people.com/style/met-gala-2018-critics-call-catholic-theme-blasphemous/
I'm certain that if it was any other religion there'd be uproar.

fact that it was in the Sudan is irrelevant.

No, the fact it was in Sudan is the only relevant thing about it. No other predominately Muslim country would have cared. Sudan is worn torn, poor and illteriate.

raisedbyguineapigs · 10/05/2018 19:54

I think it's more offensive that the Vatican approved and lent items to this desperado fest masquerading as a charity gala. As if Kim Kardashian and Rhianna turn up to this to raise money for charity. I'd like to know how much money is given to good causes from the astronomical ticket prices paid by celebs to get their faces in the papers. Even if it went to the Met to get works of art or to promote young artists that would be something, but I bet most of the money doesn't!

TheHulksPurplePanties · 10/05/2018 20:00

Rhiannas fashion shoot, she wasn't dressed indecently, i fail to see why it's relevant.

If you want to be technical, photos are discouraged inside mosques. Everyone else who goes to sheikh zayed mosque, male or female, must waer a robe and cover their head. She's wearing a pants suit. She's obviously posing for a photo shoot.

I've no issues, neither do the uae authorities.

The mosque, her photo shoot, Catholicism, the met ball, its not about insulting a religion, it's about appreciating the aesthetic.

biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 20:01

So do you agree with the punishment? Is stoning what you think should happen to Rihanna?
How can you miss the point i was making, it was quite clear. Why on earth would i agree with the punishment Confused
It was comparing what happened to the teacher in Sudan. This was in answer to someone who said that different religions have different codes of what is deemed offensive. I mentioned the teacher to show that mocking on a big scale would not be allowed considering what happened to the teacher. Do read the post.

Just sounds like you would like harsh responses to blasphemy and ridicule of Catholicism.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 10/05/2018 20:08

But that was comparing rural Sudan to London, not rural Sudan to Tennessee. Those are a bit closer in comparison.

biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 20:10

Anyway i'm going, too many wind up merchants i'm afraid. Fwiw i think the whole thing was disgusting, blasphemous and insulting to catholics who don't wish to see the iconography of their faith depicted by talentless "celebrities" known more for their practically pornographic dance wear/moves than any noticable talent that they might have.

And hulk please don't imply that muslim countries wouldn't care about any perceived "insult" to their religion. They would care very very much, to say otherwise makes you sound a bit ridiculous.

raised The Gala is the main source of fundraising for the Costume Institute to allow it to put on exhibitions, acquisitions, capital costs etc.

TomDonaldson · 10/05/2018 20:12

I'm not a wind up merchant, I just asked a question.

PippiLongstromp · 10/05/2018 20:12

I think from a Christian perspective (this is not just about Catholicism), the idea that the most rich, powerful and shallow people in the world are posing in imagery from the bible (did someone actually wear the nativity scene on their head?) is indeed a demonic attempt to minimise, trivialise, and yes ridicule God and his word. Luckily God is not that upset about it - in fact this is what Jesus told us to expect from the world and the people who do not know him. Jesus himself was ridiculed and mocked to his death. There is no surprise and no point in trying to get the world to "behave" or show respect! Rest assured that things are progressing as they need to on this Earth.

But if you don't believe in God, there is obviously nothing to discuss, it's just imagery.

myrtleWilson · 10/05/2018 20:14

biscuit - seeing as Cardinal Dolan (who attended the event) was joking that Rhianna had agreed to do some confirmations in exchange for him lending her a mitre, it suggests that your view is not shared by at least some senior Catholics. I imagine the exhibition Heavenly Bodies is quite fascinating and beautiful including the vestments from the Vatican. I'd love to attend and see.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 10/05/2018 20:16

I'm sorry, did I not fit in with your islamist agenda?

myrtleWilson · 10/05/2018 20:18

(I know he didn't lend her a mitre but the fact he was joking about it suggests he was comfortable with the event)

TomDonaldson · 10/05/2018 20:19

Ooh Pippi, do tell. When does the judgement begin?

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 10/05/2018 20:21

Fwiw i think the whole thing was disgusting, blasphemous and insulting to catholics who don't wish to see the iconography

And some people don't think that

Thats the whole point of aibu isnt it

Just cos people dont agree with you doesnt mean they are wind up merchants

daffodildelight · 10/05/2018 20:23

I think it's a shame that nowadays people think it's fine to mock and ridicule others. It's a sad state of affairs. Love your neighbour as you love yourself and the world would be a much nicer place to live in.

myrtleWilson · 10/05/2018 20:38

Out of interest from those who think the event is ridiculing or mocking - is that view held because the event took place, or is it held because of some of the outfits some of the attendees wore?

So for example, I thought Gigi Hadid's "stained glass window" dress was beautiful and reflected (no pun intended Grin the delicate beauty of stained glass in religious buildings.

Similarly Zendaya's nod to Joan of Arc I thought was stunning and referenced a strong, intelligent female (her answer in the trial re God's Grace demonstrating her ability to outwit better educated people than her). Do those who feel the Gala was mocking think that referencing JoA at all was in some way blasphemous.

Or is it some of the more outré outfits that caused offence (some for the particular interpretation of the theme, and perhaps for some for the lack of reference to the theme). If it is the Rhianna's and Cardi B's of the world that were causing offence surely that was expected - her 2015 outfit (China: Through the Looking Glass) and 2017 (Rei Kawakubo) were hardly demonstrations of restraint!

ICantCopeAnymore · 10/05/2018 20:41

Catholisism is ridiculed because it's ridiculous.

TheClitterati · 10/05/2018 20:44

It's about catholic influence on dressing and fashion. I've got catholic friends in Spain and Italy all over FB loving it.

I think it's quite fab myself though I'm
Not really one for religion.

TheClitterati · 10/05/2018 20:46

Fwiw i think the whole thing was disgusting, blasphemous and insulting to catholics who don't wish to see the iconography

The Pope disagrees with you tho.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/05/2018 20:48

I have a feeling that if these costumes and the use of imagery in them offend you you’re propbably not catholic.

I wouldn’t have thought many of the costumes could hold a candle to some of the iconography that already exists.

myfriendbob · 10/05/2018 20:49

Fwiw i think the whole thing was disgusting, blasphemous and insulting to catholics who don't wish to see the iconography

Well their leader said it was all grand and since he's infallible and shit, those catholics want to sort themselves out and get on board!

AlfredDaButtler · 10/05/2018 20:52

I have to ask - are you Catholic yourself, or taking offence on behalf of Catholics (who if the Catholics I know, including myself and allllll my family, are anything to go by, there really is no need to be offended)

ReanimatedSGB · 10/05/2018 21:02

All religions should be insulted and mocked far more than they are, and the people who respond to the insult and mockery with violence should be prosecuted. Fuck your imaginary friend and your idiot superstition, whatever flavour. They are all myths intended to promote social control and the oppression of women by men.

BartholinsSister · 10/05/2018 21:16

Rather than get your knickers in a twist about it, you could forgive them.
