To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

They aren't thin. They look thin because most people are used to seeing overweight people these days. Fat is the new normal Grin

RedPony1 · 24/05/2018 08:58

Your opinion that they are 'too thin' comes from the average person being larger than they should be

Echo this a 1000 times

ethelfleda · 24/05/2018 09:01

They are not extremely thin.

All women have different body shapes, hope that helps.

Also agree with this:

but I really wish that slimness and health was being offered as aspirational for girls, rather than thinness

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 09:06

Contrary to the prevailing opinion of Mumsnet, not being at or near the bottom of the healthy weight range for your height does not make you a lardy arse.

TwittleBee · 24/05/2018 09:07

they aren't good role models for girls, of course they're too thin

They are amazing role models - not because of how they look but because of all the amazing charity work and campaigns that they do.

(Also they aren't "too thin" they just aren't the average size of a UK woman which is actually overweight and unhealthy)

StormcloakNord · 24/05/2018 09:08

I don't usually comment on these threads as I'm very anti-royals, however, say what you like about being "too thin" and whatnot but I would far rather be their size than the current fat fucking mess I am right now.

Yeah, maybe they do look too thin but I'd rather be too thin than too fat (which I am) and I imagine a lot of you would be the same.

Bluntness100 · 24/05/2018 09:13

They clearly aren't too thin. Why would you think that? They will be within a healthy bmi.

dimots · 24/05/2018 09:17

Kate must be within healthy weight limits as the has conceived and carried 3 pregnancies. A woman needs a body fat percentage of about 18% to do so. Elite athletes sometimes go as low as 10%.

She looks slim, but not unhealthy

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 24/05/2018 09:18

Categoric - What would prefer the bridal shop specialising in plus sizes to say to a size 18 bride undoubtedly excited about her upcoming wedding? I don’t think that’s normalising obesity, it’s good customer service.

midnightmisssuki · 24/05/2018 09:20

This is a mean thread. They are not too thin. They look healthy. If this was a thread saying they were too fat you would’ve been ripped to pieces - skinny shaming is not ok OP. Shame on you.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 09:25

I see no shaming. If it is acceptable to express concern about people looking unhealthily fat it is equally acceptable to express concern about people looking unhealthily thin.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 24/05/2018 09:36

“ThisIsTheFirstStep

This. Yes, anorexia is a problem, but it is obesity that is causing the most health problems in the UK these days.”

I think this is just wrong and don’t understand why so many seem to believe it. I am very well aware of what underweight/ normal weight/ overweight/ obese looks like and I can’t think of anyone I know who isn’t capable of making that distinction. Just because such a large number of people are over weight it doesn’t mean they can’t recognise it?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 24/05/2018 09:38

Bluntness I don’t understand why you think you know about their BMI?

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 24/05/2018 09:40

I am very well aware of what underweight/ normal weight/ overweight/ obese looks like and I can’t think of anyone I know who isn’t capable of making that distinction

I am a size 6-8. I eat healthily, certainly don't starve myself and actually, I probably eat too much sugar/chocolate and crisps, and I exercise 3 times a week. I am totally healthy and have a normal BMI/no health problems.

I get told CONSTANTLY that I am underweight. People are always saying 'you're SO SKINNY' or 'EAT A SANDWICH' or 'YOU MUST BE STARVING'.

So no, people do not know what a healthy weight is. Being a size 16 is now seen as totally normal and average, but most people at that size will be overweight.

Bluntness100 · 24/05/2018 09:42

Well clearly because they simply look slim not thin.

Peoples views are so skewed. I do wonder if there is an element of envy.

bizzers · 24/05/2018 09:42

They're a normal weight, though. Confused

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 24/05/2018 09:42

bluntness I'd say it's something like envy and WANTING fat to be normal because people don't want to face up to the fact that they themselves are fat.

reallyanotherone · 24/05/2018 09:43

Contrary to the prevailing opinion of Mumsnet, not being at or near the bottom of the healthy weight range for your height does not make you a lardy arse

This.

I hate those "what do you weigh if you're x height" threads. As they are ineveitably filled with 5'8 women saying how 9 st might be ok for you, o/p, if you're 5'5, but I'd feel really wobbly and need to lose a stone head tilt.

People seem to forget that as with everything, normal is a spectrum. One woman may look fine at 8st, another may look way too thin. I need to eat around 700 cals a day to maintain 8.5 st, which is not healthy- even though 8.5 st is in the healthy weight range for my 5'4 height. someone else my height or taller may maintain it easily.

Hollywood and public figures may be self selecting in a way. Like gymnast or basketball players- gymnastics doesn't make you short, but physics means short people will be better at it, so the tall people quit. You are less likely to a) reach the public eye and b) stay in it if you are not thin.

I have read though that the average celeb BMI is about 15. And we've all read what the likes of Liz Hurley and posh spice eat to stay their shape. Meghan and Kate are likely naturally thin, but control their weight to the lower end of healthy for them. Which is fine on an individual level. On a population level though, us "normal" people are constantly seeing these naturally thin celebs who are able to stay at a low weight through lifestyle. I do know for me, as a teenager, it gave me a very skewed idea of body shape.

twinklefeather · 24/05/2018 09:44

I don’t think they are too thin. They both look a healthy weight.

TwittleBee · 24/05/2018 09:51

ThisIsTheFirstStep overweight is normal though in the UK. The majority of people are now overweight or obese. So perhaps that is where the confusion comes in when people are a healthy weight.

Mousefunky · 24/05/2018 09:51

I honestly think it’s just their natural body types, especially Kate who has quite a ‘boyish’ athletic figure. Maybe the Royal men just like slim women, who knows/cares.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 24/05/2018 09:51

Ok, well look back at Nicole Richie at the height of the size zero craze of 2007. Too thin? Naturally thin?

Thisisthefirststep - that sounds like you’re surrounded by very rude and rather stupid people. That’s pretty bad luck.

Alternatively my DSIL gets told she’s too think occasionally, by semi strangers. She’s 5ft 11 and 8.5 stone. She always has been. She’s not anorexic or a food restrictor (as far as we all know) but she is extremely thin and that puts her at underweight. It’s not that people think anyone under a size 12 is underweight because they are used to seeing obese people, is it?

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 24/05/2018 09:51

twittle yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 24/05/2018 09:53

sprinkles

Come on, that's just silly. I don't think you have to try to act like this is some weird phenomenon that only happens to me. Ask any relatively slim person and they'll tell you they get the same shit all the time.

I barely remember what Nicole Ritchie looks like so can't answer that.

TwittleBee · 24/05/2018 09:53

I think there is some madness currently going on. Whilst it is great that people should be comfortable in their own skin it is becoming silly when a Cancer Research campaign that stated obesity is leading cause for cancer was dubbed as "fat shaming" or when women are only "real women" when they are overweight.
