Aibu to have not picked up my dogs poo?

Today I took my dog out for a walk on the beach, it's a lovely beach and majority of owners including myself pick up their dogs mess.

My dog loves to run out far and swim in the sea, she was ahead of me but in the distance I could see she was crouching down to go to the toilet. I hurried up to catch her however by the time I had got there I realised she had gone to the toilet at the edge of the sea and it was being washed away. I had a look to see if there was anything there but nothing was left.

A man with three large dogs approached me telling me 'your dog has just done a massive shit aren't you going to clean it?!'. I responded that I would have however it's been washed away. He pointed to something floating which wasn't a dog poo and said I should go in and get it.

Aibu to have not gone in? He spoke to me in a really threatening manner and said that it's people like you that make the world a disgusting place. I now don't want to go to the beach for a while as I've seen him there before and he speaks to a lot of other dog walkers, it was very intimidating as there wasn't many around that end of the beach and he was raising his voice and swearing.

If YOUR dog does a dirty, smelly, disease ridden shit in a public place then you pick the fucking thing up. Stop making excuses.

YABVU.

greenteaplease · 07/05/2018 22:53

I went early in the morning as I normally do, other families aren't a hazard as it's only other dog walkers on the beach at this time, I wouldn't take my dog on the beach when it's busy.

I have a large garden already in response to to the poster telling me to buy a larger one, you would have to need multiple acres to wear a springer out completely.. I don't think the sun shines out of my dogs arse I just believe that she should be able to run as most other dogs do on our beach.

This is the first time anything like this has happened, and I was mortified that it has been washed away, all while being berated and sworn at by an angry man.

my mum's dog used to deliberately shit in the sea

echt · 07/05/2018 22:54

So now he swore? Hmm

GladAllOver · 07/05/2018 22:55

do boats etc not empty there waste into the sea??

No. It's illegal. They are required to collect sewage on board and discharge it in port.

OP. Your dog, your problem. Not other peoples' who may be in the sea on a sunny day like today.

pannikin · 07/05/2018 22:56

everyone getting up in arms over a bit of dog poo in the sea is hilarious. The sea is MASSIVE, a tiny bit of dog shit is going to do nothing. The sea is hardly sterile as it is!

FrancisUnderwood · 07/05/2018 22:57

I suspect 'Angry Man' was in fact a responsible dog owner who is sick of taking the rap for irresponsible, lazy owners... much like yourself.

The Earth isn't your dog's toilet.

Appletreecorner · 07/05/2018 22:58

*apple my daughter and I were sitting building a sandcastle when two running dogs knocked us over, then they started fighting.

Who was at fault, the owners who didn’t have them on leads or us just for being there?*

Dogs don't have to be on a lead to be under control. But yes I get your point. I hate dog owners who allow their dogs off lead when they can't control them by voice.

On the other hand why take your kids to a beach that allows dogs at this time of the year? Most beaches don't allow dogs from May 1st to Oct 1st. If you don't want your children to come into contact with dogs there are lots of beaches that allow screeching, wailing, spiteful, obnoxious kids but no dogs. When you find one please take your rubbish and shitty nappies home with you.

greenteaplease · 07/05/2018 22:58

Is the word shit not a swear word?

He used another but I didn't post our full conversation.

Also, it was an accident. A one off accident that may make OP more vigilant next time.

Some times a poo sneaks up on a dog no matter how regular they are. Surely that happens to nearly everybody?

She’s not letting it take its morning dump in the sea on a regular basis?

mathanxiety · 07/05/2018 23:02

YABU to have let your dog run so far off, whether it was a busy time or not.

You don't know who else might have possibly decided to go to the beach so early, what dog he might have got into a fight with, what owner or other people he might have bothered, and you were too far off to intervene, to pay enough attention to what he was doing or to track down a poo he did in the sand, away from the water's edge.

I agree you should only release him from the leash after he has pooped. That way you would not only be able to pick up the poo but you would be able to keep him at heel and prevent him from doing it in the water.

Do you care enough to do this? I am surprised you would not have had this routine as a matter of course.
I think the man had a point about people like you spoiling things for other dog owners.

greenteaplease · 07/05/2018 23:04

francisunderwood I've picked up my dogs mess every time except this occasion.

