To think dds tonsillitis should have improved by now?

She's been on antibiotics since Saturday. Her tonsils are just two lumps of white and yellow, completely closing off the back of her mouth. She can't eat and can only drink by forcing it down and crying. Her tongue is swollen and she can't speak properly.

There's been literally no change in fact if anything it's getting worse.

She has her first exam on Wednesday SadShock

Can I be silly and ask what GF means?

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 15:04

Glandular fever.

Just waiting to be seen

I didn't have quinsy for 10 days and only on the 4th GP appointment was it diagnosed. I was in a similar state to your poor DD. Good luck with appt, illness recovery and exam resoluion.

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 16:59

What a palaver. Long story but they've finally taken a blood test and after calling in yet another doctor say that it is almost certainly gf. Results back next week. Different antibiotics that work well with bacterial complications of gf, codeine which should help her sleep.

Thanks to whoejve recommended ice lollies, bought a box from lidl on the way home and dd has sucked her way through three already

Good news that something is going on for her! Ice poles in the freezer, and hopefully she'll get some rest tonight.

She'll want to try to eat something with the codeine though, or it might make her feel nauseous. Maybe an ice cold milkshake would help if she can't do solids?

Scabbersley · 18/05/2018 17:05

I've suggested that but she hates milk! I need to have a think.

Fresh fruit smoothie - but nothing acidic!? Avoid orange, in my old experience.... Ouch.

Ice cream? Frozen yoghurt? Warm soup? I'll keep thinking...

youarenotkiddingme · 18/05/2018 17:07

Ice cream milkshake?

Single cream and vanilla ice cream in blender with a flavouring or fresh strawberry/banana.

She will need the calories and fats in her body to help it repair enough to aid her recovery. Also it'll help protect her stomach against all the meds. (That's if she will eat those things not liking milk!)

Foodylicious · 18/05/2018 18:39

Tinned macaroni cheese might go down Ok?
Just warmed up a little

carringtonm · 18/05/2018 18:55

Soup, beans or spaghetti hoops, ice cream and custard was what I can manage when I have tonsil-related issues!

Glad to hear she finally got a diagnosis. It's not unreasonable to ask a teenager about sexual history. Oral sex can lead to STI's in the throat. (Seriously. Gonorrhea of the throat is a thing.)

Etymology23 · 18/05/2018 19:58

I used to like fish pie (made with cheese sauce) as a soft, calorific meal, or mash with cheese mixed through and melting it. Codeine will help her sleep, keep on the ice lollies (high sugar ones?).

Vandree · 18/05/2018 20:07

Your poor daughter! I have always suffered with my tonsils and had quinsy before and now my children suffer too. Its awful to watch them so ill and in so much pain. Im glad she is finally being taken seriously. The diflam spray is very good and gargling with soluble disprin or salty water too. No wonder she is so ill if she is run down with exams and the worry. I survived on hot cornflakes (honestly its lovely, they are mushy and the hot milk is soothing) for weeks and scrambled eggs when I was starting to feel better. Any and all sorts of icepops. Hope she is feeling better soon x

Glitterbugg · 18/05/2018 23:23

You could try pediasure. It is for younger children, it’s milkshakes with vitamins and minerals etc. Helped with my DD when had recurrent tonsillitis and after she had them removed. Or buy build ups and put ice cream in?

FullOfJellyBeans · 19/05/2018 00:19

Definitely take her back, Usually the antibiotics work much more quickly.

64BooLane · 19/05/2018 00:27

When I couldn’t swallow anything without crying (including water/saliva!) I lived on fruit jelly - helped me stay hydrated. It kind of slips down without you having to make swallowing movements.

Etymology23 · 19/05/2018 06:55

Dire times but what about huel or whole fuel as an option? It’s a nutritionally balance’s powder that you make up to a “shake” with water. Not cheap but might get her through exams?

lifechangesforever · 19/05/2018 07:10

This is exactly what happened to me.. had been on antibiotics for a week and called Dr back who said I had to give it more time Hmm my mum took me to A&E on Christmas Eve (I was 23 at the time but was so poorly, I needed mummy!) and I was admitted and didn't come out until NYE.

Turned out I had GF and tonsillitis all rolled into one. Worst Christmas ever! It did mean I got to finally have them removed though, after years of asking.

Scabbersley · 19/05/2018 09:10

Thank you so so much for all your suggestions I really appreciate it. She keeps throwing up as well. I did sit with her last night while she ate half a piece of toast with peanut butter and drank a few mouthfuls of tea. I was strict about her having to eat it. She's supposed to take the new antibiotics with food plus you shouldn't take codeine and nurofen on an empty stomach. I am going to insist she drinks a shake thing today - actually huel is not a bad suggestion! I am going to nutribullet a banana, ice, almond milk, a few oats, maple syrup and a teaspoon of peanut butter

She's lost loads of weight Sad

Sirzy · 19/05/2018 09:14

When I had glandular fever and kept throwing up (to the point where I was nearly hospitalised) it was to do with the antibiotics. I can’t rmemeber if it was the specific one or in general but I was told they were to be avoided with glandaur fever as they can cause extreme reactions

Scabbersley · 19/05/2018 09:15

Oh god I hope its not that as these ones are supposed to be good with gf - not to treat it directly obviously but to treat any bacterial complications (her tonsils are GREEN)

OP posts:
Scabbersley · 19/05/2018 09:16

She had the toast and tea at 4am and I don't think it's come up and she's still sleeping which is good

OP posts:
Etymology23 · 19/05/2018 09:23

Hopefully she will be on the mend now if she is managing to eat things! Poor girl. I have done many many exams on no food and little sleep - and adrenaline can do a lot. It may not be as bad as you think!

Scabbersley · 19/05/2018 10:57

Omg THERE IS AN IMPROVEMENT

A gap between the tonsils and as much pink as yellow

Hallelujah
