To ask you how often your children have a bath/shower?

I ask because my DDs age 11 and 9 have just come back from a week at their DF's and have only had ONE bath, no showers. My eldest has hit puberty so gets sweaty and spotty now and her hair gets very smelly too so has a shower every other day at home or daily if it's been very warm like the past weeks. The younger one isn't as keen but will still have a shower every other day. They do it themselves and I just dry their hair as they prefer me to do it.
My stbexh doesn't see a problem but this is a man who used to get his dirty nurses uniform out of the clothes hamper and iron it to wear again Envy(not envy).
I'm not a clean freak but they are doing swimming lessons, judo, horse riding, swimming in rivers, climbing trees and generally getting grubby like children should so I think they should have the opportunity to have showers more often than once a week. AIBU?

Twice a year Binary? What a shocking waste of water! Shock

Popsicle434544 · 04/06/2018 13:54

My teens shower every day, my 9yo and 3yo every other day

Tomboytown · 04/06/2018 13:57

Ds 10- once or twice a week.
He doesn't smell
It's a battle I don't care about right now.
He had a bath last night and washed his hair with conditioner!

PinguForPresident · 04/06/2018 13:59

Mine shower/bath every night. The elder one (9) would skip the odd night if she could, but she does sport or dance every day so I insist on it, even though puberty hasn't hit just yet.

reallyanotherone · 04/06/2018 13:59

Once a week is not adequate in my book. I know people used to shower and bath less but they probably also smelled!

That’s just assumption. From my memory of once a week baths and no showers very few people smelled. There was occasionally that one kid in class who had a problem, but generally not.

I had a housemate at uni who did not have body odour. We ran an experiment once and i think they got to 3 weeks still not smelling! And no that wasn’t just “nose blindness”, we did it properly in physiology class.

My dog hasn’t had a shower in 6 months. He doesn’t smell. Although when we used human shampoo on him he really stunk after 3 days- we were having to bath him 3/4 times a week. Switched to dog shampoo and all is fine.

Maybe the showering everday think is a conspiracy plot by shampoo and soap manufacturers- the more you wash the more you smell. I am going to try the dog shampoo on dh...

Somtamthai · 04/06/2018 14:04

Every day for dd7. She runs around all day. She also does get sweaty. We live in Asia, so it is very hot.

WaitrosePigeon · 04/06/2018 14:04

5 & 7 bath every day. Thought that was normal.

mirime · 04/06/2018 14:13

@Tomboytown

It's a battle I don't care about right now.

This really!

@WaitrosePigeon

5 & 7 bath every day. Thought that was normal.

So did I. I always had a bath every day, but I liked baths. DS generally doesn't (he's had the occasional moment) and the one time we made him, you'd have thought murder was happening and it was horrible for everyone involved.

PiffyGumtree · 04/06/2018 14:14

Ds is 18 months, gets bathed every evening. Partly for routine, partly because he's a magnet for muck, partly because he's always been a sweaty wee beast 😂 He's basically made from snot, mud and leftover breakfast.

OneStepSideways · 04/06/2018 14:15

Every other day. Daily in hot weather or after playing in sand/mud/nursery. Clean clothes daily. Sometimes she doesn't want a bath/shower so I give her a good wash with wet soapy flannels.

I think parents always think their child doesn't smell but I remember children being smelly at school, nobody wanted to sit next to them or play with them. Sort of musty/old wee smell rather than BO.

Once they're at puberty I think a daily shower is a good habit to get into.

CheeseAndBeans · 04/06/2018 14:17

Every other night for my DDs, 1 and 4. More if they have suncream or get especially dirty.

EveMoneypenny · 04/06/2018 14:24

Nearly 4 year old has 2-3 baths/showers per week. More often lately during the nice weather as he's been outside getting sweaty and with suncream on - I always bath him after a day like that.
Baby only 1-2 times per week. He's got some dry skin on his cheeks but the skin elsewhere is lovely and soft, and I think not bathing him very much helps.

MrsPreston11 · 04/06/2018 14:29

Every day. But as they're young then hair can only be once/twice a week as long as they don't get food/dirt in it. I'm sure they'll end up like me though and have to wash it everv other day once puberty hits.

Occasionally (late night etc) they'll just have a wash before bed to save time.

Have a (hippy) freidn who's kids only bath when/if they want to. Stiiiinky kids.

HairyToity · 04/06/2018 14:31

5 year old and 1 year old every third night.

Mari50 · 04/06/2018 14:33

Dd(9) has a bath/shower twice a week at the most. She doesn’t smell- we’ve both been actively checking this; me-to encourage her to shower more often; her-as a defence for her sloppy personal hygiene.
She knows that daily showers are in the post though and that the moment puberty starts to rear its stinky head her slackness will no longer be tolerated.

VauxhallVectra · 04/06/2018 14:33

Until she was about 12, I used to bath my DD every night and she'd have a good wash down every morning. Obviously I didn't actually physically bath her until she was 12 but she had a bath every night.

Then she turned 13 and she started showering in the mornings and taking very long, very luxurious baths every night (I'm talking candles and incense and everything).

Over the past year or so (she's now 17), she's had two or three showers a day depending what she's doing.

MrsKoala · 04/06/2018 14:35

5 & 3 year old hate baths and showers and getting wet in general so i only manage to force one bath a week when i have an extra pair of hands to help me. But that's miserable and traumatic for everyone involved. I get a warm flannel over them every other day with much wailing.

1 year old loves baths so she has one 1-2 times a day.

LiteraryDevil1 · 04/06/2018 14:37

Obviously some people aren't on a water meter!!

Geekmama · 04/06/2018 14:40

My DS age 7 has a shower or bath every day.

DearTeddyRobinson · 04/06/2018 14:41

Every day, they're 2 and 5.
I always wonder when I read these threads, if the 'once a week' brigade are the ones who come on in 5 years time moaning that they can't get their stinky teens in the shower.
Surely a daily wash is a good habit to get into from a young age?

Onlyoldontheoutside · 04/06/2018 14:45

They are typically soap Dodgers at this age.Send them to a PGL and they come back with soap and flannel untouched.
In another year or so your daughter will split her time between the bathroom and her bedroom!

SadieHH · 04/06/2018 14:51

6yo has 3 or 4 baths a week. 10yo is just starting to get a bit stinky so she showers most days.

Oysterbabe · 04/06/2018 14:53

Every day for my 2 year old, it's just part of her routine and she does get quite grubby. I throw the baby in with her a couple of times a week.

Horses4 · 04/06/2018 14:54

Every second day. More often if necessary (youngest has a chronic inability to sit still at meals and ends up with food in her thick, curly hair), which is a delight to detangle...

donajimena · 04/06/2018 14:56

I insist my teens shower every morning before school but during half term I'm lucky if they do it once in 7 days. I let it go unless we are going to be in company.
