Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

I'm not going to stop taking my kids to the beach in the summer just because of reckless owners

Fine.... 🤷

ScattyCharly · 07/05/2018 23:26

I used to go to a beautiful south coast beach, near relatives. The very last time I went to the sea there was when I approached the sea with bare feet, wearing a swimming costume and was greeted by a dog shit with little waves washing over it slightly. It was so disgusting, I never ever returned. I really do think that there should be different beaches for people and dogs. In some areas there are. I don't know what you could have done on this occasion OP and I woulnd't have expected you to wade into the sea but it is grim.

SandAndSea · 07/05/2018 23:26

Dog lover here.

YWBVU letting your dog run far away from you. Dog owners who do this are an utter nightmare to other people, not just because of the poo issue but also because your dog isn't under proper control in that situation and can easily become a nuisance to other people.

mousecar · 07/05/2018 23:27

the angry man was being unreasonable!! You did your best - there's not a lot more you can do. I find humans quite a lot more offensive than dogs most of the time. Especially this crazy idea that they have more right to the beach somehow than dogs do! You should pick it up always if you can, but all this shouldn't have dogs on beaches is really anthropocentric and the reason why the sea is full of shite WE put there. Cos we reckon we've got more rights to the planet than any other living things.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/05/2018 23:27

2Sailors1BabyComing are you saying that’s why the sea is so salty?

2Sailors1BabyComing · 07/05/2018 23:28

I'm saying don't eat the fish...

dadshere · 07/05/2018 23:29

I am sorry to be the one to say it, but you are a disgusting human being. Dog poo is foul, it does not break down easily, carries potentially lethal pathogenic bacteria and smells disgusting. There should never be a situation where your dog fouls and you are not able to clean it. If there is, it is your fault. You disgust me. The man was right, you do make the world a disgusting place.

Today 21:48 idril

I agree with Wowzel.

I also don't own a dog either but can't you keep your dog on a lead until they've gone to the toilet? Dog poo on a beach or in the sea is so disgusting

When my late dog was younger, she would not go while on the lead, and she also wouldn't go on pavement, had to be grass or she wouldn't do it.

She eventually got out of this habit, if you can call it that, but keeping her on the lead til she went wouldn't have been an option.

Also, everyone saying how disgusting it is that dog shit went in the sea, where do you think sewerage goes? Plenty of places still have long pipes that dump it all out at sea Hmm

And the sea is full of all kinds of creatures that shit in it.

Plus, don't forget the sea wee'd Grin

SchrodingersCatepillar · 07/05/2018 23:32

He sounds like an aggressive douche, don’t let him intimidate you like that. It was an unfortunate incident but shit happens sometimes (literally). I too am a conscientious poo picker upper but someone had a go at me once when my dog did an unexpected squirt of diarrhoea into a puddle on the footpath. I mean, was I meant to have a fucking ladle on me?

Wobblybitts · 07/05/2018 23:33

Aren’t most beaches off limits to dogs between May and October?
I think you should have waited till the dog had done its business before you let him off the lead

MiddleClassProblem · 07/05/2018 23:33

Wasn’t there a thread about a poo spoon once upon a time?

GladAllOver · 07/05/2018 23:34

And the sea is full of all kinds of creatures that shit in it

But they don't all shit in the water's edge where children might be paddling.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/05/2018 23:34

Or was it a knife?

MrsDilber · 07/05/2018 23:34

Yabu.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/05/2018 23:34

GladAllOver nope but some kids shit there. Seem that a few times...

This. You're absolutely disgusting OP.

No, it is illegal for that to happen

Lalliella · 07/05/2018 23:36

YABU. It was within your power to have stopped this from happening. Dog poo in a public place is disgusting, and dogs out of control in a public area shouldn’t be happening. I think dogs shouldn’t be allowed on beaches.

SandAndSea · 07/05/2018 23:37

I also agree that the man sounds really over the top and shit happens.

willsa · 07/05/2018 23:38

I hope for the day when all pets will be banned ( particularly all outside-shitting-roaming types ). Animals are banned from circus now, Zoos are next on the list. Please, pets be next.

2Sailors1BabyComing · 07/05/2018 23:40

@dadshere

What exactly do you think ships do with sewage? And gray water? We can legally dump it at sea untreated if we have full tanks. Now imagine the thousands of ships that are around the UK every single night dumping all that lovely stuff? We also dump treated oil, and in an emergency situation untreated oil and bilges....

Xmasbaby11 · 07/05/2018 23:43

That's really disgusting. I know at that point in time there was nothing you could do but please don't let that happen again. Maybe you should let the dog somewhere else to poo and calm down before you hit the beach.

We've had some horrible incidents on beaches with dogs running wild or pooing - it's very unpleasant.

biscuitraider · 07/05/2018 23:43

This thread is bringing out the usual holier than thou self righteous amongst us. Dogs are living creatures who have a right to enjoy themselves. To see a dog enjoying the sea is a wonderful sight, leave the op alone, she sounds a caring responsible owner who on ONE occasion wasn't able to pick up her dogs poo. Something bigger and stronger did the job for her. No need for all the hysteria. All is well, no one is being affected.

User02 · 07/05/2018 23:43

Apple - my problem is the lack if good manners of dog owners allowing dogs to poo in places like the beach or park and to allow dogs to run towards people/children who may be scared of dogs. I don't like rubbish of any description (poo or wrappings) being left.
I have had 2 large dogs in my garden from neighbouring houses. I was scared of such unruly animals, having been used to very highly trained guard dogs. No apologies from either owner.
Dogs and their owners put me off dogs
It is just good manners not to disrupt the lives of others

mousecar · 07/05/2018 23:47

yes. 2Sailors. Also, I fish sometimes near a huge sewage plant - most of the time it's fine but often enough they just have an overflow and pump it all out into the river. Fishermen get bog roll and wet wipes all clodded round their spinners - it's rank. I bought a composting toilet in protest.
