To think housecoats were a great idea?

Had a massive amount of hoovering and floor washing to do this morning as guests were booked for the weekend. Also beds to make up and final polishing.

Knowing how hot & sweaty I was going to get, I did it in my dressing gown as there was no point showering & getting dressed as I would need another shower.

I was hoovering the balcony (as you do) and hoping no-one accidentally got an eyeful..... then it occurred to me - housecoats!!

That way, you would look decent if you needed to open the front door or pop out to the bins etc

I'm imagining something not too fussy, with big pockets for 'bits' .

Have I liost the bloody plot?

Isn't it the same thing? I'm lost lol

Grin

I would need to see the housecoat before I could pass judgement on whether it was decent or not!

Katinkka · 18/05/2018 16:17

Don't you wear a housecoat over your clothes though?

PureColdWind · 18/05/2018 16:18

I just wear a comfortable hoodie at home.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 18/05/2018 16:18

Btw Op I have a hoody and old jogging bottoms that i stick on in the mornings to do my cleaning, walk the dog etc before having my shower. It means I’m “dressed” if someone knocks the door or sees me in the garden.

CornishYarg · 18/05/2018 16:19

YANBU - you've reminded me that my grandmother had a selection of floral housecoats. Very practical especially the two deep pockets, which she often kept dog treats in!

CornishYarg · 18/05/2018 16:19

Although yes, she wore them over her clothes, not instead of...

LouLouLove · 18/05/2018 16:20

get a zip up dressing gown from m&s - I love mine

ShotsFired · 18/05/2018 16:21

Personally I would like to rock a fancy tabard. I like the poppers on the side.

SaucyJack · 18/05/2018 16:21

Yes! You've lost the plot. Isn't a baggy dressing-gown more of a hindrance than a help.

This is what yoga pants are for. No one actually does yoga in them, obv.

PrimalLass · 18/05/2018 16:22

My gran had loads - she called them her pinnies.

MismatchedPJs · 18/05/2018 16:25

Yes, I've actually been tempted to buy myself one of those tabard things for cleaning Grin. My neighbours might think me a loon though. I think I'd be up for a housecoat revival.

Chickenagain · 18/05/2018 16:25

I'm thinking a denim one perhaps. Housecoats are button up, dressing gowns are tie up (well mine is)...
So, a below knee, denim loose dress, big pockets nothing underneath so keep cooler.... Apparently, poppers rather than buttons as buttons make DP feel ill...
And a lined waterproof pocket to keep a damp cloth ready....
Built in boob support....
Have I missed anything?

I have yoga pants but they are for normal cleaning. This was very much an absolute race against time and copious amounts of swear involved!

Have recently been rewatching Mad Men and old Corrie and they all have them! I want one!

dangermouseisace · 18/05/2018 16:28

I found a housecoat...

To think housecoats were a great idea?
Doyoumind · 18/05/2018 16:33

My grandma had a gingham one - button up and big pockets. She definitely wore it over clothes though!

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/05/2018 16:36

I call my dressing gown a housecoat. But I'm Scottish.

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 16:38

My nana had housecoats were horrible swirly brown things though but she used to do her housework in them and put one on to smoke cigarettes

humphreysabout · 18/05/2018 16:39

I can't imagine cleaning in my dressing gown. Even the thought is annoying me. I'd rather stick to my joggers and a t-shirt.

Dermymc · 18/05/2018 16:41

I agree. Like aprons with shoulders.

Often I get baby gunk on me before leaving for work. A house coat would solve this problem instantly.

boho2u · 18/05/2018 16:41

I have my nan's old house coats and love them. I'm also an apron wearer though

cjt110 · 18/05/2018 16:41

Tabard.

InkSnail · 18/05/2018 16:42

I'd like a housecoat too! Often clean the bathroom in pyjamas before a shower. If you've done the cleaning in normal clothes, do you feel comfortable going about your day, cooking. working etc. and showering later? Or would you only clean (for example) the bathroom if you could shower straight after?

reallybadidea · 18/05/2018 16:43

Hang on...did you say buttons make your dp feel ill?! WTF?
