people.com/style/met-gala-2018-critics-call-catholic-theme-blasphemous/
I'm certain that if it was any other religion there'd be uproar.

It is being held in an art gallery by the art gallery to fundraise for the costume gallery. So it is both about art and about costume.

crunchymint · 10/05/2018 14:19

I think there should be more ridiculing of all religions.

TaytoAllDay · 10/05/2018 14:20

Fashion is art.

And Catholicism has always been associated with art.

Met Gala is done by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, hence why it's so extravagant and themed each year.

I'm catholic and I didn't have an issue with it, felt quite happy that it was expressed and used as something so positive for such a massive event. It's quite a good promo stint for the Catholic Church to be honest as it brings attention back to it. I'm not religious at all, but it's a good marketing strategy. Bringing awareness the Catholicism and fashion again.

Sure, we've all dressed up on Halloween before haven't we? And know people that have? As angels, priests, nuns, demons etc. It's the same concept it's just the rich & famous doing it for an art event.

Tell me more about Britney's demon powers, I'm agog

TaytoAllDay · 10/05/2018 14:22

God that was long!

But, I understand what you're saying about how other religions wouldn't be used this way. Then again, I guess, Catholicism is more open to using art and fashion than other religions. Just differs and it depends on the conservativeness relating to certain things in each religion.

Pretty interesting debate!

Gottagetmoving · 10/05/2018 14:24

I don't think ridicule was the intention but most religions get ridiculed by comedians and satirists. People get offended too easily.

thetriangleisarealinstrument · 10/05/2018 14:26

I was most dissappointed by Katy Perrys outfit tbh.... 100s of years of intense Catholic imagery and shes gone as a cutesy angel....... okay then. Really 'fancy dress' and boring.
Reminds me of those girls who always dress as a sexy fairy to any costumed event they ever attend.

Loved Janelle Monae and Alicia Vickanders looks... subtle but interesting

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 10/05/2018 14:35

The Pope gave his approval?! Seriously?

AlfredDaButtler · 10/05/2018 14:38

The Met Gala is a social outing, yes. The lengths that designers go to every year to come up with an outfit as an artistic expression of that years theme are amazing.

I'm Catholic - I don't see it as offensive. I don't think many (if any) garden variety Catholics would find it offensive either.

myfriendbob · 10/05/2018 14:40

Is it intentional woeful misrepresentation day on MN or what?

Don't comment when you haven;t understood, you look very stupid.

MightyMucks · 10/05/2018 14:40

Yes greyhound, the Vatican even leant them clothes as exhibits.

TheCriminalMind · 10/05/2018 14:41

I’m not actually too sure what the Met Gala is about...and I can say I was quite surprised about some of the outfits but can I just say Blake Lively looked beautiful (and I loved her dress) 😍

JassyRadlett · 10/05/2018 14:44

Is it intentional woeful misrepresentation day on MN or what?

Every day is intentional woeful misrepresentation day on MN. Grin

MightyMucks · 10/05/2018 14:45

criminal, it’s in the Met Museum in NY and raises money for their costume institute. Their spring exhibition is on the Catholic influence on fashion, it’s all properly historically researched and in context.

As another poster said above, there are many, many other exhibitions which have explored Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu etc, etc influences on fashion, art, architecture in the same way and it’s a totally valid theme.

Not so much ridicule as homage.

Helendee · 10/05/2018 14:45

I'm pretty sure this Pope is as more of an atheist than a Catholic!

TheCriminalMind · 10/05/2018 14:49

MightyMucks Thank you!
I honestly thought some of the outfits were beautiful and if it highlights the influence of important factors (Religion, History, Art, etc) then I think it’s a good thing Smile

kateandme · 10/05/2018 14:53

i think it was the kind of "celeb attenders" that would take the mic though.i think most tried to respect it and give meaning to their outfits.
hearing a few reasons they gave about the research of their outfits I thought it went a bit more acceptable

ReanimatedSGB · 10/05/2018 14:56

While I agree with PP that there should be a lot more ridiculing of superstition in all its forms, because it is toxic bullshit, this event doesn't seem to have been intended as satire. Unfortunately.

SchrodingersCatepillar · 10/05/2018 15:32

Because it is ridiculous, as are all other religions.

jedediah · 10/05/2018 15:44

If you want culture that respects Catholicism, try watching the Pope Song by Tim Minchin Smile

pigmcpigface · 10/05/2018 15:47

Oh, someone's been reading Piers Morgan.

I don't think the outfits were ridiculing Catholicism so much as drawing inspiration from it. Some of them may have bordered on the sacrilegious, but others were absolutely stunning creation.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2018 15:48

This can't be an excuse to mock religion.

No excuse is required to mock religions. Or anyone who bandies about a superstitious term such as 'demonic', come to that.

hanahsaunt · 10/05/2018 15:58

Practising Christian here and I thought it was absolutely fabulous! No offence taken. Only Hmm moment was SJP's nativity hat but still thinking it through.

Trinity66 · 10/05/2018 16:02

Or anyone who bandies about a superstitious term such as 'demonic'

although what some Catholic priests did to children and other priests and Bishops did by covering for those monsters could be described as demonic I guess. Also, those poor women in the Magdelane laundries and similar

NotACleverName · 10/05/2018 16:10

Re Piers Morgan: imagine being so much of a self-important blowhard that you feel the need to explain Catholicism to the actual Pope.
