to have so many driving peeves?

littleemma1 · 17/05/2018 20:28

This is kind of just for fun but I’m intrigued to know what everyone’s top 3 driving peeves are... I’ll start...

  1. No indicators. Got to be. Especially on busy roundabouts, junctions etc or when cutting you up on dual carriageway. Anytime really 🙄
  2. Drivers who don’t say thank you when you’ve done something nice. Like it’s just a little wave but it makes all the difference! 👋🏻
  3. Drivers who can’t stick to one speed limit on a dual carriageway. Going from 70 to 90 to 80 is just silly. I usually find it goes I overtake them, they overtake me, then I overtake them, then they overtake me. It’s ridiculous. Does make me giggle at how much more fuel they’ll use 🤣 (not to brag but I have the luxury of cruise control so I know it’s not me!)

Please do let me know. I’m very curious.

And tailgaters who sit up your arse when you're doing the speed limit!

somewhereovertherain · 18/05/2018 07:49

Forgot twats that treat give ways as slip roads.

And how most fucking roundabouts don’t work. The right of way isn’t just from the right. If your already waiting you have right of way. Only if you arrive together you give way to the right.

kalapattar · 18/05/2018 07:52

The right of way isn’t just from the right. If your already waiting you have right of way. Only if you arrive together you give way to the right

Are you sure on that?

If you are waiting and a car is approaching from the right, they have right of way. Of course, you can risk it and get out but they do have right of way

*185
When reaching the roundabout you should

give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights

check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining

watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all

look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off.

adaline · 18/05/2018 07:54

And people who brake whenever they pass an oncoming vehicle. I drive to work in Cumbria down some fairly windy roads but they're perfectly wide enough for two cars - the only time you'll need to pull over is if there's a wagon, bus or tractor.

But I got stuck behind someone on Tuesday who braked for every single car, cyclist and sheep in the fields. Argh!

This is probably not the best thread to read/contribute to when you're about to drive to work 😂

Zampa · 18/05/2018 08:01

someone on a motorway insisting on doing the speed limit even though the rest of the traffic is going faster

I don't think you can complain about someone obeying the law!

I've only just passed my test so probably guilty of a few of the things listed above. Please bear with me and drivers like me!

littleemma1 · 18/05/2018 08:18

I don’t know what these “merge lanes” are but they sound pretty annoying!!

@QuitMoaning you’re literally one of the only nice “fancy” car drivers I’ve ever come across. But surely even you know that 90% of those other drivers are dicks?!

I do also agree with everyone in the size makes a difference (lol 😝 that could be another thread!) I used to drive a Citroen C1 and people were always thinking they could scare me. We upgraded and got a fiesta but I’m finding people still do it so I’ve told the OH I want a monster truck 😂 not sure we would be able to afford the petrol for my 25 mile commute but it would look good!

littleemma1 · 18/05/2018 08:20

@Zampa put some green P plates on and people will be far more lenient and understand. Without them you just look like you shouldn’t be on the road. I used them after trying not too for a couple of days (8 years ago!) and what a difference it made!

OP posts:
Zampa · 18/05/2018 08:25

@littleemma I don't think I'm bad enough to look like I don't belong on the road! But yes, I do need P plates so when I'm trying to reverse park, people don't judge!

Branleuse · 18/05/2018 08:27

mine is going all the way round the fucking roundabout in the outside lane, usually meaning i cant turn off onto my little side street easily.

littleemma1 · 18/05/2018 08:29

@Zampa if you’re the slightest bit still hesitant and lacking confidence (which is fine, you probably should still be at that stage!) then you will look like you shouldn’t be on the road simply because people won’t/don’t know you’ve only just passed.

Don’t get me started on reverse parking 🙄

Agree on M11/A12, do it quite often when visiting my parents and always the same with people driving round the queue and pushing in at the front. I don't know why they think here so much more important. And always a BMW or an Audi! I would never buy a BMW because I don't want people to think I'm one of those drivers.

Zampa · 18/05/2018 09:22

Fair point @littleemma1. I'm in my late 30s and often worry about people assuming that I've been driving for years.

carringtonm · 18/05/2018 09:48

There's a stretch of dual carriageway on the way to my parents' which has 5 or 6 speed cameras along it. The speed limit is 70 and signs are for the national speed limit.

