To think it’s really annoying when a car parks right next to your car in an almost empty car park

Is it just me or does anyone else find this really irritating, parked my car in the almost empty garden centre carpark, which has about 100 spaces, I parked in the furthest away corner to avoid people who need to park near to the entrance, yet when I returned to my car someone had parked right next to me, so close I struggled to get in the car, there were still only a few cars in the carpark!

Were you parked in a shady spot by any chance and the driver of the other car also wanted to park in the shade?

DayKay · 06/05/2018 13:01

It’s really annoying and ridiculous.
I always wander what makes a person do this as it makes no sense to me.

Zacjosh · 06/05/2018 13:34

No not a shady spot, just the furthest away corner, I deliberately always pick the furthest away space with plenty of spaces around and almost inevitably someone will park next to me, I just didn’t understand the reasoning. The other day in the supermarket carpark, I watched a driver manoeuvre their car inbetween two other cars, it took a few goes, when all around there were so many empty spaces. Is there a logical explanation?

I find this happens all the time especially if I'm sitting in the car (waiting for the DC, eating my lunch, killing time etc)

SparklyMagpie · 06/05/2018 13:38

I don't drive but I cannot stand when this happens !! Really makes my blood boil if I'm out with my dad or friends and we go to a supermarket...why do they do it?!

Angrybird345 · 06/05/2018 13:38

There are Rseholes out there! Been to an empty beach, some knobby family have chosen 5ft from us to pitch themselves down.... toasters!

Angrybird345 · 06/05/2018 13:38

Tossers!

TheOneWith · 06/05/2018 13:39

YANBU, it’s incredibly annoying.

Same as you I always park at the furthest end of the car park with plenty of spaces around me as I’ve had my car dinged or scraped by too many people opening their own doors into mine, or twats who can’t reverse out of a space without scraping the car next to them. And at least 50% of the time I’ll find someone has parked up right next to me despite the 30 spaces available around us Confused

FASH84 · 06/05/2018 13:39

I don't really notice but it's my dad's absolute pet hate!

Minta85 · 06/05/2018 13:40

I have also wondered about this, and think it could be because of some kind of pack instinct. Safety in numbers etc, so people instinctively want to be near others and so park near other cars in an otherwise empty car park.

maggienolia · 06/05/2018 13:42

I used to watch a chap at work regularly do this.
Almost empty car park and he would still park in between two cars.
Never did work it out...herd instinct?

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 06/05/2018 13:43

It is really annoying, same with people who come & sit right by you on an empty beach or park. I don't understand it. Is it some sort of lemming instinct or sheeplike mentality or they feel safer next to someone? It is bloody weird & gives me the creeps.

OliviaStabler · 06/05/2018 13:45

Happens to me often. I honestly wonder what their thought process is

Rockandrollwithit · 06/05/2018 13:48

Just like the people who will come and sit next to you on the train despite there being other pairs of seats completely empty 🙄.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 06/05/2018 14:01

It's the sheep mentality, drives me insane.
My friend says it's because some people need a car as a visual reference for parking Hmm

Zacjosh · 06/05/2018 15:36

NromBroom do you mean they can’t see or have no awareness of the white lines, that’s a worrying thought.
Olivia, i wonder do they have a thought process, I have wanted to ask sometimes when it happens to me and I see the driver, but I don’t want to appear rude or aggressive , but would love to have an insight to why people do it

Happens to us all the time. Really annoying when you cant get back in your car because some idiot has parked so close. Its usually people in a massive SUV

Firesuit · 06/05/2018 15:58

I'm really annoyed by this as well. On a previous thread on this subject someone who did it said it was because having another car to look at helped them position themselves within the parking space. Apparently only having lines to look at makes it harder to park.

Whitelisbon · 06/05/2018 16:04

Dh does this. Apparently it's easier to park straight if there's another car to line up with.
I'm trying to train him out of it, unsuccessfully so far Angry
I've pointed out the lines, and the fact he drives a piddly wee fiesta, so could park sideways and still be almost in the lines, but, no, it's easier to park next to someone else.

ADuckNamedSplash · 06/05/2018 16:07

YANBU - this happened to me the other day and they parked so close, I couldn't use the doors on that side of the car. I had baby DD with me, so it was a right faff. For the first time in my life, I actually left a note on their windscreen pointing out the (entirely avoidable) inconvenience they'd caused me with their inconsiderate parking.

FrangipaniBlue · 06/05/2018 16:33

We've been put for a run in DHs "show car" today, pulled into a car park with literally 5 cars, DH parks at the far end and across 2 spaces as we were only pulling up for 10mins.

As we're sitting eating our ice creams a car pulls in and not only parks next to us, but not even in the bay, they used DHs car as a parking guide and parked less than a foot away.

I saw the irony and funny side but DH was not amused Grin

Flicketyflack · 06/05/2018 16:35

We used to get this in the cinema, before they allocated seats! A whole empty cinema & people would sit in front of you Grin

userabcname · 06/05/2018 16:39

Yanbu!! I often park in the furthest bit away of the car park if there are no parent spaces so I have room to get DS in and out. I always have someone (usually in some huge fecking van so there's literally no space at all) parked next to me when I get back to my car. Recently I was at the supermarket super early and the place was dead - tons of free spaces. I parked fairly far from the entrance. When I came out of the shop, 2 cars were either side of me and 1 behind! The rest of the car park was still pretty much free. I couldn't bloody believe it.

Mari50 · 06/05/2018 16:41

Annoying as fuck and now I’m utterly bewilders that people are so stupid as to need another car to help them park in a straight line.
This happens to me everywhere though as I always park in a quiet part of a car park and without fail some twat always parks right next to me. Not even in the next but one space but adjacent, in an area with about 40 free spaces.
Irritating as fuck.
