I love scary films and am looking for some inspiration for ones to download. I like any from psychological thrillers, to paranormal ones, to gory serial killer ones. Please let me know your favourites

Love the Hellraiser films - actually find them rather beautiful, if OTT (much like Clive Barker's books then!)

Guillermo del Toro also does beautiful films. Forget the watered-down (geddit?!) The Shape of Water and do Pan's Labyrinth or Cronos.

gamerwidow · 05/05/2018 23:05

Evil Dead trilogy are my favourites especially Army of Darkness but I only really enjoy comedy horrors hate the current trend of torture porn.

efeslight · 05/05/2018 23:10

I also like it follows, and as a pp wrote, it was unsettling. I read an article that described how it was designed to be exactly that. For example, the weather and seasons change and the clothes people wear do not suit the conditions. There are no real clues to a time frame and it is hard to work out if it's a contemporary film or not, technology is vague apart from super hi tech phones. I would like to watch it again.

Tanith · 05/05/2018 23:53

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned.
However, I will add:
The Vanishing (Dutch original)
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark
Freaks

SpecialAgentNobody · 06/05/2018 08:19

A really unsettling one for me was called Shelter about 6 people who take refuge in a nuclear shelter. It was utterly grim but I really liked it. Not sure it’s true horror but it would be my idea of hell.

Teapiggy · 06/05/2018 09:03

@Thereshegoesagain

The film your talking about is Creep it's not got the best ratings but I found it so unsettling and made me question my wanting to see the good in everyone.

Teapiggy · 06/05/2018 09:11

It's a really bad film but one that really got to me was House of a Thousand Corpses. it was just so grim.

Wobblebeans · 06/05/2018 09:15

One I watched years ago now, I think it's called 'the hole'. It's more of a thriller/drama but it really got to me because I'm claustrophobic

Others I enjoy are
The ring
Saw (only seen 1, 2 and 3 so far)
The hills have eyes
Silence of the lambs
Hostel 1 and 2
Halloween

jaseyraex · 06/05/2018 09:21

PamPooveysCow If you like a good zombie comedy, I thoroughly recommend Cockneys vs Zombies. It is hysterical and actually really good! Also, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Grin

Frosty66612 Absolute yes to the Hellraiser movies. Those are what got me in to horror, I used to watch them with my dad when I was young (probably too young!). The Cenobites terrified me, especially the one with the chattering teeth for some reason. He gave me nightmares!

Frosty66612 · 06/05/2018 10:22

@jasey that cenobite scared me the most too!
A lot of you have recommended “It Follows” so i’ll be watching that later on

Before I wake was pretty good as well. Netflix occasionally shows the odd horror gem.
I loved the first sinister but the sequel was awful.

Heartofglass12345 · 06/05/2018 23:21

I'm watching 1408 at the moment and it's really good! Not so much scary but psychological. I like identity too, both have John Cusack in lol

emsmum79 · 06/05/2018 23:34

@BabloHoney, My Little Eye scared me so badly about 14 years ago I try to avoid thinking about it still! And I'm not that easily scared. Well, I am, but I enjoy being scared. That film, I did not enjoy!

My favourites:

The Silence of the Lambs
Event Horizon
Psycho
Misery
Fallen

Pandabee11 · 07/05/2018 00:05

Invasion of the body snatchers
Let the right one in
The pit and the pendulum
90s It 🎈.
Jacobs ladder
Anything with Hannibal Lecter in it, especially the TV show.

I love watching horror movies, but my family just hate them.

ferretygubbins · 07/05/2018 00:19

I really enjoyed 'classics' like I spit on your Grave, Cannibal Holocaust and The Burning but as I watched them on grainy VHS whilst aged about 9 or 10 I fear they may not have aged well...

musicposy · 07/05/2018 00:36

I loved Get Out - one of my favourite recent films.

Annnabelle and the recent prequel I enjoyed, and the Paranormal Activity films and the exorcist.

The Visit is probably my favourite ever, though. It's more of a thriller dressed up as a horror but I loved it.

I've watched most horrors that have been released in the last 3 or 4 years, since DD was old enough to come to the cinema with me. She loves horrors and is a good companion as she doesn't talk or scream unduly or, my pet hate, (I'm looking at you, DH) laugh.

rainbowcakes · 07/05/2018 00:41

Probably a bit embarrassing to admit this, but all the waxwork figures in House of Wax creeped me right out! And the bit where one guy is strapped into a chair and still alive and sprayed with hot wax, and made into a waxwork figure makes my skin crawl! God knows why because its a pretty dire film really Grin

I watched the grudge in the cinema when I was 15 and it haunted me for weeks. Seen it a couple of times since but refuse to watch it now!

Human centipede....absolute garbage really but the whole premise of it is so disturbing!

I actually really enjoy horror films but could never watch them on my own!

imweirdandcool · 07/05/2018 01:50

grave encounters

salsmum · 07/05/2018 02:23

Wolf creek was quite horrific both 1 and 2 but probably more gore than horror.

Andromeida59 · 07/05/2018 10:31

I love gothic horrors so "The Woman in Black" is one of my favourites. Also, a lesser known one called "The Dark", low budget film set in Wales. Really spooky!

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 07/05/2018 20:57

The one film that scares me to this day is Stephen King’s IT, the original miniseries with Tim Curry, who was utterly brilliant as Pennywise.

Also:

  • Wolf Creek
  • Hush
  • The Exorcist
  • I Know What You Did Last Summer (my teenage years were the ‘90s!)
  • Carrie (well, anything by King tbh!)
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
  • The Omen (original again)
  • Child’s Play (Chucky scared the f out of me!)
  • IT Follows (like many others!)
  • Most Japanese horror films such as Dark Water, Ringu etc.
mygoditsfullofstars · 07/05/2018 21:07

Poughkeepsie Tapes, Rosemary's Baby, Suspiria, The Exorcist, The Omen, It Follows, love horror films in all it's genres.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 07/05/2018 21:08

The Birds.

SluttyButty · 07/05/2018 21:17

The one that stayed in my memory is Happy Birthday To Me. It was gruesome from memory.

Frosty66612 · 07/05/2018 21:25

Watched IT follows on Netflix after a few of you recommended it and I didn’t find it remotely scary. It was quite a good film though.

A lot of you have said Wolf Creek and I definitely agree that that’s a really creepy one. That sort of scenario would be my worst nightmare
