how can a wheelchair user user lose weight?

Hi just writing to see if there is any one with advise out there. I am a wheelchair user and have gained roughly two stones in weight because of this. Any advise on how to lose this excess weight?
Thanks all

I am a wheelchair user and have managed to lose 2 and a half stone between 2010 and 2012 (I've maintained my weight since then). I use a local therapy centre for people with neurological conditions (I have MS), and they have a gym where I use an assisted bike. I also joined Slimming World.

At the centre you can cycle with your arms or your legs (or both). I use it twice a week and use the hand bike for 20 minutes on a high resistance. I've found that it's the ONLY way I can exercise hard and get a cardiovascular workout. As a wheelchair user my legs don't work, but because the bike is assisted it will take my legs round in a cycling motion, a movement that stretches them in a way they don't get otherwise. Do you have anywhere near you that has a centre like this? If you don't know of one, your GP should be able to point you in the right direction.

I joined Slimming World because it's not a fad diet, it's eating normal foods. I hasten to add that I have chocolate every day too, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything (although admittedly I can't drink, which makes it easier).

I've found that since losing the weight it's had a positive impact on me physically. It's easier to push myself around all day, and as I suffer with fatigue I've found it has improved.

OK MNHQ are considering a place for us but don't like the name;'

"We're afraid we couldn't go along with the suggested name though as it is likely to offend many MNers!"

Battleax · 20/05/2018 09:29

What have they suggested instead?

I suppose the acceptable name would be “mobility impaired mumsnetters”. Please not “wheelchair users” though. I hate that for various reasons, not least because it makes it sound like a choice, but also because I sometimes still break out the crutches. I’m sure lots of people use different combos of “mobility aid”.

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 09:50

There is already a disabled mners area, would it be a weight loss area specifically, or is it worth sticking an ongoing thread in there?

Battleax · 20/05/2018 09:50

A mobility-impaired area specifically.

“Disabled” is very broad.

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 09:52

Battle, iirc 80% of "wheelchair users" are not completely paralysed anyway - a stat I remember as I'm one of them too Grin

Frequently get the shocked face when I'm upright. Yeah I can walk - in pain and on risk of keeling over - 20 paces with a stick, but that's not really compatible with day to day life!!

ICantCopeAnymore · 20/05/2018 09:55

I love the looks I get when I stand up from my wheelchair to reach for something, or walk for a bit to stretch my spine. Sometimes I want to shout, "It's a miracle!" and other times I feel like my photo will end up as a Meme, like that poor woman in America who stood to reach for something on a high shelf in a shop Grin

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 09:56

Ah yeah, had a look and I'd forgotten it had changed anyway. There's now two areas - mners with sn (under sn) and parents with disabilities (under parenting)

BeyondPink · 20/05/2018 09:57

I'm always paranoid that there's someone behind with a camera ready to turn me into meme v2.0 Grin

Exactly! Although I always think the shock is more at the staggering shuffle I’m managing than the fact I’m upright Grin

I got ambitious this week and decided to “nip” into the CoOp from the car (remember nipping?) with a trolley and a crutch for support. SUCH a bad idea. I only needed four things but it turned into the Krypton factor.

Battleax · 20/05/2018 09:58

Anyone who saw that disaster will know exactly who I am now Grin I barely made it back to the car Blush

I like the idea of a section for chat, for with people with mobility issues. I'm not wheelchair bound, BTW - I have a neurological issue that fluctuates from mild (constant nerve pain & memory issues) to severe (symptoms like I'm having a stroke). Happens fairly often, & leaves me unable to walk, sit myself up, or speak. It's got a lot worse recently & I'm bedbound more often, & the weight has crept on. Currently I'm able to manage with a stick on my good days, but even that is still quite new to me.

sashh · 20/05/2018 10:46

They have not made any suggestion.

Personally I use the term 'cripple' as part of a diotype used in a sociolonguistic sense amongst the 'in group' of people unable to access mainstream services of diet and exercise due to reduced mobility and or pain.

I like the idea of a place for us, not sure on a nam though (I did like the suggestion, but understand why others may not). I'll get thinking Smile

Did you say that to MNHQ? Smile

How about At A Different Pace?

Tortoises? Grin

I always did like that fable.

Oo, I like tortoises Grin

Gagastwin · 20/05/2018 11:31

I have mobility issues, and chronic pain.
I have lost two and a half stone since Christmas. The first stone I lost by living on white meat or fish and salad and two slimfasts in the morning. The weightloss was too slow for me, I have quite a few stone to lose.

So I switched to a keto diet by a brand called Exante and also do intermediate fasting.
I dont eat before 12pm and I don't eat after 8pm I have lost 20 lbs in 4 weeks.

I have a lot more energy and my chronic pain has eased so much!

Exante, you traded all meals for 3 of theirs, they have approx 72 choices from dinner type meals, breakfast cereal, pancakes, pizza, bars, shakes and desserts.
They always have 45% off codes or another offer on so it works out dirt cheap!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2018 11:43

I'd like a special corner. Sadly I feel my mobility issues are starting to affect my relationships. I'm becoming rather bitter and angry. So tired of being brave and vaguely inspirational. I need somewhere to vent with people who get it.
