To think housecoats were a great idea?

Had a massive amount of hoovering and floor washing to do this morning as guests were booked for the weekend. Also beds to make up and final polishing.

Knowing how hot & sweaty I was going to get, I did it in my dressing gown as there was no point showering & getting dressed as I would need another shower.

I was hoovering the balcony (as you do) and hoping no-one accidentally got an eyeful..... then it occurred to me - housecoats!!

That way, you would look decent if you needed to open the front door or pop out to the bins etc

I'm imagining something not too fussy, with big pockets for 'bits' .

Have I liost the bloody plot?

That's what I want to know about! back up! Buttons make DP feel ill?

viques · 18/05/2018 16:46

People used to wear wrap over pinnies for housework. When I say "people" I mean women of course, though I have memories of the characters played by Les Dawson and that man from Corrie, two "women " talking over their back garden fence in wrap over pinnies.....

halfwitpicker · 18/05/2018 16:46

Ex MIL used to wear them.

Nuff said.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/05/2018 16:48

I have some that belonged to my Great Aunt. There is. Nylon 1960s one I just found in a bag of her stuff. I’ll go and root it out and take a pic. I am fond of a pinnie myself, but the added sleeves are good for cleaning.

viques · 18/05/2018 16:48

Koumpoumophobia is the fear of buttons.

NoseTitZilla · 18/05/2018 16:48

Hold on. Please elaborate on buttons making your DH feel ill. Are you a button free household? Confused

astoundedgoat · 18/05/2018 16:50

I'd love a housecoat.

crunchymint · 18/05/2018 16:52

I have a traditional Amish apron that has shoulders and long sleeves, but is more stylish than nylon housecoats.

Bumble1830 · 18/05/2018 16:53

I've always thought a dressing gown and a house coat is the same thing too....Do you mean something like a smoking jacket? They are a little more "dressy" than a dressing gown/house coat. Although I wear my house coat whenever i'm home, its the first thing I do when I get in from work [SMILE]

Juells · 18/05/2018 16:54

Oooh now I want a traditional Amish apron even though I never do any cleaning.

As others have said... Apparently, poppers rather than buttons as buttons make DP feel ill... What???!!!

SayImADreamer · 18/05/2018 16:55

You need a toast coat.
£££££££ though...

I was getting all iritated at the thought of long sleeves getting in the way of cleaning and getting damp. But I remember those nylon wrap around pinnies and that would be just the ticket. I don't expect they would be tricky to knock one up

SirVixofVixHall · 18/05/2018 16:58

Here is is. Turquoise and dark brown nylon.

Button phobia is surprisingly common.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/05/2018 17:00

For me, the connection between housecoats and a type of meaningless domestic drudgery often foisted on women is just too strong. I'd be going for an artist's smock and then you can at least pretend to yourself that you are engaged in something creative.

liz70 · 18/05/2018 17:01

"did you say buttons make your dp feel ill?! WTF?"

Me too. Especially those big slimy pearlescent round ones you find on those nylon quilted housecoats. Ewww. It's a recognised phobia.

dentydown · 18/05/2018 17:01

I bought myself a tabard and love it. I don’t wear it because everyone takes the piss.

LionAllMessy · 18/05/2018 17:04

It just sounds like the American word for a dressing-gown.

Like how they call the pavement a sidewalk. They like things to be more literal.

liz70 · 18/05/2018 17:04

I have virtually no clothes with buttons - short and long sleeve tops, skirts with stretch or zipped waists, cardigans with zips or no fastenings. I avoid buttons whenever possible.

Juells · 18/05/2018 17:05

@SirVixofVixHall

Here is is. Turquoise and dark brown nylon.

That is the ugliest thing I've ever laid eyes on. The brown pocket is the final straw.

elisenbrunnen · 18/05/2018 17:11

I got given a lovely Nylon Shocking Pink housecoat one year from MIL. With black ruffles at the front.

Even the charity shop didn't want it.

Nousernameforme · 18/05/2018 17:11

m.ebay.co.uk/itm/1930-1940s-style-wartime-crossover-apron-re-enactment-kitchen-u. This sort of thing can't be doing with damp sleeves

ModreB · 18/05/2018 17:15

My GM used to wear these. But in a floral pattern. I think they're great Grin

TomRavenscroft · 18/05/2018 17:16

I live in a very Jewish neighbourhood and there's a housecoat shop.
