AIBU?

To think 2pm on a Sunday is an anti-social time to barbeque?

One of my sets of neighbours are an obnoxious couple in the early throes of retirement. They have children my age and grandchildren who are toddlers. This time of the year until October now they will be barbequeing almost daily and twice daily on a weekend with the kids and grandkids noisily "enjoying" The garden.

We work full time. The only time we can feasibly peg out washing is the weekends but with this good weather every weekend from 1pm 2pmish their barbeque is fired up and doesn't go off until dinner.

I freely admit I don't like them as it is but this just tips the balance. Do tell me I'm being unreasonable...ill just ignore you keep seething while they stink my washing out.

Honestly.. move to the country if you don't want to bother with neighbours.

I'd like to know what the "early throes of retirement" are

I put my washing out at 7am and it was dry by lunchtime. Try that.
Of course YABU, they are doing a very normal activity at a reasonable time.
Don’t worry OP, I can see new rules on bbqs coming in shortly, along with restrictions on wood burning stoves and bonfires.

I feel your pain. My neighbours used to fire up the barbecue at 11.30 am every day for most of the year. It stank. I had young children and plenty of washing. Did they care? Did they fuck!
Fortunately they've stopped doing it now.

Why would people wait until the evening when it's colder and kids will need to go to bed soon instead of barbecuing at lunchtime if they can? You're definitely being unreasonable, are you saying you wouldn't bbq for lunch with your family on a fine day? Hang your clothes out in the morning or on Saturday, there are lots of weekend hours other than Sunday 2-6. Can you not do it on weekday evenings too and bring it in before work the next day?

What do they do that’s obnoxious?

They're the neighbours NO ONE wants. Loud, messy, music blaring, cars parked all over the place, a dog who seems to live in the garden and never shuts up, try and talk nicely with them and get sworn at... delightful specimens.

During the day on weekends? That's the very opposite of antisocial!

This can’t be real! You have a job so can’t hang washing out in the week?

And you can only hang it out around 2pm on a weekend?

Give over!

Early throes of retirement- not elderly but due to the volume they speak at I know he gave up work last year and she has reduced her hours to almost not working.

This is either a joke, or a reverse. Otherwise you've lost your marbles, OP.

Op, are you just a little bit jealous then?
Poor you having to work full time and your neighbours being in the throes of early retirement

If my neighbours had moved, @Bump, I'd think they were yours! Yy to the loud music, drunken screeching and loud talking and a yappy little dog to top it off.
Perhaps there's a factory producing them somewhere? 😂

Come on, you must surely know that you’re being massively unreasonable!

We bbq every 3rd weekend or so if weather is nice. Sometimes I leave a few bits drying on the line while we do it. It doesn’t end up smelling of smoke, andwe don’t have a massive garden.

You sound like a right whinger. Your neighbours sound nice and sociable and using their outdoor space to have a good time.

Yesterday someone in one of the gardens backing onto mine had a party with shrieking and cheering going on for over 7 hours. Was a bit annoying but I assumed it was for a special occasion, possibly a hen night, so was happy it went well for them.

They do sound obnoxious from your other comments, but you seem to have picked on the one aspect of their behaviour which I'd perfectly reasonable for your AIBU... so YABU!

OP I think you probably ought to either move house or get one of those super Mumsnet reviewed heated indoor airers.

In have dinner kar neighbours, noisy feral family, constantly in the garden with their music on, park incorrectly therefore put their bin out in the space we are meant to use. However, Yabu about them bbqing and we both work 49 hours each a week and I hang out another ad if eashing each morning then take it in when I get home. What stops you doing that?

My MIL hates bbq's and when living in a house used to complain a great deal about neighbours having one, so you aren't the only person who feels like this. However it is a perfectly normal thing to do and a perfectly reasonable time to do it.

I too hate the smell of bloody barbecues. I put my washing out before I go to work, or early on weekends so that by midday it’s dry. When i win the lottery, the first thing I will do is buy a house that’s at least one mile from the nearest neighbour, althyim happy to admit I’m an anti social misery Grin
