To think this is a puppy farm ?

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 22:46

I have been looking for a puppy for my mum today she doesn't go online (she hasn't worked it out yet Wink) so I said I would have a look around for her.
I found this person on pets 4 homes who had some puppies available in the breed my mum would like and has had before.
The details said the puppies were 14 weeks old. I messaged the seller to ask questions and said can I just check they have had all their injections. As far as I can tell the first ones should be done around 8-10 weeks and then 12 weeks ish.
She said they hadn't and she didn't get them done because when people take the dogs for their second injections they might be a different brand Hmm. I thought fair enough but surely by 14 weeks she should have had them fully vaccinated anyway.
She got very snotty about this and said she has been a breeder for 10 years.
The thing is the puppies won't have been socialised because they won't have been able to leave the house. They are surely open to diseases as-well. I can understand when they are 8 weeks the breeder leaving the new owners to get the injections but to me this is just a way for her to save money.
On further digging she is also selling a litter of completely different breed puppies ! Which is also a massive red flag.
I just hate things like this ! Her profile on pets 4 homes doesn't give anything away apart from the area she lives and that she doesn't have a breeders licence so I don't think there is any way of reporting this.
I know I will be told I'm being unreasonable just ignore it non of my business etc but it's just so sad for the puppies Angry

Sorry missed about 8 posts, including OP update. Could you tell us which cross you're looking for OP?

Lupinhere37 · 05/05/2018 23:15

Well if you’re mum is set on this particular breed, then could you maybe ask your vet for any suggestions?
Or register with local or national rescue centres and say you are looking for one of these specifically. If it’s a common “puppy farm” breed then odds on there will be rescues that have these dogs in. Puppy farms and backyard breeders have a tendency to get shut down and dogs seized. Also, as happened with my rescue, she was handed in to a rescue centre, unwanted, after she’d had many litters.
So there may be other ways to get one of these breeds.

AlpacaLypse · 05/05/2018 23:16

And xposted another 8 or so...

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:17

Thank you thyme he was very poorly in the end and it was very sad but we like to think he is in a happier place. My mum has spent the last few years caring for him after he moved in with her so she just hasn't had time for a dog. Thank you for the recommendation of the yorkie rescue though I will certainly look into that tbh I think after seeing pictures of Ben he looked like a yorkie anyway Wink

Sadly, you're going to find it much harder to find a reputable breeder of a cross.

Maybe start by looking at Many Tears Rescue? They have a lot of pedigrees and cross breeds on there, sadly many of them ex breeding bitches saved from their plight, but often puppies too. If you are patient you may well find the dog you want there.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:19

Apparently they got the last one bear in mind this was in the 70's from her friend down the road who's two dogs had had a little get together and produced Ben and his siblings. I have told her this scenario is incredibly unlikely to happen again Wink

sheldonesque · 05/05/2018 23:20

On her responses alone I would report. If she is reputable they will find nothing worrying.

If she isn't then some miserable hounds will be hopefully be rescued. Win win for me.

Battleax · 05/05/2018 23:21

Never buy animals online!

I don’t think OP was proposing to, was she?

It’s very hard to get info about anything except online now. But information isn’t a transaction, and she’s clued up and come to ask here (online) about her suspicions.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:22

Thank you Rosie for the suggestion. My British bulldog was one such breeding dog who was rescued. I have never actually looked into a dog that is not a rescue luckily I have learnt the lesson very early on after the attitude of this particular breeder

The only people who advertise online are bastard puppy farmers and clueless backyard breeders. Ask for info? Sure? Google Chorkie pups for sale? No.

Battleax · 05/05/2018 23:24

A lot of the smaller rescues hve FB groups.

Join a few of those and ask around and you’ll soon find yourself swept into the dog Mafia. They’ll find you one if there’s one to be found.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:24

Ok Wolfie thank you I think I get the picture that you think I am a complete idiot. However being someone who has never actually bought a dog i has no reason to think that pets 4 homes was not a reputable site.

A big clue of a decent breeder (at least IMO) is health checks. A cross between any two breeds is no less likely to be healthy than either of the breeds it's come from, so both parents need relevant health checks for their breed.
Another one is a decent contract that states they will/must be given the dog back if you decide you can no longer keep it.

Some breeders of smaller dogs prefer to hold off on vaccinations for a while since most vets give the same size vaccinations to a Yorkie puppy as they do an adult Great Dane. And the breeder is right in that if it's a change of brands or vets many vets insist on restarting the vaccinations. If the breeder has been waiting for a seller for this pup then it's a bit hard to say they should have vaccinated it by 14 weeks as what if a new owner came along at 11 weeks or 13 weeks etc? If she takes it now for a vaccination then a new owner could come along next week and the pup will have to have the vaccinations all over again, and over-vaccination is harmful.

But no, I don't think this breeder is an ethical breeder, but it might be hard, if not impossible, to find one for a cross breed.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:27

Battleaxe I am all for the dog mafia hehe my page is filled with bullie and boxer rescues. I have joined chorkie owners uk so fingers crossed. Still not really sure how to go about reporting this cretin I'm thinking maybe an email to rspca with a link to the add

Right but it’s impoartant to

be clear that the internet isn’t the source of all ills. Even on Pets4Homes you can’t actually “buy a dog online”. I just wanted to avoid the impression that online sales are the thing you need to avoid. Puppy farms and dodgy breeders are what you need to avoid.

UpstartCrow · 05/05/2018 23:28

A lot of breed rescues have cross breeds in them, so ask around. I agree with you, its very difficult to find a decent breeder unless you are already in with the in crowd.

Itsear · 05/05/2018 23:28

Just keeping looking at your local rescues, those breeds currently in fashion crop up now and again. There is no rush. If you are willing to divulge your location people could make suggestions.

🤞🏻🙂

They’re fab.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:28

Yes understand what you are saying rafikils with regards to the vaccine. This wasn't the only puppy tho she still has the whole litter at 14 weeks

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 05/05/2018 23:32

And puppy farms advertise online. Decent breeders don't have to.

GruffaIo · 05/05/2018 23:32

Diana Brimblecombe (Berks) gets puppy farm dogs, if this cross is particularly likely to come in that way - their rescue website is www.dbarc.org.uk

We got our 'reject' collie from them a couple of years - very impressive place that fundraises a lot for medical costs to rehab their puppy farm intake. If you're local / interested, bear in mind that their dogs get reserved (ie. pending adopting) quite quickly.

sleeplesswonderer · 05/05/2018 23:32

Itscar I know the little handbag dogs are really fashionable at the moment aren't they ! I don't think she is thinking fashion wise I think she is just being very nostalgic which is understandable. If she wasn't so stuck on having a little one I would suggest a lab or a boxer because I think they are great. I could have found at least 5 boxers who need rehoming this week alone Sad

Yeah you said that further up wolfie. It seems more of an attack on me rather than giving me suggestions on how to report this but fair enough. I have told you what has happened and I have listened to what you have said quite a few times. I'm not disagreeing with you but it is feeling like it is going a bit far now

There are plenty of "pedigree" puppies advertised on pets4homes. Take a look. Any breed you want is advertised on there.
