Tattooed nurses

Would you be put off by a tattooed nurse? At the moment I’ve only got them in places a patient would never see but I do plan to add some to my upper arm in the near future.

Just want to hear your thoughts and reasons!

Nursy hasnt been rude Confused

robotcartrainhat · 23/05/2018 22:42

Id actually prefer a tattooed nurse tbh! Just because ive had some lovely tattooed nurses. So in my mind they seem kinder and more understanding than none tattooed nurses. I know thats a massive generalisation but thats how ive experienced it.

Rollonweekend · 23/05/2018 23:08

I work in a professional environment where some people have tattoos (Tech). I would certainly have no problem with a tattooed nurse! The world is changing and tattoos can be lovely and personal. When you're vulnerable in hospital I'd rather be cared for by a person who's real self was being portrayed, it's reassuring.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/05/2018 23:11

I don't like tattoos...so I won't get any myself. As long as they're not offensive (racist, sexist, association with criminality etc), up to the individual.

Distractotron · 23/05/2018 23:12

I work in a hospital. There are lots of tattooed nurses, therapists, even doctors. It's not unusual these days!

YoucancallmeVal · 23/05/2018 23:14

Would not bother me. My elderly father would be unimpressed.

SusanneLinder · 23/05/2018 23:49

Some places dont employ with tattoos-hospices and some geriatric wards.
Since when?
My DH is a nurse and has worked in both. He has quarter/ half sleeves which can easily be seen with his uniform, and has never had an issue . He was never asked about tattoos at interview.
His employers/ patients are FAR more interested in his nursing skills than whether he has tattoos or not.
My DD also has tattoos. She is a ICU paed nurse and has never been an issue either.

RomeoBunny · 23/05/2018 23:54

My friend is a padiatric sister and is about 75% tattooed (so just her head neck and hands/feet really that aren't). She has had them for over a decade and never had any issues in any placement or workplace.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2018 00:16

whiteroseredrose just confused by the idea of going into a restaurant, ordering, the waiting coming over with your food showing his tattoos and you saying oh no, I can't eat here, you might be unclean

tomatosalt · 24/05/2018 00:23

My friend (also a nurse) has a lot of tattoos with some in visible places. Be prepared to field off a lot of comments from older patients. ‘That won’t wash off you know!’, ‘In my day only criminals had tattoos’
But the majority of people say nothing at all and occasionally she is complimented.

crazycatgal · 24/05/2018 00:40

When I was in A & E a couple of weeks ago I saw a nurse with 2 full sleeves and a neck tattoo. I was surprised but happy to see someone so heavily tattooed in such a role.

My postnatal nurse was heavily tattooed all over her arms, had bright red obviously dyed hair and a tongue ring. I fucking loved her as she calmed my baby, supported my breast feeding and was the most caring person I came across. So I would probably prefer tattoed/pierced as i have such fond memories!

AjasLipstick · 24/05/2018 05:23

Aw you've reminded me of when DD2 had to go to casualty after a bump on her head ....she was only about 2 and the male nurse had tattoos all over both forearms and he showed them to her and let her touch them whilst she was examined. A very good distraction they made.

lostinsunshine · 24/05/2018 06:24

It is important to consider the reaction of elderly patients. Some , after initial wariness, will go with it, especially if the nurse has good interpersonal skills. But others may not.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 24/05/2018 06:30

As long as they can do thier job adequately I don’t care what they look like, piercings, tattoos, crazy hairstyle.

chavtasticfirebanger · 24/05/2018 06:35

Hoist youre gonna get lynched here!

saison4 · 24/05/2018 06:41

wouldn't bother me at all but I know that my mum & dad would really dislike it. I guess it is in some parts also a general thing and canvassing MN for opinion might give you skewed results.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 24/05/2018 06:41

I work for the emergency services (the one with the big red appliances with blue lights) trust me when I say that no one gives a shit how many tattoos I’ve got or where they are when we turn up. It makes no difference to you doing your job how many tattoos, piercings or anything else you choose to have. Be warned though whilst many are very accepting, many still aren’t, so check your workplaces policy on it Smile.

MrsDilber · 24/05/2018 07:10

No, not at all. Go for it.

lostinsunshine · 24/05/2018 07:14

We are not talking emergency situations, though. We are talking day to day nursing. It is pretty arrogant to think that elderly people as a group don't care or shouldn't care.

Fflamingo · 24/05/2018 07:19

I think you would have to be good at your job.
I was at a meeting on child support with a SW tattooed all over, strange shaggy top on, young girl who I will probably turn out to be a good SW. Everyone else was in traditional plain top, black trousers, and unfortunately she was way out of her depth. The child's future was in her hands. The outfit, tatts made me think she was too interested in her own edgy looks and appearance and she should be concentrating on the child.

SOME People want a broad, maybe tattooed, cropped haired fireman or soldier. They want a muscular dietitian. A smartly dressed business woman with neat, naturally coloured hair

Fixed that for you.

It's the way it is

Not in my experience

MrsMozart · 24/05/2018 07:54

I wouldn't give a flying fig (so long as not racist, etc.).

They're not my cup of tea, but I don't get to dictate what other folks do with their bodies. Both my DDs have tattoos. I've told them both to consider the type of work they want to do. Up to them if they take the chance with a tattoo placement.
