To think housecoats were a great idea?

Had a massive amount of hoovering and floor washing to do this morning as guests were booked for the weekend. Also beds to make up and final polishing.

Knowing how hot & sweaty I was going to get, I did it in my dressing gown as there was no point showering & getting dressed as I would need another shower.

I was hoovering the balcony (as you do) and hoping no-one accidentally got an eyeful..... then it occurred to me - housecoats!!

That way, you would look decent if you needed to open the front door or pop out to the bins etc

I'm imagining something not too fussy, with big pockets for 'bits' .

Have I liost the bloody plot?

"I wonder if it is a modesty thing with Orthadox jews they are full length"

Yes it is, see my earlier post.

Kleptronic · 18/05/2018 21:26

I dunno about housecoats but I've always wanted a house dress à la Margo in The Good Life.

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 21:28

Sorry Liz I got sidetracked by the goonys Grin》

Feckitall · 18/05/2018 21:28

My nan wore one like Modre has linked...

UserV · 18/05/2018 21:28

Nah, they would just be a massive hindrance. And it would make me hot.

UserV · 18/05/2018 21:34

@GrandTheftWalrus THAT isn't a housecoat up there ^

THIS is one.

Your pic is a nightdress...

Theweasleytwins · 18/05/2018 21:38

I vaguely remember a to show about facing fear with possibly Noel Edmunds on where someone had to go in a Perspex box with the people that have button sewn all over their clothes

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/05/2018 21:39

Yeah it's a goony

RitaSpanner · 18/05/2018 21:40

You can use Prisoner Cell Block H as inspiration! Wink

I can't do anything in my dressing gown except drink tea or be ill. I could never do proper housework

This ^ The idea of cleaning and tidying in a dressing dress makes me feel weirdly...I don't know... sort of claustrophobic-ish? Confused It's not the right word, but it is the right feeling^.

I hate things flapping around me. I do any cleaning in leggings ( I know, but I'm not going anywhere) and a tee shirt. No flapping!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 18/05/2018 21:42

dressing gown, obviously...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/05/2018 21:45

I have a selection ( selection I tell you) of Carole Hochman zip fronted robes (as my DH calls them , my Leeshure Robes )

Full length long sleeved plush lilac
Full length long sleeved not so plush navy
Shorter length short sleeved thin velour pink
Sleeveless black/white for Summer and hot flushing

But I don;t do housework in them, they;re for Leesure Wink

Twofurrycats · 18/05/2018 21:45

my great great aunt (born 1904) used to say if we came round before 12 we'd catch her in her desabees! This was her housework outfit. Turned out to be a corruption of déshabillé although she didn't mean scantily dressed. Just not dressed for 'receiving company'.

ADishBestEatenCold · 18/05/2018 21:49

"Dish and Walrus do you call them "goonys"? (My Scottish OH does)"

I don't, but as Walrus says that would be a nightgown.

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 21:51

Oh 70s they sound spectacular they really do 😂

flumpybear · 18/05/2018 21:57

I think of Nora batty re housecoats Grin

Lisette40 · 18/05/2018 22:01

Cross post!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/05/2018 22:02

Yes, you definitely can't wear a housecoat without accessorising it with wrinkled stockings, furry bootees and pink plastic curlers under a headscarf.

Lisette40 · 18/05/2018 22:03

My granny had one with sleeves. Happy memories of her.

WidoWanky · 18/05/2018 22:06

My housework days involve me staying in my sleeveless pj's, then donning a pinny. Pocket for odds and sods, and should the door go, useful coverage for saggy boobs😆

The pinney works wonders. It makes me work! Once i take it off, housework or cooking becomes a distant memory😊

Lisette40 · 18/05/2018 22:06

Actually Granny's was blue but like Mrs Doyle's (might be an Irish thing as Gran was from Dublin )

Chickenagain · 18/05/2018 22:06

The prisoners of cell block H seem to have the right idea! There is such a broad spectrum - some are definitely dressing gowns - others are a bit breakfasty....
I do have as grey tabard - I work in a charity shop and it's pockets are fab. I have an amazing gardening apron, but there is no bum in it.

I think maybe a kaftan with a pocket?
