Ethics regarding Instamums and huns

BurberryIsSo2000 · 24/05/2018 17:14

Homeisthecalm here, I think it's suitable to start a new ethics thread.

Since clearly, the one from yesterday isn't really about ethics but Clemmie.

Thanks all,

Keep it as nice or as stingy as you like Grin

I'll start off by saying things should be clearly marked 'ad' or 'gifted'

Although the term gifted gives me the rage

WeareLocal you are so right that sometimes we must speak out.You are very wise,my thread friend. The influencers could learn from you. I keep hoping they will throw some politics in with the potty’s. Not in the potty’s he he Grin I have bought some of Anne Tyler’s back catalogue on your recommendation. I shall commence with it as soon as I have finished “ This Will Be My Undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female, and Feminist in (White) America”.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 23:55

lol Laminlodge I nicked it from laurahesketh, who reposted from 1thatgotawayy. Worth having a look. You'll find Anne Tyler a bit tame after your current read Smile but I think she's quietly very wise.

Wearelocal · 06/06/2018 23:58

Laminlodge Candice Brathwaite did a bit of politics yesterday, followed by a pampers ad Smile

LaminLodge · 07/06/2018 00:18

Ah Candice Braithwaite Hmm I am not, shall we say, a fan. But this is her moment and she is making the most of it so good on her Smile

There's an interesting feature on BBC news today about YouTube stars boosting beauty sales, with reference to Instagram, ASA guidelines.

Make-up: Have YouTube stars boosted beauty sales? www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43966384

LaminLodge · 07/06/2018 09:19

Thank you TireSwing I will watch that. I cannot understand YouTube and why these people have their own channels.Even Janice on reception has her own YouTube channel. Not beauty though bless her,no one would watch her for that.

Hey, I have been a lurker for quite a while; whilst having a committed relationship to the Gram. I have become so so disillusioned with the Instamums and the covert advertising. Once, I followed them all; I have recently unfollowed all prolific advertisers. I used to relly enjoy the @motherfreckle account. Over the last month or so, she has packed in her full-time to become an IG influencer. She prefaced this with an appeal to her followers to understand that when she does an #ad, she is just a mum trying to earn money to feed her children. She also features her children heavily in advertising. I just feel that she has lost any integrity and she has advertised several products which has not (and would not have) used. Eg. Birds Eye chicken. Her daughter is anaphylactic (dairy). @motherfreckle made it clear that she will not touch any foods with 'may contain egg' for this reason. The #ad for BE carries 'may contain egg' on its nutritional info. I rest my case. She has also advertised nursing bras which she suggested she had used for 5 years, but in fact had only just come across the brand. I have unfollowed the ODs, SV and remain following one single instamum whom is MP. MP has posted a rather good message re #ad over the last day.

m5slowdown · 07/06/2018 09:34

I have my suspicion that @mother_freckle is here on Mumsnet - if you look on her youtube channel she has engaged in MN advertising with Lidl. Cady Heron / Sophia Lemon - any takers?????

stilldazed · 07/06/2018 10:31

meanwhile the meldrum's 6 month old baby 'loves' kids club.

and they are busy filming a sick child, no doubt fulfill their part of the contract they have with neilson holidays

Surely this industry needs to be regulated!!!

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 11:09

Mother Pukka is 👌🏻. Great post about #ad and moderating comments. And she has a sense of humour. If only she did interiors Grin

stilldazed · 07/06/2018 11:22

I have just read the Mother Pukka post and I agree its a good one.

