people.com/style/met-gala-2018-critics-call-catholic-theme-blasphemous/
I'm certain that if it was any other religion there'd be uproar.

How depressing that anyone thinks 'sacrilege' and 'blasphemy' are meaningful concepts in this day and age. You might as well accuse people of being witches.

RebelRogue · 10/05/2018 17:44

I'm still waiting for an explanation about the demonic thing.

specialsubject · 10/05/2018 17:48

it is perfectly ok to mock beliefs, just not people.

a few thickly made up celebs waddling in heels down a catwalk is a joke.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 10/05/2018 17:53

On the scale of things which are actually evil, I don't think this even merits a mention. If the Pope can't be bothered to get his hair in a curl about it, then I'm guessing it's probably fine.

Of course there's such a thing as blasphemy in this day and age. I can't imagine any other religion tolerating celebs prancing around in vestments peculiar to THEIR religion. But further than that, it just wouldn't happen. They wouldn't dare, because of the fear of a huge backlash. Why is it seen as only acceptable to mock Catholicism, and no doubt that is what it is, mockery.

If they wanted a religious theme it would be surely more appropriate to have a mixture of garments from many different religions. (why not) I'm amazed that the vatican didn't object to such an irreverent display of mockery.

We should be able to mock all religions without any recourse

Amanduh · 10/05/2018 19:06

People went absolutely ballistic when people dressed up in Sheik fancy dress costumes for parties.
I agree OP.
Kylie Jenner parading around in a bra isn’t art either. Just because it’s in the name of the Met doesn’t make Jason Derulo posing for paps art.

Petitepamplemousse · 10/05/2018 19:07

Catholicism has always been about the aesthetic. It’s very different to a religion like Islam where images of the prophet are forbidden. It’s not the same level of disrespect and a false comparison.

biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 19:08

Well at least it would be fair then lethal, maybe they see Christianity as more tolerant? no excuse though. Many people take their religion seriously and should have the right to do so without fear of ridicule etc. There's no excuse for it. Like i said other religions wouldn't tolerate it.

The Vatican approved. As a Catholic I see no issues, the extravegance of the Catholic faith is well known, and the current pope is not willing to down play it. Honestly, I think this is a marvelous step forward in modernizing the church by embracing it's past silliness.

Saucery · 10/05/2018 19:17

Catholicism has broad enough shoulders to carry a few slebs dressed in weird costumes.

I agree, all religions differ in what is considered blasphemous. But to give it context, compare the case to the teacher of 6 year olds in the Sudan. She was arrested, tried and imprisoned for calling the class teddy "Muhammad"....Hmm

No, no one goes ballistic. I've lived in the middle East for over a decade and never seen anyone get upset over a non Muslim dressing in khandoura or abaya. In fact it's welcomed.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 10/05/2018 19:26

" She was arrested, tried and imprisoned for calling the class teddy "Muhammad"....hmm."

Yet Rhianna did a fashion shoot at sheikh zayed mosque dressed in what was basically a cat suit, no one cared.

TomPinch · 10/05/2018 19:26

It's acceptable to mock any Christian variety of belief, not just Christianity.

Mocking other religions (or expressing opposition to officially-sanctioned secular beliefs) may get you in trouble with the authorities, and in the case of Islam, also a visit from some bearded heavies.

biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 19:27

hulks not a comparison, non muslims dressing in those clothes wouldn't have been done for the same reasons, rather practicalities i would have thought.

OP posts:
biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 19:30

Well why would they have cared hulk, she wasn't ridiculing their clothes, but what is the connection with the class teddy?, people very much cared about that.

OP posts:
DailyMailReadersAreThick · 10/05/2018 19:31

Because Catholicism is ridiculous.

Of course they do. We do so every national day. We do so for fun. We do so cause we want to.

No she was doing a fashion shoot in a mosque. A very important mosque. Woulddo it in St. Paul's cathedral? Or nortre dome wearing a sexy version of a nuns habit?

The Class Teddy is from rural Sudan. Comparing it to all of Islam is like comparing David koresh to the pope.

biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 19:42

Because Catholicism is ridiculous, but then many people think Islam is ridiculous, that doesn't give the right to insult though does it. Would you dare call another religion "ridiculous" or is it that you feel safe with that one.

OP posts:
biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 19:48

The class teddy is one example. The fact that it was in the Sudan is irrelevant. It would have been offensive in any muslim country, they have considerably less tolerance than most other religions.

Apart fro

biscuitraider · 10/05/2018 19:49

Posted too soon.
Apart from that, i don't see what was wrong with Rhiannas fashion shoot, she wasn't dressed indecently, i fail to see why it's relevant.

Seriously, this thread is for real? The event pays homage to a different fashion influencer each year and this year they wanted to pay it to the influence that Catholicism has had on art and fashion in past decades/centuries.
I am catholic and I did not see any issue with this choice of theme, nor any of the outfits (well some did offend me but that's because they were just simply ugly outfits).

Oh and the person that said Rihanna wore an outfit that could be considered quite demonic; her outfit was literally designed to look very pope like, how on Earth is that demonic? Hmm

TomDonaldson · 10/05/2018 19:50

So do you agree with the punishment? Is stoning what you think should happen to Rihanna?
