To think dds tonsillitis should have improved by now?

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 12:33

She's been on antibiotics since Saturday. Her tonsils are just two lumps of white and yellow, completely closing off the back of her mouth. She can't eat and can only drink by forcing it down and crying. Her tongue is swollen and she can't speak properly.

There's been literally no change in fact if anything it's getting worse.

She has her first exam on Wednesday SadShock

Ring 101 or the GP. Tonsilitis is awful but after 6 days of antibiotics I would expect improvement, not this.

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2018 12:38

Hi Scabbersley, I hate to say it but that's exactly how DS was. He was literally throwing up the gunk. As you know he turned out to have GF.

Namechange128 · 18/05/2018 12:39

Poor her, that's awful! Unfortunately a lot of tonsillitis is viral and not bacterial, so the antibiotics don't always make a difference - and there are some really nasty ones around, DH had one and was still coughing up blood 3 weeks later Shock
I'd definitely take her back to the gp asap, hope things improve.

keepingbees · 18/05/2018 12:39

Yes they should have worked by now. Take her back, she may need something stronger. Also ask for them to swab her throat as she might need a specific type of antibiotics.
I recommend gargling with salt water. I'm prone to tonsillitis and this always helps me

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 18/05/2018 12:44

I'd get her back to the doctor before the weekend, OP.

bazingabazinga · 18/05/2018 12:45

Get her checked to make sure it’s not Quinsy.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 18/05/2018 12:45

No!! Not 101 that's the police, it's 111, that's the out of hours medical number.

Invisimamma · 18/05/2018 12:49

I get recurrent tonsillitis. It’s terrible, the pain is horrendous. I had it a couple of weeks ago and I’m still wiped out.

Difflam spray helps a little, you can get it over the counter and some strong Prescription only painkillers (codine/Cocodamol).

Suck on ice cubes, sometimes toast is good to eat if you can manage as it seems to scrape some of the gunk away Envy. Flat coke and lucozade too keeps energy up. And sleep, lots of sleep!

Hope she’s feeling batter soon.

Newkidontheblock22 · 18/05/2018 12:53

I would definitely get her seen, however I have just suffered 5 weeks of tonsillitis which took 3 courses of antibiotics to shift!

This is by no means usual but it can be really nasty and long lasting. Ask GP for difflam mouthwash as this is good too.

yikesanotherbooboo · 18/05/2018 12:56

I agree , speak to Doctor. This is probably viral and glandular fever is one such cause and can be tested for.

TwitterQueen1 · 18/05/2018 12:58

Oops! brain fail! sorry OP and thanks jimijack. Blush

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 12:58

They are refusing to test for gf Sad I thought they had before but they just did a white blood count.

OP posts:
RoadToRivendell · 18/05/2018 12:58

I'm so sorry to hear this. I agree it sounds like GF.

I still look back at my son's bout of tonsilitis as the lowest days of motherhood. So, so, grim. Really feel for you and your daughter.

RoadToRivendell · 18/05/2018 13:00

Why?

Can you have her seen privately?

I'd get in touch with her school today.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:01

Dr in hospital said they don't routinely test for gf and even if they did results would take weeks and they don't chase it. He said they might consider testing if her symptoms lasted a month. If she's like this for a month she'll be dead so not much point in testing then!

I have GPS app at 3

I am absolutely knackered been up all night for the last few days

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2018 13:09

I still don't get the results taking weeks thing. DS1 had the blood test at 8.30am on the Friday and GP rang to say he had GF at 11am the next day. Confused

I suppose the thing is even if it is GF as far as the illness goes it doesn't change anything, except they told DS1 to stop the antibiotics.
We needed to know to get the right documents re the exams he would miss.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:12

I said she's got exams and he just shrugged and said we still don't do anything.

I'm afraid I said well it's alright for you you are a doctor I expect you did very well in your a levels, how would you have liked to be this ill and flunked your chance of medical school Blush

Disclaimer I was knackered and worried and couldnt quite believe what he was saying g.

My DD (at uni) had tonsilitis a few months ago. She went to the Dr and he sent her straight to hospital. She spent the rest of the day on the MDU hooked up to an ECG and being monitored. I guess they suspected meningitis / GF / sepsis on top of the tonsilitis. She apparently had blood in her urine too. She was then ill again around 10 days later and they tested her again. They didn't find anything (other than blood in urine again, but not serious apparently).

I understand it's very difficult to test for GF - if they're doing WBC that's good - they'll be able to tell from that if any further investigations need to be done.

I don't know why they don't take tonsils out anymore. I had mine out at 6 because I was so ill every winter. It's a horrible illness. Fingers crossed for you OP.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:16

The first gp she saw last week just said there was nothing wrong with her. No urine sample nothing. He did ask her twice about her sexual history though Hmm

RoadToRivendell · 18/05/2018 13:18

OMG it's her A-levels?

Poor girl.

Have you been in touch with her school? Can you get an extension?

SilverHairedCat · 18/05/2018 13:19

It could be becoming quinsy. Glad you have a GP appointment.

I had mine out aged 23 after years of 8+ bouts per year and it was an awful experience.

Ask the GP for children's liquid antibiotics, I found that easier to cope with than trying to fit the pills in the non-existent gap in my throat.

Lots of ice lollies and iced drinks. I also ate crisps to scratch the throat - salted chipsticks were good for that

SilverHairedCat · 18/05/2018 13:20

But to be fair, there is no treatment for GF, it's viral.
