Pyjamas In Hotels

There was a thread recently discussing people wearing pjs in public. We just got back to our hotel and the lift stopped at the floor with the bar, the doors opened and a woman got in wearing pyjamas and slippers and carrying a bottle of wine. She seemed a bit surprised to see us in the lift and we all got off at the same floor. I wouldn’t be brave enough to go to the bar in a hotel dressed like that, but I had to admire her chutzpah. Aibu to think folk should at least throw on some clothes before appearing in public?

speakout I can't even tell if you're being deliberately obtuse or not.

It's obviously possible (and normal) to care about the impression you create at a funeral or a parents evening and to not care about the impression you create on strangers while popping to the shop or a hotel bar.

There's also an obvious difference in the formality of those scenarios.

I think it's horrible and just lazy as is wearing pyjamas anywhere in public (apart from hospital obviously) I was in a rather posh hotel last week and someone came down to breakfast with bare feet. I thought that was horrible too. Slippers were provided in the hotel so if she had a massive blister or something she could have worn them. Saw her checking out later wearing shoes.

Ginandplatonic · 12/05/2018 12:00

Making assumptions based on how someone looks in a minutes snapshot is just lazy thinking

As opposed to denigrating people as narrow minded fools and pearl clutchers (the ultimate in lazy go-to insults on here) because they hold an opinion which differs from yours?

Everyone makes judgements about other people based on what they observe all the time. Including you if you are honest. You may not express them, but everyone does it.

Lana If you were lairy as in loud AT BREAKFAST no wonder you were stared at! Dont think its your haircut.

ForalltheSaints · 12/05/2018 12:06

The OP is not being unreasonable. Except for hospitals of course.

Moritz · 12/05/2018 12:06

Deciding not to shave or having an unusual style isnt the same as wearing your pj to get some booze.

Realistica · 12/05/2018 12:17

Deciding not to shave or having an unusual style isnt the same as wearing your pj to get some booze.

Well, it is the same in that it affects nobody in any way whatsoever.

LanaKanesTerfyVagina · 12/05/2018 12:25

Not loud ffs.
Lairy as in lairy looking.

I'm only loud at punk gigs and festivals.

Perfectly capable of being sensible when I want.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 12/05/2018 12:43

I think we need to know whether or not the pyjamas were ironed.

Tessliketrees · 12/05/2018 13:23

I like threads like this.

In the past when I used to go to the shops or (back when DCs were little) I did the school run in my jamas it was purely for convenience.

Now I have the added bonus of knowing I am causing all sorts of seething discomfort for people who deserve it.

Keep up the good work!

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/05/2018 13:45

A few of you have said she is your hero. What is heroic about it?

It's silly "ooh look at me , what am I like? I'm such a non- confirmist" behaviour.

Tessliketrees · 12/05/2018 14:04

Calling somebody your hero is a common turn of phrase.

The speaker rarely means somebody has actually carried out a heroic action in the dictionary definition sense.

Hope that helps but if not have a Google.

southeastdweller · 12/05/2018 14:19

Why would you want to look up to someone who’s a lazy slob? What good is the person wearing pyjamas doing?

infertilitybitch · 12/05/2018 15:12

I'm not doing any good deed by wearing my pjs to others

I am feeling comfortable and relaxed enough not to care what others are thinking. My good deed is only to myself.

Sparklesocks · 12/05/2018 15:17

Fair play to her, seems like she was enjoying her stay!

I’m a big fan of letting people get on with their lives if it isn’t hurting anyone, especially if it’s not impacting on me in any way.

It’s weird some people in this thread get so worked up about what other people wear. 😒

OuaisMaisBon · 12/05/2018 16:29

Lolita, I'm afraid to imagine what it says about my life that this didn't even occur to me: They just get in the way of good hot spontaneous sex ouais Grin

Oh aren't you the clever one. I tend to use it for someone who has done something praiseworthy, can be very minor , no need for battlefield heroics. Not being able to get dressed doesn’t cut it.

Haisuli · 12/05/2018 16:44

It's gross.

BankHolidayYAS · 12/05/2018 18:24

In a hotel, meh fine

Out at the shops etc, no way in hell

Tessliketrees · 12/05/2018 18:49

Not being able to get dressed doesn’t cut it

I hope you mean choosing not to, being so needlessly bitchy about those that aren't able is more than a bit shitty.

SmileEachDay · 12/05/2018 19:08

I wonder if a dapper older gentleman in stripy pajamas, with leather slippers, a well groomed ex army moustache and a crisply folded copy of the Times under his arm, sauntering down for brekkers would be judged in the same way?

gamerwidow · 12/05/2018 19:14

Pyjamas outside is only acceptable if you are ill and you have been taken to hospital or if you have popped outside to take the bins out/get the milk in. Any other time is unacceptable.

gamerwidow · 12/05/2018 19:19

fwiw I've spent the day in hospital with DD she was in PJs because very ill I was dressed because no matter how much everyone says 'PJs are just comfortable and its a non-issue' I suspect health care officials would swiftly judge me if I turned up in PJs too.

Tessliketrees · 12/05/2018 19:54

@gamerwidow

What's a healthcare official?

CoolCarrie · 12/05/2018 20:16

DH & I walked the dogs up to our local shops just now, and there were 2 men and a woman, the woman and one of the guys were in their pjs and dressing gowns getting their shopping. I have never seen anything like that before, although I have seen children in onesies. It was very odd!
