To think housecoats were a great idea?

Had a massive amount of hoovering and floor washing to do this morning as guests were booked for the weekend. Also beds to make up and final polishing.

Knowing how hot & sweaty I was going to get, I did it in my dressing gown as there was no point showering & getting dressed as I would need another shower.

I was hoovering the balcony (as you do) and hoping no-one accidentally got an eyeful..... then it occurred to me - housecoats!!

That way, you would look decent if you needed to open the front door or pop out to the bins etc

I'm imagining something not too fussy, with big pockets for 'bits' .

Have I liost the bloody plot?

I'll ask him. He is self-employed and doesn't wear shirts or suits to work. There is a picture of him at a wedding (not his Grin) looking really uncomfortable - maybe that's why!
He has no fly-button jeans though, is very sporty so always in a T-shirt or fleece. That's probably why the penny didn't drop with me I s'pose.

It sounds as though his entire life may have been shaped by the avoidance of buttons Grin

🤣 very probably!

I'm just still shocked that a housecoat and dressing gown are different!

MismatchedPJs · 18/05/2018 19:35

I'm going to channel SirVix and Planet's grannies - I reckon a cotton wrapover pinny has to be the way to go.

Clutterbugsmum · 18/05/2018 19:43

My mum wore a housecoat in the 1970's, and us kids(me, brother and sister) would put worms in her pockets as she didn't like them Grin.

GrandTheftWalrus "I call my dressing gown a housecoat. But I'm Scottish."

I don't call my dressing gown a housecoat. But I'm Scottish. Grin

catandtheteapot · 18/05/2018 20:12

I just wear an apron. I have a small selection.

Tara336 · 18/05/2018 20:14

My man always wore them, that brings back memories

AnneProtheroe · 18/05/2018 20:24

In my first Saturday job (way back when) I was on the housecoat department. A glorious array of polyester and nylon brightly coloured fire hazards which sold incredibly well.

I suppose it could have been worse. There was a vacancy on the corset department too...

liz70 · 18/05/2018 20:24

"My man always wore them"

I bet he looked gawjus. Smile

flapjackfairy · 18/05/2018 20:32

I am another one who hates buttons. They make me cringe! I have been like it my whole life and thought it was just me until i saw several others mention it on mn.
So i am not as weird as i thought i was apparently !

Singlenotsingle · 18/05/2018 20:34

How about a onesie?

halfwitpicker · 18/05/2018 20:38

Does the house coat have magic properties or something, like it encourages you to do housework? Like, you buy new gym stuff then start working out?

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/05/2018 20:43

Dish and Walrus do you call them "goonys"? (My Scottish OH does)

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/05/2018 21:00

A goony is a nightgown. Usually a lovely flannel number!

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 21:03

Aww a goony made me all nostalgic I think im the right age for a goony they look airy Grin

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/05/2018 21:07

Ah yes the lightweight ones for the summer are nice and flowery!

There's a shop in Glasgow that sells them. Primark etc sell night shirts which are different.

Midthreademergencynamechange · 18/05/2018 21:07

I can't do anything in my dressing gown except drink tea or be ill. I could never do proper housework!

mimibunz · 18/05/2018 21:10

My gran had a few housecoats that she made herself. She would sometimes answer the door wearing one. Controversial for a proper woman! Grin

SlowlyShrinking · 18/05/2018 21:13

There’s a stall selling tabards and housecoats in the inside market near us. I was looking at them the other day and wondering if their days are numbered. Apparently not, though Smile

MojoMoon · 18/05/2018 21:15

There is a shop in Stamford Hill, Hackney called Finx Housecoats.

So you know where to go for a wide choice.
Guess they are still popular with the ultra orthodox

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 21:16

I used to buy late Mils goonys in BHS

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 21:18

I wonder if it is a modesty thing with Orthadox jews they are full length so you can see why they might be popular,
