To think dds tonsillitis should have improved by now?

She's been on antibiotics since Saturday. Her tonsils are just two lumps of white and yellow, completely closing off the back of her mouth. She can't eat and can only drink by forcing it down and crying. Her tongue is swollen and she can't speak properly.

There's been literally no change in fact if anything it's getting worse.

She has her first exam on Wednesday SadShock

Shes literally just laying there crying in terror about her exams. There's nothing I can say that seems to help

I know that there is no treatment.

She wants to know for school purposes

I can't get my head round why people don't understand this.

As a PP said, get her checked for quinsy. I had it at 16 and was hospitalised for a week, it was worse pain than childbirth. Hope she improves soon.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:22

Also she rides competitively and of she has gf shouldn't ride for 8 weeks (spleen) whereas if 'just' tonsillitis then she could start again when she feels better.

Apparently she does t have a quinsy says dr

Despite her uvula being squashed between two huge rotten looking tonsils and her weird voice

The doctor can still write her a sick note, whether they change their opinion on the diagnosis or not. It almost doesn't matter to the college or exam board what the illness is - she'll either need a note or not, that's about it. You're doing the right things.

I know it's awful, tonsillitis ruined 2 years of university exams for me, so I really do understand how she's feeling.

Unfortunately mine were stress-related and exams massively aggravated it.

SilverHairedCat · 18/05/2018 13:28

I thought she was being seen at 3pm?

carringtonm · 18/05/2018 13:31

I "didn't have quinsy" according to three GPs and four ENT doctors at the hospital (after I was eventually admitted for not being able to eat or drink for three days - was 28 weeks pregnant at the time). Turned out it was quinsy and I had to have it syringed after an intensive course of IV antibiotics and steroids.

Insist that something else needs to be done, and if the GPs won't listen, go to A&E - quinsy can be dangerous.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:31

Yes she is, she was seen on Tuesday as well

My doctors say they do t do sick notes either Confused

Honestly this whole thing has scrambled my brain

Ginorchoc · 18/05/2018 13:39

When did she last eat?

I’ve had tonsillitis a few times as has daughter and mine usually goes after about 4 days apart from one occasion where I hadn’t eaten for several days so I was admitted for 24 hrs and out on a drip which cleared it up fairly quickly. It’s awful though it’s like flu on steroids. My daughter always has an ear infection a few days later. I hope the doctor is more understanding when you go back.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:47

She ate a spoonful of mash yesterday nothing snjnce. I've just forced her to drink a cup of herb tea as she's not drinking either

OP posts:
carringtonm · 18/05/2018 13:48

Can she suck ice cubes? They're soothing on the throat and will get some fluid into her.

sparklefarts · 18/05/2018 13:48

My doctors say they do t do sick notes either

Eh???

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 13:52

I know sparklefarts!!

I feel like I'm in an alternative reality

sparklefarts · 18/05/2018 14:00

But Drs can't just opt out of the sick note system? Surely?

SilverHairedCat · 18/05/2018 14:04

I think I had to pay for my sick notes for university, as they wouldn't issue a normal NHS one.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 14:04

Maybe it's differ t if it's for work?

OP posts:
Memom · 18/05/2018 14:04

She is clearly very poorly and obviously worried sick by the timing of it.
Have you tried Difflam spray? It won't clear infection but may ease the pain so she can drink/eat which will help her feel better. Good luck Thanks

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 14:06

She has the difflam gargle stuff. She is absolutely worried sick

She's normally very stoic!

OP posts:
SilverHairedCat · 18/05/2018 14:08

The spray may be easier for her to use, as it doesn't need any effort and can be pointed at the most painful spots.

Also, what pain relief is she on? You can get dispersible co-codamol, again may be easier then pills?

knottybeams · 18/05/2018 14:12

Sick notes (med3) are only valid for claiming statutory sick pay from employer. If she's at school/college it's not any use to her and she'd need a private letter. Of course if she has a Saturday job she needs a med3 & can take a copy of it to school. The exam board have their own self certificate forms to fill in. Contact exams officer at school

knottybeams · 18/05/2018 14:12

Employer or jobcentre

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 14:13

I have contacted the exams officer hopefully she can put my mind at rest. I am hoping th docs will at least give her some heavy duty pain relief as apart from anything else I need some sleep!!

If you can afford private there is a place in London that will laser remove tonsils and the recovery is much quicker than normal surgical removal.
