Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

@Creambun2

Yes actually, would you like to see my COC?

MiddleClassProblem · 08/05/2018 09:33

Now there’s an offer

Blobby10 · 08/05/2018 09:34

Happened to me once with one of my dogs OP - I was mortified but like you could do little about it. I did try my best to fish the poo out of the sea with the poo bags but the majority of it had broken up and disappeared. Never happened again though as I learned my lesson and dog was not allowed near the sea until she had done what she needed to do and i had picked it up!

I guess in a way allowing it to break down naturally and disperse was more environmentally friendly than putting it in yet another plastic bag then binning it to go to landfill but still pretty gross.

@Creambun2

As per the revised annex iv

The discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited, except when the ship has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant or when the ship is discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage using an approved system at a distance of more than three nautical miles from the nearest land. Sewage which is not comminuted or disinfected may be discharged at a distance of more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land, and the rate of discharge of untreated sewage shall be approved by the Administration (see resolution MEPC.157(55))

Which I think you will find also doesn't apply to ships

Mathanxiety, you are reading way too much into a single word. Also, if a dog wants to poo, you probably wouldn't be able to stop it, even if you were right beside it. Lastly, dogs have better hearing than humans, and a whistle carries well over the sound of waves.

@MiddleClassProblem

It's not all that impressive haha. It took a few years to cultivate but I'm proud of it Grin

Wisdens · 08/05/2018 09:42

galumphing

That has to be the word of the day!!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/05/2018 09:47

Fucks sake - I'm more concerned about the mountain of plastic in the ocean than a dog shit...

This. Calm down people. Wonder how many of your kids have had a wee or a poo in the sea.

mathanxiety · 08/05/2018 09:49

Words mean only what the writer believes they mean and to heck with dictionaries?

If the dog can hear above the waves and at a considerable distance then the OP should whistle, and prevent it from running so far from her.

The problem isn't that the dog pooped. The problem is that he had run too far from the OP to allow her to pick it up.

Plus, if the dog had been attacked by another dog, or if he was jumping up at someone and others were about to manhandle him, she was too far away to intervene and it's possible a whistle would have been ignored in the heat of the moment. The safety of the dog is also at risk when he runs too far off.

RedHelenB · 08/05/2018 09:50

Thats why dogs should be banned from beaches. You could have tried.

Flicketyflack · 08/05/2018 09:55

It sounds like you feel guilty because someone challenged what was bad dog ownership. If he had not have challenged what you know is bad behaviour you would have left it & thought no more about it Sad

It is grim letting a dog poo on a beach, I watched a dog do it the other day except his owner picked it up. It was right by some trampolines being set up on the beach for some kids.

IMO dogs should not be allowed on beaches for this reason but thats another thread Confused

MarthasGinYard · 08/05/2018 09:59

Yes Op should have at least attempted to clean up.

Actually Agree entirely with Math

Always a first Wink

FloatyFlo · 08/05/2018 09:59

Some of you are sad cunts who need to get a fucking grip.

biscuitraider · 08/05/2018 10:09

People get so hysterical about dogs. The amount of people who stop and stare when my female dog has a wee (because it looks like she's pooing) is ridiculous. I've had to say, "that's how bitches wee" on more than one occasion. Probably think i should carry a bucket of water and a scrubbing brush no doubt. Hmm

Probably because of the dog shit they steer round/step in so often. I'm a dog owner and I do a double take when bitches crouch, as do the owners, as they check too. It's not always clear that a bitch is bitch. My dog is very furry and is often taken for a bitch, so really, relax, biscuit

My kids and I have been swimming in the sea all weekend. I would have been upset if this had happened right next to us. I don't mind dogs on some beaches, it's great for them but we keep our dogs close until they've done their crap, so we can pick it up.
I saw a woman doing a litter pick this weekend. She had two dogs with her - she was paying too much attention to picking up plastic to see one dog do a massive shit in the middle of the beach. Luckily the other dog came along and ate it all up shortly afterwards, she never even noticed.
I like seeing dogs on beaches, it's when they're not under control it makes me angry.

ittakes2 · 08/05/2018 10:37

To me it depends if people go swimming at that beach. Swimming into floating dog poo is not fun!

SuburbanRhonda · 08/05/2018 10:42

Seriously? You think parents let their children shit in the sea? I can’t believe anyone would be that disgusting.

biscuitraider · 08/05/2018 10:48

I am relaxed echt, i am also very aware myself of anyone who doesn't pick up, it's just that i don't glare at everyone so noticeably when their dogs having a pee. It's those people that should relax. I've had to give out poo bags a few times when i've noticed someone not picking up though.....people who have actually come out with their dog/dogs with no means to pick up after them. Angry

But , the majority of dog walkers are responsible. Lets not treat them all like social outcasts just because they have a dog.

MiddleClassProblem · 08/05/2018 10:53

SuburbanRhonda it definitely happens but I’m 100% schooled that you don’t realise kids (and some grown ups) pee in the sea. Are that naive about swimming pools too?

Loopyloopy · 08/05/2018 10:58

Math, the dog pooed in the sea. If she'd been right next to it, I suspect that she still might not be able to get it. And "distance" dosen't mean the dog was over the horizon. Active dogs need more exercise than they can possibly get if they are kept right at the human's side all the time. This is essential for the dog's physical and mental health. To achieve this, responsible owners take their dogs to places where it is considered acceptsble to let their dogs run about. LIKE THE LOCAL DOG BEACH.

biscuitraider · 08/05/2018 10:59

I can totally believe some parents have let their kids poo in the sea. I've seen them allow them in much worse places.

nellieellie · 08/05/2018 11:04

I am a dog owner. If your dog wanders off far enough off lead for this to happen I think you need to keep your dog on lead. I would definitely have waded in looking. I would have felt absolutely mortified. It’s pretty disgusting to have dog poo floating about on a beach. Next time, lesson learnt, dog on lead until he’s pooped.

ThymeLord · 08/05/2018 11:11

It's people who need banning from beaches, not dogs. We were at the beach over the weekend, dogs are banned now until the end of September. The beach was absolutely littered with rubbish, dirty nappies, cans, food wrappers, disposable BBQs, fag ends, etc etc. It's humans who are the filthy disgusting ones ruining our planet, not a bloody dog having a shit.

SamHeughansLeftEyebrow · 08/05/2018 11:19

Exactly Timelord. Dogs are not the problem here. You only have to go to any beach, park or other public open space at the end of a nice day to see the rubbish left by humans.

Yes, people should clean up their dog mess. But, they should also clean up after themselves. A poo in the edge of the sea is going to be washed away within a couple of waves going over it. It will provide nutrition for crabs and other bottom dwelling sea life. Plastic, on the other hand, kills.
