To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

They are just very disciplined about the food they eat because they know the amount of scrutiny they come under from the press. Diana suffered from bulimia due to the pressure she was under.
Sophie Wessex isn't very thin and nor is Camilla. Here's a notion OP. All women are different.

Grasslands · 24/05/2018 07:06

hard to say with photoshop being so prevelent. They look happy.

Juells · 24/05/2018 07:10

I was 7st 2 until I had my first baby, then I went down to 6st 10 :( I didn't want to be that thin, I just couldn't put on any weight. Even now, after menopause, I'm just over 9st (I think, haven't weighed myself for years). It always seemed to me that I didn't have the reserves of energy that I'd have had if I could've just put on a stone.

It's difficult to put on weight if you're naturally thin. People aren't necessarily dieting, just because they're thin.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 07:12

Diana always looked a healthy weight to me though, but it turned out she was bulimic.

Some of the 80s supermodels e.g Marie Helvin, Jerry Hall were positively Amazonian compared with models today.

TammySwansonTwo · 24/05/2018 07:37

Serious eyerolling at the people saying a size 6 (which I doubt MM is to be honest, probably a 4 if that) is normal size. Most women would be clinically underweight at that dress size. Menstrual cycles can cease when you’re as little as 4lb underweight. I see all the faux concern for the health of those who are overweight, but never for the health of the large proportion of women in the public eye who are clearly significantly underweight. Why is that? I struggled with eating disorders in my youth and spent lots of time in groups for those with anorexia and I see the same physical signs in female public figures constantly. But it’s those who are a size 14 up who get all the “concern”.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/05/2018 07:41

I was thinking about Fergi, and how tge press referred to her as the Duchess of Pork, just because she was not rake thin. However, other Royals have more hourglass shapes, Princess Beatrice and Eugeni(Sp), Countess of Wessex, and Zara Phillips.

Pengggwn · 24/05/2018 07:43

SerenDippitty

Not that I can see.

Juells · 24/05/2018 07:45

You're viewing them through the eyes of someone who had an eating disorder. I was naturally thin, my DDs were (and still are) naturally thin, and I went ballistic when they were teenagers because their SM (who has a morbidly obese DD) kept giving them booklets with titles like How To Recognise You Have An Eating Disorder. 😡 She was convinced they were anoerexic because they were thin. I had to practically start WWIII to get her to back off and stop talking about food with them.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 24/05/2018 07:45

Maybe the portions at the palaces are tiny?

BertrandRussell · 24/05/2018 07:49

I can quite understand why they are so thin-but I really wish that slimness and health was being offered as aspirational for girls, rather than thinness. I remember listening to a model-I think it might have been Elle McPherson-talking very powerfully about not wanting to be considered a role model, that her body shape was actually unnatural, that she was a freak of nature enhanced by a very restricted diet. And that there is no way the overwhelming majority of women could look like her even if they lived on half a daily grapefruit.

LapinR0se · 24/05/2018 07:50

I don’t know about Meghan, I’ve only ever seen her thin. But Kate was strong and curvy when she was younger and became totally emaciated after the wedding. Some of the pictures from the Canadian tour are shocking.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/05/2018 07:50

Oh yes Camilla, she is larger. Mabey those people have a don't care attitude, take us as we are, whereas Cathrine and Meghan feel the pressure more.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/05/2018 07:51

Even the Queen is not as thin.

BertrandRussell · 24/05/2018 07:51

"I'm just over 9st (I think, haven't weighed myself for years)"
If you haven't weighed yourself for years, how can you be so precise?

Bluntness100 · 24/05/2018 07:52

I really don't see what the aim of this thread is. Both women are slim. So what? It's not exactly an unusual characteristic to have.

People are starting to lose sight of what a healthy bmi looks like. Neither woman is very thin op, simply slim.

BertrandRussell · 24/05/2018 07:52

"Oh yes Camilla, she is larger"

Positively elephantine.......

traciebanbanjo · 24/05/2018 07:55

they are only relatively thin due to most adults being overweight and obese IMO.

Juells · 24/05/2018 07:57

You have no idea how easy it is to lose disastrous amounts of weight when you are naturally thin. Any stress and the weight melts away.

Juells · 24/05/2018 08:04

Think about what's been going on in Meghan's life recently. Her family trying to sabotage her at every turn. She'd obviously lost a load of weight in the week leading up to her wedding, as the dress was too loose on her. She probably had the last fitting a week before, and then continued to shrink with the pressure being piled on, scuzzy half-sister arriving at the airport with her even scuzzier sons dressed in wife-beaters and baseball caps, to be all over TV, her half-brother before that 'writing an open letter' advising Harry not to marry her... I'm surprised she didn't shrink even more.

Tinkobell · 24/05/2018 08:08

They can't win. If they were normal media would say they're 'fat', if they're skinny media would say 'anorexic'. The fact that you comment on their bodies and not those of william and Harry frankly says it all. Women's bodies are open for public scrutiny and comment whereas a blokes just a bloke. You've started a daft brainless thread that fuels the fact that women are their own worst enemies.

GrannyGrissle · 24/05/2018 08:09

Because fat=common as muck innit? Doubt they shop at live on takeaway/deep fried beige (Ordering Dominoes to Buck Palace or wherever it is they live Grin).
They can afford to ski/horse ride/have a personal trainer do all the lovely fun healthy activities their hearts desire.
Or is it because they are parasites and parasites don't get fat?

FriendlyOcelot · 24/05/2018 08:14

Speaking as someone who is similar to Kate in figure, I believe they’re both slim women who eat carefully and work out.

There are times when they might weigh less, and times when they might weigh more due to external circumstances and pressures.

That is all.

As a side note, I too have weighed more in the past (not just post partum but also when I finished my growth spurt at 15) and both times I had got into the habit of eating more, eg a tub of ice cream or a packet of biscuits of an evening. That’s pretty unhealthy and led to quite unnecessary weight gain, so who’s to say KM wasn’t in the habit of eating a lot of unhealthy student Scooby snacks when she was younger but has now established a healthy eating routine which has seen the pounds drop off naturally? So her current weight is actually the healthy weight of a woman on a healthy diet, and her previous weigh wasn’t ‘natural’? It’s hardly surprising that’s she’s conscious nowadays given that she’s in the public eye.

Meghan’s legs are thin but naturally so. She’d probably have thin legs even if she were three stone overweight.

By the way, it seems that the trend for having stronger, curvier bodies is on the rise. Both my tall, lean teenage dds want more ‘hips n ass’. I think this might be the way things are headed over the next couple of decades; ‘skinny’ won’t be so fashionable then.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/05/2018 08:16

Most rich women under a certain age are thin, more so if they're in the public eye.
Your opinion that they are 'too thin' comes from the average person being larger than they should be.

Murane · 24/05/2018 08:16

If I had a personal trainer, chef, and nanny to allow me to eat/sleep/exercise I'd be tiny! Plus if I had access to designer clothes I'd make sure I fitted into them!

Gwenhwyfar · 24/05/2018 08:18

"Maybe the portions at the palaces are tiny?"

Most fine dining is small portions.
Rich people don't have to go to 'all you can eat' places to get their money's worth!