For me there are 2 issues here, firstly, yes advertising, when it is not made clear that it is an ad but secondly...and more importantly using non consenting children to make money through internet advertising. ethically/legally and also from a safety point of view this has to be addressed!

poppytosh · 07/06/2018 12:32

I am assuming the meldrum latest holiday isn't an ad as it's not tagged as such and so many of their friends are there...However I would imagine any further work is in jeopardy after them showing Mr m ill yesterday and today is at the buffet and the pool quite the thing. Puts me right off. Plus the Greek resort looks identical to the Italian one so they could be anywhere.

stilldazed · 07/06/2018 13:20

poppytosh..they've had 3 holidays there in the last 2 months and their videos are heavily promoting neilson.....You are assuming its not an ad ?? Hmm

jamoncrumpets · 07/06/2018 13:23

Are they posting pictures of their sick kids? That's an absolute bugbear of mine. Why would you shove a camera under the nose of a sick child and post it publicly for thousands of people to see? I can't think of a single reason for doing that.

poppytosh · 07/06/2018 13:32

Stilldazed i don't think it is an ad purely because of the large volumes of friends that they are with. I think they said 17 in total? That's not to say they haven't had some kind of deal/partnership/sponsorship or some other perks which would be good if it was acknowledged. What I do think is that they are desperate to set up some kind of working relationship with neilson hence all the tagging etc but I think it will spectacularly backfire if they are passing round a stomach bug without proper isolation.

stilldazed · 07/06/2018 13:41

you don't think that the reason they took their child out of school was because that was when neilson offered them a freebee, because in the school holidays they are full with paying guests??

Otherwise why take a child out of school 3 times in 2 months...so dispruptive

nipersvest · 07/06/2018 13:46

I don't follow the Meldrums, checked out their feed after it was mentioned on here and also looked at the You Tube vlog, not quite sure what to make of it, bit errrrrr, boring. I'm not their target market though, my kids are older (high school/GCSE age).

ScipioAfricanus · 07/06/2018 13:59

If an instamum/influencer is honest with their ads then they won’t be questioned or criticised repeatedly about their holidays or possessions. All you need is a clear policy inline with ASA guidelines, a la Mother Pukka. The Meldrums have expressed ambivalence about tagging so their holidays are going to called into question. Easy to avoid with a change of policy.

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 14:00

I assume meldrums not tagged #ad cos it's a freebie. Didn't DMBL did this recently. Did paid #ad with cruise co. Then went on another and explained it was a freebie in stories, not a paid partnership. I'm sure ASA are watching. I thought a pp was going to report it? I've blocked them anyway cos they keep rolling up on my feed after having had a peek. Them and their horrid resort are my worst nightmare.

ScipioAfricanus · 07/06/2018 14:03

I think that, if it is the case, is sneaky and dishonest behaviour: a free holiday is essentially being paid. Just semantics to argue otherwise.

ConfidentialWaste · 07/06/2018 14:14

DMBL stated upfront how she was going to treat her villa holiday so there was no ambiguity. She said they had been given the villa for free but paid for everything else themselves so she disclosed all the posts showing the holiday as #ad (but didn't use the PP geotag) because that's what they are - ads for the villa company. It was very clear. Perfect. That's all it takes, it's not rocket science.
I see her mate, luludumas, got a knuckle rap in the last batch of ASA rulings. Not sure what it was for, could have been any number of posts. She gets a LOT of freebies and her disclosure wasn't great.

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 14:17

Confidentialwaste I wasn't referring to the villa hol. I was talking about her previous cruise hols.

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 14:18

....13th May. Not tagged #ad.

mrtumblesmum · 07/06/2018 14:21

Don't know if it's the same on Instagram but over on you tube every product does the rounds. So today St tropez self tan seems to be doing the rounds. A while ago everyone was shoving some f'in method cleaning product in my face. Then over on Instagram a while back everyone was eating Dorset cereal (apparently), struggling with their mental health battle (cue apps, books, you name it recommendations...) then there was bubble babysitting service. They're so dumb they even try and flog it to one another. It's like umm...you have to sell it to us unsuspecting public you dumbo not your fellow instagrammer grabby mate you div.

ConfidentialWaste · 07/06/2018 14:22

I think she disclosed the cruise as gifts instead. I would prefer to see AD because that's what it was, even if it was dressed up as a "press trip". I skimmed over those posts on the second cruise, one cruise was enough for me. I didn't see the point in the second one from a marketing perspective, though I am sure she had a nice time.