The amount of people who don't know the speed limit and just break harshly at a camera, then shoot off again, then break harshly at the next one... Or the people who stick to 50mph in the outside lane for the whole road because they're not sure what the speed is. So annoying!

sundowners · 18/05/2018 09:57

I drive an Audi! I'm very polite and am also annoyed by the majority of things listed on here! We're not all horrid, honest...

PoisonousSmurf · 18/05/2018 09:59

People who get too close to my backside. I go slower...

Lweji · 18/05/2018 10:03
  1. Tailgaters
  2. Drivers who overtake into my safety distance from the car in front.
  3. Drivers who overtake and think everyone else, including incoming traffic has to move or break for them

Dangerous drivers in general

Racecardriver · 18/05/2018 10:06
  1. People who just go onto a dual carriageway and expect you to make room for them. I haven't made room because I can't dickhead!
  2. People who drive 10+ miles under the speed limit-that is just dangerous (unless it is one of those windy narrow national speed limit roads or they are approaching a roundabout or traveling a short distance between villages etc.)
  3. People who get passed off and start tailgating, dangerously overtaking etc. When dri era reasonably travel under the speed limit as per the examples give above. I nearly hit some idiot head on the other day because he decided to overtake a long linr of cars that wear gradually allowing down as they approached the roundabout.
Sallystyle · 18/05/2018 10:07

No indicators
Tailgaters
Slow drivers who have no reason to be driving so slowly- The ones doing 30 in a 40 when it is more than safe to do 40.

KittyVonCatsworth · 18/05/2018 10:08

I live in spain and have slightly different peevs here than to the uk;
Roundabouts - any lane goes. They will be on the outside lane to go all around which means if inn going straight ahead in the inside lane I get cut up.
Use of the horn - if you delay even a millisecond at a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights, you’ll get furious blasts (not just a quick beep)
Parking - literally bumper to bumper. I’ve been in the car when someone has parked behind me and bumped me.

Oysterbabe · 18/05/2018 10:10

This thread just reaffirms that I probably won't drive again. People are so needlessly angry and aggressive when behind a wheel in a way they aren't in any other aspect of their life. Recently I saw a woman stopped waiting for an oncoming car to pass. The guy in the car behind her was beeping, gesturing, shouting. Presumably he thought there was enough space for the cars to pass side by side and there was no need to wait. Was it worth making that woman feel anxious, intimidated or even just annoyed because she had lengthened his journey by 30 seconds?

Leafyhouse · 18/05/2018 10:13

Funnily enough, I find my driving personality changes according to what car I'm driving. We have 3 cars: a 2.5 litre V6 wank-mobile, a Ford Focus, and an ancient Campervan. I'm much more chilled out in the campervan - everyone's going to overtake us, we just pootle along in the inside lane singing songs and playing 'I spy'.

In the wankmobile, I get enraged when some twat is drifting along in the outside lane at 70 because "It's the speed limit". That doesn't give you the right to dictate what pace we want to drive at!

In the Focus, it's more of a 'we're all in this together' vibe. Less charging down the right-hand lane, more middle lane stuff. Maybe, like all things British, it's some kind of class issue?

CaptainHammer · 18/05/2018 10:19

All of the ones said. Around here it’s particularly bad for no indicating and drivers who cut the corner and nearly hit me as I approach the end of the road.

Sallystyle · 18/05/2018 10:24

I know you said three but I have a need to go on a rant

What is it with those fuckers who suddenly turn without indicating? Why do they do it?

I had someone up my arse yesterday because I was driving just under the speed limit. I was driving just under because I had a massive van in front who was going slowly. Driving up my arse is not going to make me go quicker. It is not going to make the vehicle in front drive quicker.

The arseholes who pull out on you and give you no choice but to let them out. They then thank you, like you had a choice in the matter.

The mergers who are so desperate to get in front. You are now one car ahead. Why is it so important to you to put your foot down just to get in front of me.

I have only been driving for 4 years and I know we all make mistakes, even those who have been driving for years. When I just passed I made little mistakes often i'm sure. The above happens so frequently though and you know it isn't new drivers who are doing this shit, but experienced ones. The aggressive drivers.

TireSwing · 18/05/2018 10:30
  1. Tailgating
  2. Not using indicators
  3. Hogging the middle lane
littleemma1 · 18/05/2018 10:39

@Oysterbabe those are the people we’re meaning about 🙄 surely you can see that?!
@sundowners you’re in the small 10% then!
