Did you have a fancy proposal?

I didn't. We decided to get engaged together and I even chose the ring. When I tell people they're very surprised, and say they hope their other half takes them on a fancy holiday before popping the question.

Am I alone in getting engaged like this? I don't know if I've missed out on the excitement of a surprised proposal. But surely in a long term relationship you know it's coming? And will have spoken about it at least? The proposer will need to know the other wants to get married surely?

Oh, and Happy Anniversary Gunty Flowers, and here's to many many moreWine

Nope - he'd had the day off to finally pick up the keys to our house which had been stuck in probate for months. I'd been sitting an exam all afternoon on Health & Safety and was not in the world's best mood as I thought I'd failed.

We walked into the lounge. I said something along the lines of "it's so much dirtier than when we last saw it. There's not enough bleach in the world to get this clean" Turned around and he was on one knee.

Followed by a small wedding as I fell pg a month later.

Nearly 5 years on, and still happy.

Talked about it and how we wanted to marry each other for a few months.

We Came home from the pub one night and he got down on one knee and asked me. Gave me a lovely speech about us, our future and things and I picked the ring the next morning while we were lying in bed.

It wasn't fancy, but I didn't care. It was sweet and I loved it. He proposed at home on a significant date, it took me by surprise.

@OP not really no! We were both at home in our PJ's with the dog. It was over the festive period and DH had hidden the ring in our advent calendar. He then asked while still sitting on the sofa 😂 afterwards he drank about half a glass of prosecco and then fell asleep while I started planning!

That said we had discussed getting married but thought it was a bit further in the future, there was no rush so I was totally taken by surprise as he had told me he was happy to get married but not really that bothered about it....turns out he'd been fibbing to throw me off the scent.

We knew we wanted to get married from our first date and talked about it on date 3. So we had pretty much discussed it to death! We waited a year though so that our families wouldn't think we were mad!

We chose the stone together but my DH designed a unique setting for it, so that was a surprise and I absolutely couldn't love it more. Then he got the jewellers to say in front of me that it would take 10 weeks but then secretly picked it up two weeks later. He proposed in my favourite place (too outing to say where) - it was simple but absolutely perfect.

No, arrived back at the station after visiting my parents and my boyfriend said:
“Well we might as well then!” We then went to TGI Friday’s for dinner.

Zintox · 02/06/2018 14:17

Not really. We were in Paris, to be fair, but he spent the weekend telling me he wasn't going to propose to me (ok then) so when one evening he suddenly grabbed my hand and said"will you marry me?" I told him I thought he was joking and to ask again in the morning if he meant it!

Not quite the proposal I'd dreamed of but it's a long time ago now.

icebearforpresident · 02/06/2018 14:47

DH proposed to me at about 1am while we were lying in bed drinking a cup of tea. It was perfect and to be honest sums our relationship up pretty well: easy, fuss free and wearing pyjamas!

Had he done the big, elaborate, down on one knee proposal I would have laughed myself silly,it’s so not our style.

We chose my ring together about 2 weeks later.
