I've hated every house I've lived in apart from my current house which I love.

It's set back away from the street via a drive, and then another private drive to access the house so we're nowhere near any proper roads. To the side of us is green land. It's detached so no neighbours to fall out with.

Inside it's all corridors and rooms, no open plan nonsense so it's easy to hide away from people. I love it. I can't imagine a better house and I've never felt so settled.

It's 4 bedroomed and the kids are slowly starting to leave - soon we'll only have one here and they're 17 so might fly the nest soon also.

Would I be unreasonable to stay here forever even though it's much surplus to requirements?

Do you love or hate your house and why?

Love my house. Will love it even more once the never ending extension is finished!

formerbabe · 26/05/2018 12:02

Hmmmm..

I love the location, the size, the number of rooms.

I dislike the decor and it needs things doing to it.

I try to count my blessings.

Zebra31 · 26/05/2018 12:02

Love our home. No where better in our opinion.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 26/05/2018 12:06

I like my house, I don’t love it.

It pros are a big kitchen, off street parking for two cars (three at a push) which is like gold dust in an area of mostly terraced houses, handy location with lots of useful local shops and a short walk into town, fairly quite despite being just off a major A road.

The cons are, it’s small other than the kitchen, we only have two bedroom, odd layout, the garden is on a slope so you can’t use the lawn for anything, the road is very narrow which causes access issues, not much in the way of local green spaces.

Haisuli · 26/05/2018 12:09

More dislike than like at the moment. There are loads of things that need doing and it makes me feel panciky. Dont like the small north facing garden. and we have a busy body neighbour who i would love to not be anywhere near. I don't think we could ever sell it thugh. One of the issues seems.fairly serious and difficult to fix.

crispinquent · 26/05/2018 12:12

Our last house was full of chestnut trim that was so dark it was almost funereal. Our current house has white trim which is so much brighter and warmer feeling

MerryDeath · 26/05/2018 12:15

i adore my house. it's just perfect for us. sadly it's rented and they are too bloody greedy won't sell it to us which is just so sad Sad

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 26/05/2018 12:16

Love our house, good size rooms for DC & we have top floor so a nice big bedroom where I love to hide. We have in fact just extended downstairs avoid moving.

AnnabelleLecter · 26/05/2018 12:22

I love my house; loads of space, all the rooms we need, beautiful garden, huge driveway, fab location near dog walks and nice pub.
I've dabbled with the decor until it's exactly what I want.

Annabelle4 · 26/05/2018 12:24

I like and dislike things about it.

I like that it's detached, has a large garden, large kitchen, 4 bedrooms, we have an ensuite. I like the tiles and floors downstairs.
I recently painted the kitchen from a horrible bold colour to a soft neutral, which has made such a difference to how I feel about it.

I don't like most of the furniture - most of which is cheap coffee tables/wardrobes/beds etc we bought 10 years ago but can't afford to change. The sitting room couch is black faux leather and really wouldn't be my choice - but it's practical for kids.
Upstairs carpets need to be changed, they're stained and poor quality.
It's a large house, which some people would love, but it's impossible to keep clean, organised, expensive to maintain and very expensive to heat.
The sitting room looks dated now (according to MN anyway, has a feature wall where the wood burner stove is). It's also quite a dark room.
I don't like our front door (bit random)!

I would prefer white interior doors and skirting boards, as I think they're brighter and cleaner looking. Ours are dark.

Overall, happy and feel very blessed.

soveryfeckless · 26/05/2018 12:27

@Seafour would you mind sharing the name of the company which installed your lift?

Freyanna · 26/05/2018 12:29

Op - Your house sounds lovely!

Do stay where you are!

We have 4 bedrooms too, great for grandchildren and guests.

One bedroom is partner's study.

Kursk · 26/05/2018 12:29

Love it, it’s a hole we could only dream of having in the UK. 3 bed 1700sqft with massive rooms a big deck and barn. We have a 2.5 acre garden.

The area is so quiet it’s amazing.

honeylulu · 26/05/2018 12:30

I love our house. The day we went to view it i had such a strong feeling that i had always been meant to live there. It's a Victorian terrace with original features in the middle of town and very short distances from both schools and the station (i commute). The bedrooms and bathroom are massive for a 3 bed terrace. Also a sizeable cellar for wine, big freezer and other storage.
It wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea - it's a busy, noisy area on the main road, no off road parking and a very small garden, but i still love it.

Sadly we are looking to move because we now have a teen and one bathroom is getting to be a real struggle. We also have no spare room and we dream of having a proper study as we both wfh one day each.

