Do you love, or hate your house?

I've hated every house I've lived in apart from my current house which I love.

It's set back away from the street via a drive, and then another private drive to access the house so we're nowhere near any proper roads. To the side of us is green land. It's detached so no neighbours to fall out with.

Inside it's all corridors and rooms, no open plan nonsense so it's easy to hide away from people. I love it. I can't imagine a better house and I've never felt so settled.

It's 4 bedroomed and the kids are slowly starting to leave - soon we'll only have one here and they're 17 so might fly the nest soon also.

Would I be unreasonable to stay here forever even though it's much surplus to requirements?

Do you love or hate your house and why?

We downsized from a house I loved and didn’t like the smaller space, so upsized again.

I love it. Convenient for shops, public transport, facilities. Near to countryside, close to a seaside town.

MrsLaurac · 26/05/2018 14:48

Hate it. The room dimensions are all wrong and it just never seems to stop tidy. It's a large 4 bedroom house and plenty of space but it just can't be pretty, never thought I'd say this but if i was to end up moving again I want a clean lined new build that is easy to be made pretty and nice

DottyDotts · 26/05/2018 14:51

haba given the user name it's definitely Wales. Goggled Cymru if I'm not mistaken Smile

popcornpaws · 26/05/2018 15:06

I love my house now its been renovated and is exactly to our specifications, i used to be a bit meh about it before, however the size of the rooms and the airyness of it has always pleased m.
What i do love is the view, rolling hills, farms and a burn, beautiful!!

KanielOutis · 26/05/2018 15:16

I don't love my house. It was the only place I could afford to buy. A flat on the main road. No outside space. But it's mine. I've lived here ten years and am on the home stretch to paying off the mortgage. We are slowly doing it up and making the most of it. I think we have spent almost as much on renovations as buying the place.

Murane · 26/05/2018 15:18

My house is ok. The kitchen is lovely but the garden is far too small, and the neighbours park like twats and block my drive. I liked it a lot more before the planning inspectorate approved a housing development on the green field we overlook (against the wishes of local residents and the parish and county councils).

haba · 26/05/2018 15:23

Dottydotts - well my instinct told me Welsh hills!

Bluntness100 · 26/05/2018 15:35

Yes, i love it and feel lucky. It's a listed building and the garden is three acres, and it's very pretty iif I'm honest. Even delivery men comment. 🤣

However it's impractical so when we retire and get a bit too old to manage it, we will probably sell up and move to something more practical.

Ive never hated any house I've lived in, but this is the only one I've loved.

Awrite · 26/05/2018 15:47

Love it.

There's loads to dislike as it's fugly 70's with thin, thin walls but - oh my the view. I can see the sea and that soothes my soul.

PickAChew · 26/05/2018 15:50

I'm still in love with my house half a year after moving in but it still needs a lot of tlc and I swear at it under my breath, frequently.

Parentingissotough · 26/05/2018 16:14

@awrite I feel exactly the same about the sea. I want to live by it but we’re settled in a lovely part of the world and guess we’ll stay here now until we retire, which honestly makes me feel a little bit sad. Enjoy it.

spontaneousgiventime · 26/05/2018 16:21

I'm with you there PickAChew. While I adore my house and the location, like you I recently moved in and as it's an older house and quirky it needs a bit of work. An elderly lady owned it before me and so it does need updating. I've made a good start but I need a new kitchen but can't decide what I want. I'm also debating a conservatory, it would be a nice to have not a need to have (in terms of space) but I don't know how much I would use it. I need ceilings straightened as they curve, it's part of the quirkiness of the house but straightening them would be nice. Then I think should I obliterate quirky just to make nice lol. Aghhh.

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 26/05/2018 16:30

I don't particularly like my house, we downsized when the children left home, stayed in the same area, would like to move on but my husband is very happy here, so I have to grin and bear it.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 26/05/2018 16:44

Our house is alright I suppose. I neither love it nor hate it.

It has a large back garden, decent sized rooms, it's cheap enough to heat and it's in a not too bad area.

It's pebble-dashed and therefore ugly, it doesn't have anywhere near enough plug sockets, it's in dire need of redecorating and it doesn't belong to us (housing association house).

