couple of 2nd freezers in sheds. Couple of gardens growing veggies.

The only downfall is that, being summer (and after the end of winter was so bad!), we are all low on logs for the woodburning stoves and open fireplaces (and 1 open BBQ). But there are saws in sheds, and trees on the green that we can chop down.

Also, loads of bicycles to move people around, and to get to any shops that are open - and we tend to do things like shared grocery runs when bad weather etc hits (and then use the results to have shared BBQs on the green in the snow, with hot wine!). And a couple of people have cards for the cash and carry, so we'd do a massive group run first, and divvy out the proceeds of that to last us a few weeks.

And to avoid dealing with external factors, we would all (and not just 2) take out 1 fence panel between back gardens, and not need to go out the front door at all......

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 11:43

Biddybop you all sound terrifying Grin

MadMags · 06/06/2018 11:47

@BiddyPop your street sounds like something from a creepy horror movie! 😂

You can move in any time you like, but you can never leave...

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 11:57

We didn't burn him....

MonumentVal · 06/06/2018 12:05

I was in the middle of the 2011 London riots according to the news, but apart from the one arson attack in Croydon it was just a normal weekend given a fancy name. I'm on an urban residential street with a family of martial arts experts next door and probably have better security than most local houses, so staying put is likely the best option.

If we get to zombie aocolypse levels of doom, then probably still staying put - if desperate humans try to get our stuff, invite them in, offer some food, then kill them. Followed by butchery and trading meat...

BiddyPop · 06/06/2018 12:14

Grin People do move out occasionally - but we've had a stable group for the past 12 years (and there have been tears recently as 1 family announced they will move next year...) We genuinely all get on with our day to day busy lives, and don't live in each other's pockets, but we do have a reasonable amount of fun together both informally and formally, and can rely on each other for lots as well! It's a great neighbourhood (and the main reason why DH and I haven't seriously looked at a bigger house or more seriously a bigger garden even when things improved again).

But if push comes to shove, we're the kind of group who would all work together and make things work out for the good of us all.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 12:15

The martial arts NDN will kill you first.

lostinsunshine · 06/06/2018 12:16

Wow. People getting on with their neighbours. How dreadful! They must all be in a cult.
Hmm

Blinkingblimey · 06/06/2018 12:24

There was arson in other areas of sw London too Monument....

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 12:33

Ha ha biddybop you still sound terrifying, but my money's on you guys to survive the apocalypse Smile

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 12:34

Lostinsunshine just joshing.

BiddyPop · 06/06/2018 13:11

Well, we only wear our orange hats and green cloaks on the Tuesdays that there is a full moon - that doesn't make us a cult, does it?! Xmas Grin
