Homeisthecalm here, I think it's suitable to start a new ethics thread.

Since clearly, the one from yesterday isn't really about ethics but Clemmie.

Thanks all,

Keep it as nice or as stingy as you like Grin

I'll start off by saying things should be clearly marked 'ad' or 'gifted'

Although the term gifted gives me the rage

I love her a little bit Smile

Boredandtired · 07/06/2018 21:24

Moonkissedlegs · 07/06/2018 21:27

The Meldruma stories are actually making me feel a bit depressed!

Moonkissedlegs · 07/06/2018 21:27

Meldrums

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 07/06/2018 21:40

Thanks local. Will have a look at them.

The M family are hitting new lows this week. I haven't watched their holiday vlogs from this week, just seen their Instagram (although I don't really watch many parenting YouTube vlogs anyway, because, well 😑🔫). I can't bear their blatant virus spreading though. Making me angry for their fellow holiday makers. Hope there aren't any too many young babies or elderly people about.

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 22:11

The thread is nearly full. Head over to the 'To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram Influencers' when it's done?

bawbles · 07/06/2018 22:27

Can’t see the new thread wearelocal?

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 22:33

It's not new bawbles. It was started while this one was running.

KatFarmer · 08/06/2018 00:12

Just wanted to clarify as I appreciate it can be confusing.. if we (the royal we 😘) are paid for a trip or if it’s clear that the trip is in lieu of payment and could be purchased as an experience, then I will personally #ad. As the ASA states.

However when it is a trip that can’t be replicated or purchased by a consumer then the rules for tagging are sketchier. (To my personal understanding..v happy to be corrected!)

I will always hashtag #gift or presstrip so that it’s clear I haven’t paid for them if I haven’t and they are a press trip and I’m not being paid to write about them.... and it’s not an experience you could actually purchase (ie a press trip.. )

I genuinely do try and be as transparent as I can, hence the different use of hashtags where relevant. Clear as mud?! 😝

ConfidentialWaste · 08/06/2018 07:19

Hi Kat, I think your transparency is overall top notch and I understood you didn't pay for the second cruise, which is the main thing. I suppose for me, different hashtags just overcomplicates something which should be fairly simple for the consumer/follower.

Although I probably couldn't have bought a ticket for that particular trip, its just a ride on a very big boat which sells tickets to Joe Public (just not on that occasion) at the end of the day. You were invited because of your following and although not paid to write about it, you clearly did feel under some pressure (whether that is just the pressure of having to create content constantly or whatever) to post pictures of it on your grid. The brand got what they wanted out of it, coverage, so whether its tagged as a press trip or a gift, in substance it was still an advert.

As I said, I was clear about whether the trip was paid for or comped, but hopefully you can see why followers do find the use of different hashtags confusing.

Boredandtired · 08/06/2018 07:30

I'm afraid I have to unfollow anyone who uses #presstrip because it's just too wanky. Can't believe how much Instagram has changed and how it's all about freebies and selling things, including your own kids, the only person who I feel is in anyway genuine any more is Motherpukka who seems to want to engage.

Boredandtired · 08/06/2018 07:30

(And not come across as entitled)

ScipioAfricanus · 08/06/2018 08:17

As far as I am concerned, something free which you feel the need to share is an advert. All the #spon, #presstrip, #gifted is following the letter of the law rather than the spirit of it and comes across as trying to still be less than open about obligations. Essentially I agree with Confidential.

I was annoyed the other day that an instagrammer who is very good at labelling had a series of stories about some headphones and it wasn’t until the last one that she labellled it an ad/paid partnership etc. I wondered if, with some of the initial fuss of the ad labelling dying down, her transparency was slipping and it had been more gaming the audience than a genuine desire for honesty.