Also totally with you. The sea is my medicine

Where I live now is sublime in so many ways. Garden of England, surrounded by insane natural beauty but also SO convenient ... 3 min walk to outstanding school, 2 mins to high street wonderful selection of independent shops and cafes, ten min walk to M&S, banks, post office etc
Plus my home is, well, perfect (to me) in every single way.

But the sea. Oh, the sea. One day

Corkscrewbetty · 26/05/2018 16:55

Mine looks just like a dolls' house. I thought it was a great doer-upper... but I can't cope with it. I have good furniture, a shitload or nice stuff... but 15 boxey little rooms and four storeys. I'll never finish it and I'm surrounded by bumpkin fucks. Nice views... but a village full of insanos. Absolute insanos.

Mmmmdanone · 26/05/2018 17:17

I like it but don't love it. I hated it when we first moved in though so I can deal with just like!

Mooneyes · 26/05/2018 17:26

I adore my house. It was empty for years before we moved in, and we never thought we'd be able to buy. I was just heart sick of renting. Our house is tiddly, but the garden is big, the DC have a bedroom each and we're happy here. I honestly feel that this little house is just so happy and grateful to be lived in again, that even though it is small with a crazy layout, it's working hard to be the best it can for us bonkers

JemmimaJ · 26/05/2018 17:33

I love waking up and my view is the sea. It is such a little old cottage though And always needs repairing.

Accountant222 · 26/05/2018 17:40

I moved here 4 weeks since and I absolutely love it, I'm leaving this one is a box.

Hated the last one, nice inside but outside was horrible, huge garden, sold with full planning permission to build 4 detached, it's been knocked down now and I'm not sorry.

BBTHREE76 · 26/05/2018 17:44

I hate it currently but I plan to try to love it again. First house we’ve owned and a couple of years from mortgage being paid off. We decorated and major modernisation etc pre kids and loved our home then.... nothing! High child care costs meant whilst we have done a bit of painting we haven’t done any big jobs for a long time and it really shows. The whole house looks tired, and shabby and old. We need a driveway, new roof, walls skimmed and a 101 other things. We now have extremely noisy neighbours too and Hubby wants to move but I want to stay and decorate and do the outstanding jobs (which I feel we would need to do to move anyway) and then have a couple of years of actually loving my home again before making any decisions

SusanneLinder · 26/05/2018 17:52

I hate the outside of my house. Its truly fugly, and I would move if I could. But its a 4 bed exLA house and I would need to double my mortgage to get a better house, and prob smaller rooms.
It would prob help if we decluttered and redecorated. In process just now but I need new windows and kitchen, which we should have by end of year. Think if that was done, I'd like it better.
On plus side, its a decent area and 5 mins from countryside and plenty open space.

opinionatedfreak · 26/05/2018 18:09

I like my flat. The new kitchen has made a huge difference and completing my enormous decluttering exercise will make a massive difference.

I'm hoping I will love it once that is done.

vintagesewingmachine · 26/05/2018 18:24

I used to hate our house. DH was a widower when I met him and I moved into his family home as he was really keen (quite understandably) not to uproot his teenage children who'd already been through enough and had never known any other home. It is nothing to look at from the road but it has beautiful sea views at the front and open fields at the back. It was like a 1980's time-warp when I came here and was just so dark and dingy inside but some new carpets, new furniture and a lick of paint did wonders for the place. We have also since extended it so I have the family kitchen I always wanted. I am still hoping that DH and I will buy something, one day, that we have chosen together, but for now, we are very happy and very fortunate to live here.

totorosumbrella · 26/05/2018 18:33

I thought I loved it when we bought it but I'm never satisfied!

It's a 5 bed Victorian semi - love the period features but hate the kitchen/family room bit which is where we spend most of our time. I think if we had nice furniture and replaced the kitchen floor it would be better but we can't afford it at the moment. Essentially if I had a free hand and unlimited money it would be wonderful! And it's too big for us really and takes ages to clean (so it's never all clean!)

It's on a lovely residential street, walking distance to town and station. I really want to be in the proper countryside with sheep and birds but unfortunately commuting and nursery practicalities prevent this. So we're here for about the next twenty years I guess.
