To think this is a puppy farm ?

I have been looking for a puppy for my mum today she doesn't go online (she hasn't worked it out yet Wink) so I said I would have a look around for her.
I found this person on pets 4 homes who had some puppies available in the breed my mum would like and has had before.
The details said the puppies were 14 weeks old. I messaged the seller to ask questions and said can I just check they have had all their injections. As far as I can tell the first ones should be done around 8-10 weeks and then 12 weeks ish.
She said they hadn't and she didn't get them done because when people take the dogs for their second injections they might be a different brand Hmm. I thought fair enough but surely by 14 weeks she should have had them fully vaccinated anyway.
She got very snotty about this and said she has been a breeder for 10 years.
The thing is the puppies won't have been socialised because they won't have been able to leave the house. They are surely open to diseases as-well. I can understand when they are 8 weeks the breeder leaving the new owners to get the injections but to me this is just a way for her to save money.
On further digging she is also selling a litter of completely different breed puppies ! Which is also a massive red flag.
I just hate things like this ! Her profile on pets 4 homes doesn't give anything away apart from the area she lives and that she doesn't have a breeders licence so I don't think there is any way of reporting this.
I know I will be told I'm being unreasonable just ignore it non of my business etc but it's just so sad for the puppies Angry

Never buy animals online!

Catzpyjamas · 05/05/2018 22:53

Yes, it does sound like a puppy farm to me. The SSPCA have a campaign running and advice on how to spot the bad dealers and find proper breeders.

UpstartCrow · 05/05/2018 22:53

''She said they hadn't and she didn't get them done because when people take the dogs for their second injections they might be a different brand''

YANBU, thats a bad excuse from a lazy breeder/puppy flipper.
If any of her dogs had ever seen a vet or had a vaccine, she would know the vet gives you a certificate of vaccination that will be accepted by any other vet. I bet they aren't wormed either.

Ask her if you can have them DNA tested along with the mother and watch her panic - I bet they're suddenly all sold.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 22:53

I wouldn't have bought the puppy online I would have arranged to go and see the puppy in person.

Thanks for the link catz

Yes it did seem like she was incredibly defensive about everything upstart

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 22:56

And also I did think if she was worried about the brand of the vaccine she could tell us the brand and we could call round the local vets to see who gave the same one. There can't be that many variations surely

Sounds very dodgy to me. They should have their first set of vaccinations and should have certificates of breed and DNA testing if necessary for the breed.

Personally I’d find out her details on the pretense of visiting and report her.

musicposy · 05/05/2018 22:58

A good breeder will have a waiting list. The pups will not need to be advertised online. It's a pain going on a waiting list but much safer.

If you don't want to wait, go to a rescue. Your post has red flags all over it. That said, good on you for spotting them. Lots of people don't and that's how these unscrupulous breeders keep going.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:00

Schrodings I did actually think of using someone else's phone to message her to find out her address but she is insisting on taking a deposit on the puppies which is also pretty odd.

Yes, it's a puppy farm. Please don't buy off places like Pets 4 Homes, gumtree, Facebook etc. No decent reputable breeder would ever sell on those sites. At best you're finding backyard breeding, at worst puppy farming.

ThymeLord · 05/05/2018 23:01

*funding, not finding.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:02

Music thanks for the post. Happy to go on a waiting list that is not a problem. So far after searching I haven't been able to find breeders other than on pets 4 homes.

Wolfiefan · 05/05/2018 23:04

You need to start with the breed club of the breed you are interested in. Or rescues.
Pets for homes is all puppy farmers and BYB.
what breed are you after?

musicposy · 05/05/2018 23:04

As far as I know the only main difference is that some vets still give lepto 2 and others have changed to lepto 4. We just started again with lepto 4 when we got our rescue dog. It was a tiny extra expense to start again and I wouldn't have expected that as a reason for him not to have already had his first set of vaccinations.

My parents read up on lepto 4 and decided they wanted to conitinue with lepto 2 (lepto 4 has had reports of adverse effects) and after discussion, the vet agreed to get it in for them.

None of this should be a reason for the breeder not to bother.

Lupinhere37 · 05/05/2018 23:05

Sounds like a puppy farm to me and it fills me with rage just thinking about it.
My poor little rescue dog came from a puppy farm. She’d had multiple “designer” litters and as a result has very stunted growth and is generally terrrified of everything. Every time I think about what she’s been through I just want to cry.
I’m no expert on puppies but our other dog we got as a puppy, although not from a puppy farm. He’d been vaccinated and microchipped as the owner said ( although I don’t know if this is true or not ) it was a legal requirement to microchip by 8 weeks. We got him at 14 weeks, as they didn’t want to let him go before than and it’d all been done when he was dropped off to us.
As I said, I’m certainly no expert on puppies but this doesn’t sound like someone who puts animal welfare first.
Please ask your mum to consider a rescue dog. There are so many out there and it’s been such a rewarding experience for us, not to mention the little dog!
You are not being unreasonable by the way !

Itsear · 05/05/2018 23:07

Rescues are rammed full of dogs, just visit a rescue centre. Your mother is (unwittingly) fuling the barbaric puppy trade.

IdaDown · 05/05/2018 23:08

Could your DM be persuaded to look at an older dog?

None of the puppy and teen problems. Through a rescue they’ll assess temperament and health check the dogs.

My DM (when she was more mobile) used to foster older labs. Win-win. DM got a fellow lazy companion, dog got treats and a sofa!

Older doesn’t mean ancient. Older can be 5/6 yrs up. Hardly knocking on the door.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:08

Where are the best places to look ?where do you find out about these things not online ? Genuine question because I honestly don't know. These are not a pedigree breed that my mum would like they are a cross between two types of dogs so a website like the kennel club probably wouldn't be able to point us in the right direction.
Her reasons for wanting that specific kind of dog are that my grandad died not long ago and she had one when she was a child, it brings back lots of memories for her. I know there are lots of people who will say get a rescue dog and I totally agree I have two of my own. But I can't talk her out of the fact that that is the dog she would like.

musicposy · 05/05/2018 23:10

Breed Clubs

See if your breed is on here as a starting point.

Wolfiefan · 05/05/2018 23:11

what cross?

AlpacaLypse · 05/05/2018 23:11

Definitely puppy farm Sad

Research your mum's preferred breed society. Not the Kennel Club. They're knee deep in the same shit I'm sorry to say.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:12

This might be a bit outing as far as you all being able to find the said breeder but due to the fact I actually think she is vile Angry
The kind of dog she is looking for is a chorkie it is a cross between a chihuahua and a Yorkshire terrier. I think chorkie is the new posh name for them because my mum said very tongue in cheek they used to tell people their dog was a Heinz 57 Wink

OP posts:
ThymeLord · 05/05/2018 23:13

There might be a breed specific rescue? You could maybe register with Dogs Trust or similar and tell them what you're looking for. Sorry about your grandad OP.

ThymeLord · 05/05/2018 23:14

Could she be persuaded to one of those two breeds? There are specific rescues for both.

Wolfiefan · 05/05/2018 23:14

I very much doubt you will find one of those that isn't puppy farmed. Why not a yorkie or a chi?
