There is HUGE societal and cultural pressure on women to shave. It's easy for someone who shaves to say they're doing it not because they feel that they have to, but because they like it better like that. You might like it better, but did you ever go full on hairy in order to make that decision? Did you live for a couple of years with no shaving and then decide, "no, this isn't for me, I think I'll shave like 90% [random number but probably there or thereabouts, but happy to be contradicted], not because there is any cultural pressure, but because it's my choice and I have never felt the pressure of our culture, or all the ads for hair removal, or you know, been stared at for daring to go out with hairy legs?
There is huge pressure. Why are men doing it now too? It's called consumer capitalism. Don't worry, I'm not going to go full on Marxist with anyone, but in order for capital to grow, new brands and new markets need to be made. "Hey, let's tell men shaving is great for them too and that women don't like all their hair!". This isn't yet a full on cultural change. Beards are a definite indicator that men still like their hair and older men are not going to shave their chests and ball sacs, because they're not the target market. Maybe one day it will be a full on cultural change. Women didn't all suddenly start shaving, but they were eventually shamed into it.
That's the other difference. Men who are told that shaving is cool are told it is cool and hot. Women who are culturally expected to shave, were and are shamed into it. Hair is nasty unless it's on your head, type stuff.
I give in to all manner of cultural pressures. I wish I didn't, but I know I do and I don't pretend that it's me making my own choice, because none of us lives in a vacuum and whether you chose to conform or rebel, you are doing so from within the culture you inhabit. There's nothing wrong with conforming per se, but it is wrong to pretend that any of us are free from the societal norms and pressures that are all around us.
