Do you love, or hate your house?

I've hated every house I've lived in apart from my current house which I love.

It's set back away from the street via a drive, and then another private drive to access the house so we're nowhere near any proper roads. To the side of us is green land. It's detached so no neighbours to fall out with.

Inside it's all corridors and rooms, no open plan nonsense so it's easy to hide away from people. I love it. I can't imagine a better house and I've never felt so settled.

It's 4 bedroomed and the kids are slowly starting to leave - soon we'll only have one here and they're 17 so might fly the nest soon also.

Would I be unreasonable to stay here forever even though it's much surplus to requirements?

Do you love or hate your house and why?

I strongly like my home. There are a couple of tweaks I would really like to make. It would be cheaper to move to do that and we could now afford it, but it just isn’t responsible financially. Staying in a house that meets our needs and keeps our housing costs low is just too good to let go.

Escolar · 07/12/2018 19:19

Love my house. Especially the kitchen which was new a few months ago!

prettypossums · 07/12/2018 19:23

I just love my house. Even when I've been away on an amazing holiday, I'm always so happy when I return home to it.

I like our house but I don’t love it.

It has plenty of positives and a fair few negatives. It was DHs when I met him so I never had a part in choosing it etc.

We’re in the process of moving and our new house is another “like” rather than love. But hopefully we can create a home we love with it.

VictoriaBun · 07/12/2018 19:26

My parents house ( and my childhood home ) had been hers for 52 years. She was only 51 when my Dad died and remained in it until she died at nearly 80. When the house was sold I walked through it for one last time saying farewell to the walls, my childhood bedroom. The memories of laughter and past Christmases and the garden. That 3 bed semi will always be in my heart.

EncroachingLoaf · 07/12/2018 20:02

Some PP's houses sound bloody amazing. Mine's a total mess and needs loads of work that we can't afford to do right now. It's also quite an unappealing pebble dash semi. But we've made it homely and cosy on a budget that will do for now until we can afford the work.

I love it because it's the first place I've ever owned. I feel so safe and secure here, as do my kids. The sense of relief when we got the keys and first came in was overwhelming after years and years of renting when we didn't want to be. I just burst into (happy!) tears as I walked in and felt so so lucky. Blush

Monkeynuts18 · 07/12/2018 20:08

Bit of both.

I love the actual house. It’s got an open plan kitchen diner and the living room with lovely bay window. It’s got curb appeal.

I like the fact we’re within easy reach of the town centre and the countryside.

I hate the fact that we didn’t realise how busy the road it’s on is until we bought it. It looks like quiet little one lane road but actually in the morning and evening it’s packed.

Some of the neighbours are lovely but quite a few are tenants who are pretty scummy - leaving piles of rubbish outside their houses etc.

I hate the town with an absolute passion. It’s a Home Counties hole.

PhilomenaSnowflakeButterfly · 07/12/2018 20:14

Our house is very nice. I like it, I can't say I love it.

Hippopotas · 07/12/2018 20:18

Hate my house.
Next to main road
Terraced with odd neighbours
Garden too big
Rats or vermin in the attic
Tiny bathroom with no storage space
Driveway breaking up

We have bought a house off plan 4 bed detached, smaller garden and I can’t wait.

Monkeynuts18 · 07/12/2018 20:19

One thing I should have added is that neither DH or I got the feels when we viewed this house. We just offered because it was nice enough and there was nothing nicer on the market - and we’d already missed out on one that really was perfect.

When we move again, I’m definitely not going for anywhere where I don’t get the fit feeling.

Monkeynuts18 · 07/12/2018 20:19

*gut feeling

SleepySofa · 07/12/2018 20:31

Love ours. It’s a four bed detached with a drive, an orangery and a library. All separate rooms, which I love, but they’re large enough to use for entertaining.

Parttimewasteoftime · 07/12/2018 20:40

Love mine it's small and shabby but gorgeous area fab school and lovely neighbours. It's like living in a village but we don't DH would like to move told him he can without me 😂

LaurieFairyCake · 07/12/2018 20:40

12 foot ceilings, open fire, 1700 square foot just into zone 3.

Best place I've ever lived.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 07/12/2018 20:42

I love our 3 bed Victorian terrace. I just wish we had off-street parking as it's one of "those" roads.

Wonderful neighbours, no one's planning to move.

Sorry topcat2014, I do have the bay window for the tree...

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 07/12/2018 20:46

It's funny, when we were looking for a house, we were pretty desperate (we were renting and when knobhead landlord found out that we were looking to buy, he basically gave us notice so he could get his friends in there.) Saw our current house and I was a bit meh about it, but it ticked all our boxes and we offered slightly over asking price for the vendors to take it off the market straightaway.

We moved in, redecorated, did a bit of work to it and now I absolutely love it. It has a lovely atmosphere. It's on a really quite cul de sac, neighbours are lovely. I can't see us moving again. So all's well that ends well.

For some reason, I thought this was going to be about your Hogwarts house.

I am an adult, honest Shock

(and I'm a very happy Ravenclaw with no strong feelings about the walls which surround me!)

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/12/2018 20:58

I love our house. Both DC have lived here all their lives and that makes me incredibly happy - I grew up in care and had many, many homes over my first ten years. Giving them that stability and consistency is a lovely feeling.

I love the feeling when I pull onto our drive that it's ours. It's where my roots are and it still makes my heart skip when I realise that it belongs to me. When we came to look at it I said immediately to DH I wanted to live here and I've never regretted it.

Noviceoftheweek · 07/12/2018 20:59

DDIJ I truly hope things get better for you

roundtable · 07/12/2018 21:09

I love mine. Terraced and open plan downstairs which will fill most of the above thread with horror.

I grew up in a big house - I was very scared staying there by myself. DH travels a lot. I don't feel scared in ths house.

I sometimes think maybe we should buy bigger but I think we'd (I'd) regret it.

DENMAN03 · 07/12/2018 21:19

I love my house. I moved here 7 years ago when splitting up from my husband so I had to downsize and bought a Victorian wreck. I always saw the potential in it however and it was in a great location. I hated it for the first year but now, I have completely renovated the entire house, had a large kitchen/diner extension built and landscaped the garden. It's got loads of character and the street is full of lovely neighbours who all get on very well.. we even have street curry nights! Couldn't want for more.

choccybuttonshelpeverything · 07/12/2018 22:22

I love my house. We designed it and did a self build. I don't love it's location. It's in a lovely part of town but I'd prefer rural.

BlackberryandNettle · 07/12/2018 22:49

I like it and it's ideal for our needs at the moment. I wouldn't say love with a passion, it needs doing up (we have plans) and is pretty a standard house rather than anything special, but nothing about it is bad.