We have a great budget but I'm managing to find fault with every house we see. In over a year I've only really fallen for one other house (which was just like ours but bigger!) and we lost out in a three way sealed bid!

Hedgehog80 · 26/05/2018 12:31

I love our house
4 bed council property near a main road. The kitchen is quite big and looks out onto the garden so I can sit and have a coffee and watch the dc if they are out there
Front room is only small but it’s cosy and at xmas looks lovely as we have a fireplace
There’s a mouse we can’t seem to get rid of but for now he’s a novelty as is impossibly cute
There are piles of clutter everywhere but I view them now as treasure piles. Every so often I sort one out and invariably find some old photos, drawings or things the kids have written and it’s lovely and often funny.
Bedrooms a good size again are a bit cluttered but it’s nice to see the toys are played with. Dd1 room is like a show home room which is amazing.
Bathroom is teeny tiny not helped by the fact we put a huge bath in 😂 but I love it and could spend hours in there
Feel very lucky

HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/05/2018 12:34

LOVE IT! Mostly because it's mine, not rented, not abroad and doesn't have ExH in it.

ChishandFips33 · 26/05/2018 12:37

I love my house too. It's full of character at every turn and there's always something to keep me busy

I have a garden now too which adds to the delight

Enjoy your house OP, may you have many more years in it!

SensoryOverlord · 26/05/2018 12:41

Hate it.

Loved it for years but it's a 2 bed and we've quickly outgrown it since the arrival of ds3. He's still in our room and we're like sardines in a can...nowhere near enough storage here for 5 people.

Just about to put it on the market and trade up though. Hopefully be having Christmas in a nice big 4 bed somewhere 🤞🏻

Iletthedogsout · 26/05/2018 12:41

I don’t mind the house itself, it’s a bit shabby and we can’t afford to do anything with it, but I’m not really bothered with how it looks, and the garden is quite nice.

Unfortunately, like another PP, I loathe the area and town it’s in, and dream of the day I finally move away. If and when that does happen, my neighbours won’t see me again for dust!

viccat · 26/05/2018 12:43

A bit of both... It was the best I could afford and has a nice feel about it, always did, even with the previous owners' ugly decor that's now gone. The neighbours are quiet and one of them in particular very nice. I'd rather be in a slightly different area, or at least a different part of the same area, though.

It has some annoying aspects to it - the kitchen is very small, the garden is small and half of it always in shade, there is still work to do that I'll probably never get around to like replastering the dining room ceiling and sorting out proper paving for the front garden, and I'd like to have more space in general... I regularly dream of moving further away to get a bigger house.

Echobelly · 26/05/2018 12:43

Our current house, the 'forever' home, was not our first choice, but we didn't see any others that were the right size.

Downsides:

  • A bit narrow
  • Hallways are dark (but will be improved when we repaint the dark woodwork - we know it looks much brighter when you do that from our neighbours' houses)
  • Tiny garden (but we were never going to afford a large one around here)
  • Difficult to park outside
  • Near high street end of the road, view front front is a bit unglamorous (back of shops) and people sometimes flytip

Upsides:

  • Really nice road that's very friendly for London
  • 5 minutes from tube - it's so good to have minimum effort when you get to the station
  • Big (4 beds, 3 of which are doubles), 3 receptions originally
  • We were able to change the layout in a way we really like
  • We can extend into the loft one day

Overall we like more than we dislike about it, I'd say.

Sunnysidegold · 26/05/2018 12:43

I love my house. Our old one was tiny and in a rough enough area. We never thought we would be able to afford to move but circumstances changed in our favour.

It's in the country but within 10 miles of a town. We have a gorgeous big garden which we are slowly getting to grips with.

The house still feels very much like the previous owners' in that we said we would like in it a while before decorating.now I feel trapped in magnolia. I'm slowly getting to put my stamp on it but I don't trust my own taste in anything.

It is our forever home as it has spare rooms and a bathroom downstairs so we can live downstairs when we are too creaky to make it upstairs.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 26/05/2018 12:50

Love ours. It's not our dream home, it's a new build with a tiny kitchen which I hate. However, we worked very hard to get it, it's in a desirable catchment/area and it has lots of storage and space (just not in the kitchen). Won't stay here forever though, it's very much a home and area for people with kids, so once it's just DH and I we'll definitely downsize.

SodTheGreenfly · 26/05/2018 12:53

Love it. Just moving back in after building work and renovation. The best bit is the boot room!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 26/05/2018 13:02

Love it. We've been here two years and I still pinch myself. Very grateful to be here. It's our first house we've bought and we plan to stay here.
