Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

2Sailors - so all currents are the same? No matter where you are in sea or ocean, once in the water an item will float off out of sight in seconds?

What exactly do you think ships do with sewage? And gray water? We can legally dump it at sea untreated if we have full tanks. Now imagine the thousands of ships that are around the UK every single night dumping all that lovely stuff?
Right by the shore? So it's washing back and forth in the waves and contaminating the areas where small children paddle? Or a little further out?

mathanxiety · 08/05/2018 05:55

How do you know my dog was out of control?

Clue:
she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

The word 'distance' there gives it away. Plus even though you hurried you were too late to get to the turd.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea
It's hard to be heard on most beaches. There is almost always a breeze, and the waves make a lot of background noise. If your dog gets into the water to swim it is even harder for him to hear you.

So out of your control.

Charolais - do the sharks poop at the shore?

TireSwing · 08/05/2018 06:01

LOLing at the idea that you would to let a springer off the lead on the beach/in the woods/in a field and expect it to walk to heel.

As long as you were on a dog friendly beach then YWNBU. It's pretty gross but like a PP said, the sea is self cleaning!

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 08/05/2018 06:04

If it was washed away there isnt much you could do. I say this as someone who always challenges those who walk away from there dog shit on the street

mathanxiety · 08/05/2018 06:06

as soon as she gets on the beach all she wants to do is run, it's in her nature. She will only focus on running and getting all of her energy out.

Does she return to you if you call? Or do you have to wait for her to wear herself out before she pays attention?

Wisdens · 08/05/2018 06:10

Nothing vexes MN like a dog turd!

RhurbabAndCustard · 08/05/2018 06:14

Where we live the beach with lifeguards on is also the beach where dogs are allowed............:-(

Creambun2 · 08/05/2018 06:26

@2sailors1babycoming

Are you actually a qualified deck officer as you seem to know fuck all about marpol with your posts?

mellongoose · 08/05/2018 07:05

This thread is hilarious 😂

@greenteaplease fellow springer owner here. I was also challenged by a man on a beach because I couldn't (literally) get to the poo. My dog has awesome recall but he can also climb to places I can't! It was over on some rocks and I had a toddler with me. Beach was deserted except for us and this man.

He really upset me. The tide was coming in so in hindsight I shouldn't have let him get to me. I shouted back at him and only cried about it when I got home.

And YES I would love to ban humans from beaches because of the rubbish they leave behind. A better suggestion might be that people are not allowed to eat on the beach. No eating, no leaving behind of wrappers etc. I do beach cleans on a regular basis.

Please don't sweat it, OP. I know that most of the inshore fleet of fishermen use a bucket when they need to go. Poo breaks down, plastic does not.

sandgrown · 08/05/2018 07:23

Dogs are only allowed on a small section of our beaches in the Summer . I have noticed some owners do not bother to pick up on the doggy section even in places where the tides only reach a couple of times a year ! The council have not helped though by removing the bins that were actually situated on the beach.

GreedyVegan · 08/05/2018 07:30

We only visit beaches with a dog ban in summer, in the whole of Pembrokeshire I can think of just 3 beaches that have this in place (one is a half ban and the beach is grim). People still come on with dogs and I end up being shouted at if I point it out.

K9Time · 08/05/2018 07:32

Oh OP! I was thinking this would be YADDDDDBU but actually I find myself thinking YANBU. MN has a really bizarre attitude to dogs. Of course we should all pick up our dogs poo. But dogs don’t need to be on a lead or by our side the whole time. Abso-effing-lutely nuts.

Mrskray · 08/05/2018 07:39

To the PP asking about keeping them on a lead til they go, I had a dog who just wasn't regular at all so this would mean potentially a whole day on the lead.

Well yes, that is what it would mean!

Wisdens · 08/05/2018 08:07

Horses shit everywhere, cats shit everywhere and don’t mention the wildlife that has the temerity to loosen their bowels at any given opportunity.

A dog drops a turd somewhere inaccessible and all hell breaks loose!

NewPapaGuinea · 08/05/2018 08:15

There could have been a “Kevin and Perry” moment leaving that poo in the sea. Seriously though, it’s a dog poo in the sea. Nothing to get worked up about.

WineAndTiramisu · 08/05/2018 08:21

For all the people saying she should keep the dog on a lead until it's done it's business, my dogs are airways on the lead (crap recall), and I've still had the same issue, it's being washed away as they're doing it!

I think there's been a bit of an over reaction on here, especially given that it's one dog poo in a vast ocean!

Barbie222 · 08/05/2018 08:29

Nothing you could have done, but you could say the same for dog wee too, which smells really bad in the heat.

HoldingTheLineWinston · 08/05/2018 08:35

I agree that you shouldn't wade into the sea to retrieve the poo..but it is a bit grim to allow your dog to poo or pee on the beach imo. It's a place for people to enjoy, not worry about encountering dog poo.

RLOU88 · 08/05/2018 08:42

We took our dog to the beach yesterday. We did keep him on a lead and walk him round lots before we reached the seafront, just to make sure he done all his poos and wee though.

Appletreecorner · 08/05/2018 08:45

it is a bit grim to allow your dog to poo or pee on the beach

"Not now Rufus. Wait until we get home" 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Bourbon87 · 08/05/2018 08:46

Bump

UrsulaPandress · 08/05/2018 09:00

So much hysteria and quite bizarre attitudes.

LARLARLAND · 08/05/2018 09:01

There is so much bacteria in the sand that dog wee will be very quickly broken down. I can't believe how people are so hysterical about sharing the beach with animals Grin

mathanxiety · 08/05/2018 09:30

Nobody minds sharing the beach with animals that are not off galumphing on their own with nobody controlling them.
