Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

greenteaplease · 07/05/2018 21:39

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

Don't Wales And fish crap in the ocean? So how more disgusting could one dog turd be?

Bashun · 11/05/2018 05:55

@Idrill I don't think a dog turd in the ocean is any worse than a seal turd or a whale turd in the ocean. Besides what about these people that dump their ashes in the ocean from their deceased family members? Who wants to be swimming and get a mouthful of bone chips or Swim through a patch of Muddy ashes? Not me! Lol

Bashun · 11/05/2018 06:31

@Laura0806,are you freaking serious? Please tell us what This blindness causing. Turd disease is called. So, what about the Mercury found in the ocean or the petroleum hydrocarbons floating in the sea? What do you do to protect your sweetness and children from those harmful chemicals when you're at the beach or your sweet innocent children are swimming in the ocean? I call bullshit on your premise that dog crap cause blindness and floating in the ocean

MiddleClassProblem · 11/05/2018 08:31

Sorry, mathanxiety but there are many breeds of those farm animals you have listed that do love in the wild. And if you’ve ever seen the stray dog situation in certain other countries where they are very feral then you would also realise they are the same.

Sure there are plenty that live in domesticity. Many of those would survive and some wouldn’t but the same goes for actual wild animals.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 11/05/2018 09:35

Blindness causing turd disease (!) = Toxoplasmosis.
It's a real thing, actually. Nobody wants any contact with your dog's shit. Especially on a beach where people tend to go barefoot.

Harebellmeadow · 11/05/2018 10:03

Also Toxocariasis.
Rather worrying that dog owners/free pooers have never heard of this. Extremely worrying levels of ignorance actually.
Massive furore in the nineties when public awareness about this was first raised.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxocariasis

Bashun · 11/05/2018 15:35

Imagrayhound, then it's fortunate tide washed it away before someone walked on it. That is unless someone pulls a Jesus and can walk on water.
Still, it doesn't address the other sea animal waste and pollution found in the ocean, for all " ocean is sanitary" crowd.

mathanxiety · 12/05/2018 07:37

Yes they live in the wild, but there would be millions fewer if humans had nothing to do with them.

If zebras were any use to people there would be billions of them. If chickens were not any use to humans there would be billions fewer.

MiddleClassProblem · 12/05/2018 08:31

Zebras are farmed too...

YouStacey · 12/05/2018 08:36

YWNBU and I am not a dog owner or a dog lover.

MiddleClassProblem · 12/05/2018 09:55

Maths I forgot to say that your previous point was that these animals wouldn’t survive without us not that they wouldn’t have such an exaggerated population.

mathanxiety · 12/05/2018 10:17

No - this was my previous point:

Quote: "Animals would survive without humans, humans couldn't survive without animals."

Mathanxiety: Only a fraction of current numbers would survive without humans. Some species would not have a millionth of the numbers they have now. Dogs are one such species. There are many breeds of dog that would simply not exist without people. Hens/chickens, pigs, cows, and other farm animals are another example.

The reference to species of dogs that would not exist doesn't mean they would die out. It means they would never have come into existence if people hadn't bred them.

If zebra farming takes off, then my point will be proven.

MiddleClassProblem · 12/05/2018 12:24

Takes off? I’m assuming you mean to the heights of cattle or such?

Otherwise you’re quite culturally unaware that it has been around quite a long while. I guess it’s more akin to venison though production wise.

Apologies for not reading your previous post fully toddler trouble

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 12/05/2018 14:33

Are zebras farmed for food, MiddleClass? PLEASE say no

MiddleClassProblem · 12/05/2018 14:52

I can say no if I cross my fingers

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 12/05/2018 14:54

Oh... ☹️

MichaelKnightsCar · 12/05/2018 17:36

I haven't RTFT but Eliza9917
"Also, everyone saying how disgusting it is that dog shit went in the sea, where do you think sewerage goes? Plenty of places still have long pipes that dump it all out at sea:

No, it is illegal for that to happen

It's not illegal actually. All sewage companies have several storm overflows that are allowed by law to discharge during rainfall or during prolonged cold weather (when the sewage works can freeze and stop working)
At the coast, the pipes go straight into the sea, inland, they go into rivers (which ends up in the sea anyway)
Google storm overflows and you can see how many there are in the UK.

One dog shit isn't going to make much difference with all the other rubbish and waste that humans pump and throw into the sea on a daily basis.

PositivelyPERF · 12/05/2018 17:47

I’ve actually seen untreated sewage pumped into the sea, near me. It was absolutely revolting, with obvious shit and toilet roll floating from the shore away out into the water. 🤢 I don’t know if it was deliberate or accidental, but it certainly wasn’t pleasant, so a decision dog turd wouldn’t bother me. Different if it’s lying on the sand.

A local council worker told me that any poo below the seaweed line didn’t, by local laws, need to be picked up. Not sure if that’s true, but I always pick it up as a matter of curtesy. I’m fastidious about picking up dog poo, even if I’m out with half a dozen dogs and I wish humans were as good about picking up their rubbish.

Appletreecorner · 12/05/2018 20:58

Don't Wales And fish crap in the ocean?

I can't speak for everyone in Wales but this Welshlady doesn't crap in the ocean 😂😂

I'm sure all fish do though! 😉

mathanxiety · 13/05/2018 00:32

Yes, I was talking about the scale of beef production, not venison (wrt zebra farming).

Yes, farmed for meat, Iamagreyhoundwarrior.

ree070603 · 13/05/2018 13:22

I'm not a dog owner and I can see your point. I think the man was being bullying/ unreasonable. I agree with others that your dog should not be such a distance away from you. As another point my son is terrified of dogs and has a terrible fear of dogs let loose to run which occasionally come up to him and I often wish that dog owners considered this. At times the owner will see his fear and shout that the dog is friendly but this isn't the point it's the way they bound over at speed that frightens him and we have had to avoid walks in the country and beaches because of this. I know there isn't a solution but I do wonder if dog owners think that because they like dogs and arent afraid that everyone feels the same.

Loopyloopy · 18/05/2018 02:32

Toxoplasma causes blindess in children if contracted in utero. You catch it from cats, not dogs. Toxocarisis is caught from dogs, and in very rare cases can cause damage one eye, and in almost unheard of cases, can get into the brain. Infections in humans are usually harmless amd short - lived, and can be prevented by regularly worming your dog.

Loopyloopy · 18/05/2018 02:34

I'm not saying that you shouldn't regularly clean up after your dog - I'm just saying "tone down the hystetia a little".

slowlywiltingpetal · 18/05/2018 02:48

I would say you're both in the wrong, there's this amazing beach, people walk their dogs, the number of people you see covering dog mess with sand, or dogs defecating on the shoreline. All I'm going to say is imagine if you're a surfer...

Puffycat · 18/05/2018 03:01

Wow, this one has got legs!
We are talking about dog shite here.
Anyone who doesn’t pick up their dog crap should be made to eat it.
If it lands in the sea, ah hem, would you expect the owner to swim out for it?!
