carrotcake121 · 18/05/2018 08:36

Hi just writing to see if there is any one with advise out there. I am a wheelchair user and have gained roughly two stones in weight because of this. Any advise on how to lose this excess weight?
Thanks all

Weight loss is much more about diet than exercise.

Try low carb. I lost a stone and a half of baby weight and sure wasn't exercising Smile

carot and Ican't

I'm not a wheelchair user yet, but I probably will be. I have arthritis in virtually all my joints.

Yesterday I spent 1 and a half hours with a lovely (NHS) physio. We talked about what I could and couldn't do, what my fears were re exercise and what other things I was doing eg my mental health how I am the day after if I have had to walk / stand.

I could go on and on but basically she is writing a personal exercise plan for , I will have 2 one to one sessions in the gym (not the type gym bunnies go to) with a physio and then go on to hydrotherapy and a 'class' with other people with arthritis.

I realise I am lucky, I have had to go to a hospital 10-15 miles away from home and I may not be able to access some of the services (the physio team can prescribe sessions in the local leisure centre but as I am not local they are not sure I can do it).

Apparently one of the arthritis charities also run a class using the hospital's hydrotherapy pool.

I'm not putting this to gloat, just to show there is some help available.

I'm also trying to eat healthier, I'm using a 'bento' approach to my lunch, so I use a portioned lunch box. Freudian would your carers' be able to follow this?

1 carb
1 protein
1 fruit
1 veg
1 'treat'

Treats can be mini baby bell or a fruit juice. I don't always use the box but keep to the same principles.

Maybe we need a 'cripples corner' - the sporners have one, a place to discuss what does and doesn't work.

link to bento box - honestly I don't work for them.

Hi sashh I'll join you in Cripples Corner! For some reason I find that funny Grin. Though it might put people off who are struggling to accept their disability and really need help? I was there for quite a while Sad

Your post was extremely helpful, thank you! Especially intrigued by the Bento box thingies. Had been struggling with access to food but that's really useful! When I'm really bad they could be kept in a cool-box by the bed. And bring the microwave closer in Winter? Wink

I was also researching hydrotherapy pools around here. It's very difficult to get access to unless you have one of the more 'serious' conditions. I must ask again. Getting the right exercise at the right time with the right people would be very sensible. I would like to build in tiny amounts where I can.

How's the world looking today carrot? Still shit? Grin It's really hard when you don't have a supportive team around you. I too have a supportive husband, but no helpful family and a few lovely friends who are all going through terrible times themselves. It's like being on quicksand and my husband and I are exhausted. Don't give up flower!

Cripples’ corner works for me.

ICantCopeAnymore · 19/05/2018 09:50

Carrot, you sound much the same as me.

I'm up for Cripples' Corner!

Battleax · 19/05/2018 09:52

Let me guess what their conception of “serious” is. Impaired mobility is pretty serious from where I’m sitting. I suppose it’s a rationing thing, but it’s annoying isn’t it?

sashh · 19/05/2018 10:15

OK I have reported the thread and asked for a cripple's corner.

Re the bento idea I meal plan for 3 weeks, where it says something like, 'cheese, bread, beans...' I will in fact be having beans and cheese on toast.

gottaslowdown

You / carer can do a few days at a time and even if you just pock at it throughout the day you at least get some balance of food.

Pick, I meant pick

Hoo hoo hooo! How exciting to come back to. A Cripples Corner Grin Somewhere I belong! Love it.

Yeh BattleAx I ONLY have severe ME/CFS that developed overnight after a virus. It's psychological innit, so I don't need any specialist help, just a bit a CBT and I'm on my way. Can't think why it hasn't worked yet. I'm obviously not trying hard enough or still have that trauma blocking my recovery.....

I wrote a very rude word on my pp then deleted it. We haven't set the ground rules yet for our Cripples Corner Wink

Will MN be ok with cripple? Everyone seems to be so easily offended these days!

ICantCopeAnymore · 19/05/2018 10:37

I think if us actual cripples are OK with it, it should be fine, surely?

gottaslowdown · 19/05/2018 10:39

sashh, great meal plan! Feel hungry now. Who designed that and fills it up? I can never find enough brain cells to do that Confused

I also like a bit of spontaneity in what food I fancy some days. Like pp's I get grumpy about food and lack of control and having to eat what someone else has chosen sometimes makes my teeth itch Grin What a bloody awkward patient!

sashh · 19/05/2018 11:15

Gotta I plan 3 weeks, I don't stick to it each day but I cross off when I have a meal. I get a tesco delivery of everything I need for the 3 weeks.

SuperDandy · 19/05/2018 11:28

I'm totally up for cripple's corner. It's a word I use about myself, and my besties use it too when they are being especially supportive and lovely.

I'm an occasional wheeler. The bit that really chimes for me is the comfort eating, esp when pain is bad and I can take think straight any more. Awful, and spirals up really fast, then takes a long time to get back to safer eating.

MightyMucks · 19/05/2018 11:29

Oh he is Sussex. Hadn’t clocked that yet.

Battleax · 19/05/2018 12:08

Wrong thread Mucks. This is crippled, not royalists.

carrotcake121 · 19/05/2018 19:56

I used to feel I was the only one and felt very sorry for myself, still find it hard to accept my disability. Thanks for all your support

We might be both Battleax Wink

Actually, I'm glad you said that, my brain cell was trying to work out what the hell it meant Confused

gottaslowdown · 19/05/2018 20:28

I used to feel I was the only one and felt very sorry for myself, still find it hard to accept my disability.

I know carrot I was just the same. We all take different routes & time lengths on our disability acceptance journey, so don't be hard on yourself.

This can be down to our character, how we became disabled, how unexpectedly it happened, how much support there was then (and now) and what our unplanned futures will hold. I think it's really hard for those of us who can't work. We struggle with our identity a bit.

Look ahead, not back & make your life as fabulous as you can within your new limitations! (Oh & take anti-depressants to help you over the hurdle if you need to. Doesn't have to be permanent but can be life-changing for some).

Smile

Cripples' Corner sounds good to me.

delilahbucket · 19/05/2018 20:59

It is definitely as simple as eating less. Unfortunately that does mean eating less than the average person because you don't use as much energy, so stock up on high protein foods so you don't feel hungry, and don't deny yourself your favourite foods. I used My Fitness Pal to calorie count. Slow and steady wins the race.

BeyondPink · 19/05/2018 21:18

Fewer calories. And I don't mean like 1500, I mean low
Tis shit :(

I went from fit and able to easily burn 2000> to unable to do much at all and needing about 1200 just to maintain. Funnily enough, the weight piled on.
I'm about five stone over now, and - while I'd like to say I'm getting on top of it, it's far from the first time I've thought that and yet got nowhere Hmm

Akire · 19/05/2018 21:43

Yes really hard when Ned eat lot less but still get hungry even eat healthy. I’m mid 40s so don’t suppose that’s helping at all.