My dog is very well looked after, I don't take her out in peak times to avoid her causing a disturbance and always dispose of her waste properly. I'd consider myself a responsible owner but one does occasion change all of that?

Our beach doesn't have a ban on dogs being off leads even in peak seasons but I choose not to take her then. It's a dog friendly beach.

MiddleClassProblem -
First thing in the morning you can be pretty sure a dog who has not been out all night is going to evacuate his bowels pretty thoroughly. And the OP did not mention a previous large dump that she picked up this morning, with the one in the water constituting an unexpected Part Deux.

She is apparently in the habit of letting her dog run a good distance from her before making sure he has already pooped.

Maybe the other dog owner has seen the dog running too far for effective control by the OP before and this morning was the last straw?

Appletreecorner · 07/05/2018 23:07

we've a dog but I wouldn't bring her to beach in summer. Even on a leash she gets so excited prefers quiet

Poor dog 😪 Ever thought about training her so she can enjoy days out with the rest of the family?

User02 · 07/05/2018 23:08

Apple - this is Mumsnet. It is probably best for people who have children. Why do you hate children so much? You seem very fond of your dog

MiddleClassProblem · 07/05/2018 23:09

My dog poos right after his breakie and but not on his first walk so it would be a surprise poo if he did.

She didn’t list his bowl movements or usual routine though, you are correct 🕵🏽‍♀️

Appletreecorner · 07/05/2018 23:14

Greentea. Don't bite.... Dogs crap - fact! You will find the majority of posters flaming you are not dog owners. Their children crap on the beach and in the sea too. How many shitty nappies has your dog come across left on the beach - because the perfect parents can't be arsed to take them home? Along with the rubbish they leave to pollute our oceans and kill sea life.

A little bit of dog crap pales into significance. You have already said you always pick up after your dog. Your dog crapping in the sea isn't a daily occurrence. Forget about it now x

Appletreecorner · 07/05/2018 23:16

User I don't hate children. I have two. I don't pander to the unreasonable requests of parents who think their children are the be all and end all. That's all. BTW I love my dog 😘

bunce · 07/05/2018 23:18

I wouldn't worry about it OP i exercise my dogs on a beach sometimes 6 miles long and at low tide its huge. These things happen. Pick one up you come across thats not your dogs for karma points !

Oh and enjoy your dogs off lead walks ! Mine don't have leads they walk to heal on command and roam up-to about 1/2 a mile away at a time.

nmg85 · 07/05/2018 23:18

There are beaches that are dog friendly and beaches that aren't, this surely suits everyone's needs? Even if the dog had been on lead by the time you get the bag out a wave could of carried it away easily if happened in the water.

Most people are very responsible dog owners. I have 2 one that is reliable and one which can easily get over excited and deaf when it comes to recall. If we are around other people especially non dog owners my devil deaf dog stays on lead. They are always cleared up after and kept away from other people... why shouldn't we be able to walk them in selected places??

People on here get so judgemental when it really isn't justified

User02 · 07/05/2018 23:19

Apple I would not be any more impressed if a family with children left used nappies or picnic wrappings on the beach.
It is a question of not allowing your choices to do harm to others

willsa · 07/05/2018 23:22

Appletreecorner
You OK hun?

Nicknacky · 07/05/2018 23:23

apple my beach had no restrictions about use although the local media have been saying something about it after some dog bites lately.

I'm not going to stop taking my kids to the beach in the summer just because of reckless owners.

And as for your rude comments I always took rubbish and "shitey nappies" home with me when my kids were younger.

Appletreecorner · 07/05/2018 23:24

Yes User. So what exactly is your problem?

2Sailors1BabyComing · 07/05/2018 23:24

Seriously? If a bit of dog shit that's in the ocean is so fing concerning for some of you uptight drama llamas I won't even bother telling you what we in the merchant navy ditch at sea on a daily basis. Let's just say it's a lot more damaging than a single dog poo.

Also. Anecdotally. For those that think even if OP was there up her pooches arse ready to whip out a doggy bag in a second, consider this. We launched a dummy at sea for a MOB drill. Literally seconds later the current had taken it out of the sight of 14 out of 17 crew members that were stood with fingers pointed on it. It was a flat calm day. That 15 stone human sized dummy in hi viz clothing couldn't be seen for love nor money.

Do bore off please. Bloody hysterical uptight harridans.
