Influencer ethics on Instagram 2

It appears we haven't quite finished workshopping the ethical issues of 'influencing' on Instagram: disclose of advertising, the exploitation of minors and the similarities to MLM schemes.

Random, that's probably because you are not a dick and neither are your friends or family. Either their friends are or they've been binned off by anyone sane. I have noticed not many do feature friends on their feeds (unless they're insta 'friends' at events).

I was pretty shock at SV's 'if you mess with Candice I will cut you' story!

She's all class isn't she?

Pathetic thug.

jamoncrumpets · 18/05/2018 16:11

I pay v little heed to SV's feed. She's very good at making vicious comments with little or no justification, then moving on and never mentioning things again. In a way, I respect the superficiality of this tactic - it distances her from the bullshit. But it's just not to my taste.

NeverWas · 18/05/2018 16:12

Also allusedup & eeby it is anonymous on MN.

EatMyShoes · 18/05/2018 16:16

I had a look at Candice's stories and I also found it very upsetting to watch. I'm glad she clarified it was just one message out of hundreds of supportive ones, because she was quite vague in her crying video and it did give the impression she was receiving a barrage of abuse, which doesn't appear to be the case. And I am glad that that is the case, and I hope she can see some perspective about it, shocking though a nasty DM must be to receive (another reason why I could never do that job myself).

SV's story though Shock. I wonder what Gleam would think about their client threatening violence against people. I can't think that's the kind of look they are going for. Really really shocked to see that. Maybe I lead a sheltered life.

NeverWas · 18/05/2018 16:20

Eatmyshoes Grin I think you are maybe a bit.

Asgoodasarest · 18/05/2018 16:21

I just wanted to throw in that these threads have been very beneficial to me personally. I got interested because of my work background and followed some of the names. I’ve found the arguments on the whole very thought provoking.

The main points have been made very eloquently already, but for me it’s really changed how I think and feel about Instagram and social media generally. I think it will be good for me in the long run to have taken a step back and have a rethink about who and what gets my eyes, ears and time.

I’ve enjoyed following the debate and having my eyes opened to points I’d never have considered.

I guess I say this because there are benefits to debating such issues that could easily be overlooked. I doubt I’m the only lurker who is now thinking about these points and applying them to myself. My social media use and consumption will hopefully be healthier for it.

I should add in the spirit of fair play that I’ve made critical comments on IG in the context of these threads and those comments are still there and were interacted with politely, so it’s not always impossible to have an opposing point of view.

I know people were looking for ideas on who to follow. I personally love reading so follow lots of authors, publishers and book clubs. Always lots of ideas for what to read next, interesting insight into the ideas behind the books, creative writing advice etc. Plus I like museum accounts too as you get a peek at upcoming exhibitions and the like.

SpringSprangSprung · 18/05/2018 16:25

Oohhh @Asgoodasarest - can you recommend a good book group one. One where they have proper reviews and conversations. Thanks.

EatMyShoes · 18/05/2018 16:35

I do lead a sheltered life? @NeverWas ? I'm glad to if that's the case. I've never heard anyone say that anything like that before. I'd like to see Candice to pull her up on it actually. I wonder if she will.

Asgoodasarest · 18/05/2018 16:41

I follow betweentwobooks (the Florence and the machine book club), the reese Witherspoon one and poppy loves book club. I also follow good reads. I don’t do much with these beyond following up on books I like the sound of though. Might be worth a look to see if any of it is your cup of tea. Tends to be a good mixture of titles from what I’ve seen so far.

TheLadyhasarrived · 18/05/2018 16:43

EatMyShoes I must lead a sheltered life too, I was shocked at SV saying that.
I don’t see how that is not damaging to her brand either, as well as being just a horrible way to behave anyway.

SpringSprangSprung · 18/05/2018 16:45

Thanks.

NeverWas · 18/05/2018 16:45

Sorry Eat and TheLady I thought she was just being silly.

boomboom12 · 18/05/2018 16:51

That is such a crass thing to say particularly in light of the link between the rise in stabbings & social media. I’m sure it was a joke but crass none the less.

Boredandtired · 18/05/2018 16:53

Authors-books I recently started following Clover Stroud who I quite like. Quite new to her though.

NeverWas · 18/05/2018 16:53

Yes boomboom it's not a wise thing to say. I just wasn't 'shocked' by it. I'm sure she'll apologise soon.

EatMyShoes · 18/05/2018 16:53

I agree, @boomboom12 and with the increase in knife crime in London, I think it is irresponsible to normalise talking about 'cutting' people. Even if it was a joke. (it wasn't funny, btw)

EatMyShoes · 18/05/2018 16:54

I was shocked that she had the lack of self-awareness that she would think saying something like that to thousands of people was ok.

NeverWas · 18/05/2018 17:01

Um earlier SV referred to a girlfriend on the side being a 'slam piece'. That didn't offend anyone? That's how she talks. Has no-one noticed before?

boomboom12 · 18/05/2018 17:01

I’m sure it was just off the cuff (I don’t know anything about SV) but defo inappropriate.

jamoncrumpets · 18/05/2018 17:02

It's easy to say you'll cut someone as a joke when you live in a white middle class bubble outside the M25. It becomes a bit less funny when a poor kid is stabbed to death in a car park less than 100 feet from your house. Or shot at outside your local Tesco. You just tend to check yourself before you joke about stuff like that.

But maybe SV realises exactly the reaction that such a comment will get and just gives zero fucks about it.

NeverWas · 18/05/2018 17:06

SV is from Dover. She's not middle class or privileged.

boomboom12 · 18/05/2018 17:06

Indeed jamon

Boredandtired · 18/05/2018 17:08

I don't follow SV because whilst occasionally she's funny, she's pretty rough round the edges. I don't mind that as such, but it's like she tries to come across as something she's not. She also doesn't seem to answer to anything she's called out on.
A close family member of mine was stabbed last year and I find that sort of comment and reference just vile. The more it's jokes about and referenced the more it's part of normal language. These kids were always 'I'll dip you, I'll cut you up' and I never for a minute thought there was any truth to it. But many youths carry knives.
I don't want to give SV any traffic or extra money for being thoughtless and off the mark.
