I love scary films and am looking for some inspiration for ones to download. I like any from psychological thrillers, to paranormal ones, to gory serial killer ones. Please let me know your favourites

I'm a real fan of classics like Don't Look Now (will never buy a red duffle coat), Rosemary's Baby, The Omen films (original ones) and some of the Hammer House of Horrors.

fullponty · 05/05/2018 18:07

I watched Mother! recently and actually had to pause it for a while as it was so horrific I started to feel a bit panicky. No film has ever had that effect on me before.

Greenglassteacup · 05/05/2018 18:13

Oh yes the omen

Smeldra · 05/05/2018 18:15

Oh and The Shining - I found myself walking very fast down a hotel corridor recently because I kept expecting to see those children standing at the end Grin

Graphista · 05/05/2018 18:20

Totally my wheelhouse!

Proper scary the 70's classics are Best But they can be hard to find to download in decent quality. And DEFINITELY don't bother with the remakes they're shite!

More recent ones I'd recommend:
The last house on the left (could be triggering for some)
Shut in (the 2015 one not 2016)
Red Eye is good but not particularly scary I don't think.
Cabin fever
The strangers
Ted Bundy (2002) but be warned its one of the few serial killer/true story films that DOESN'T sanitise what they did.

Very few actually scare me now but apart from Red Eye (which I can happily watch while falling asleep along with panic room I've watched them so many times). That list does. By this point same is true of Cube too.

JonSnowsCloak I totally agree. The art of suspension of disbelief and true suspense is all but gone. We need a new Hitchcock, Carpenter, Landis.

The scream franchise is fun but more for the meta refs. The craft similarly fun.

Sorry but I thought woman in black was shite. I went to see it with dd who was 11/12 at the time and even she didn't find it scary!

Can't find torture porn crap like saw scary either just boring.

BoiledFrog · 05/05/2018 18:20

Smeldra, I went to the cinema with my kids to watch ready player one and the only bit that was entertaining was the shining parody Grin. That part in the hotel room is truly creepy.

Thereshegoesagain · 05/05/2018 18:23

I love the paranormal activity series.
Skeleton key is totally underrated.
I love the American Horrir Story series on Netflix’s - the first one is the best.
Someone on here on another thread about a year ago recommend one. Can’t remember it’s name. 2 guys, one hired the other to shoot a video for him ( he was dying he said I think) turned out to be a psychopath and final scene is one of the most horrible scary things I’ve ever watched. I shudder at the thought of it.

BoiledFrog · 05/05/2018 18:23

Graphista I did indeed find last House on the left quite triggering, despite being able to watch irreversible Hmm

I'm intrigued by Ted Bundy, will look it up.

BoiledFrog · 05/05/2018 18:27

Did nobody else get a "fuck yes" vibe from the end of hostel 2? I know I shouldn't have founding it really goddamn satisfying, but I did Blush

ALongHardWinter · 05/05/2018 18:28

I don't know if this counts as a horror movie but my favourite is 'An American Werewolf in London'. Some people say it's a black comedy, but I think it was pretty horrific in places! I also loved 'The Woman in Black' and 'The Ring'.

Graphista · 05/05/2018 18:29

In the light of the moon is the ed gein one I think. It's ok.

jaseyraex · 05/05/2018 18:32

Graphista I am so pleased to see someone else who thinks The Woman In Black was crap! I didn't like Get Out either, good concept but very boring.

haverhill · 05/05/2018 18:33

Suspiria is something else. I was so freaked out I couldn’t move to turn it off Grin. The Haunting (original) is masterful psychological mind-fuckery.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 05/05/2018 18:35

Not my favourite movies as such, but quite scary and not necessarily well known...
The Vault
The Last Shift.
Apologies if already mentioned.

Heartofglass12345 · 05/05/2018 18:36

I love the original Halloween and Texas chainsaw massacre. If you like saw, watch 'the collector' and 'the collection' they are so gory and gross it's great lol. I really liked insidious, the conjuring and sinister too.

Heartofglass12345 · 05/05/2018 18:37

Oh and orphan, very creepy and unexpected ending!

Graphista · 05/05/2018 18:37

BoiledFrog yes it doesn't hold back does it? Last house on the left. Not seen irreversible

Graphista · 05/05/2018 18:38

Woman in black was dreadful! To me it was like a high budget 6th form project!

teaandtoast · 05/05/2018 18:39

House - horror comedy, one of my favourite genres.
The Thing
Event Horizon
The Others

Andrewofgg · 05/05/2018 18:39

The Abominable Dr Phibes. I saw it with an early GF who liked horror films but it scared us both so much that we ended up DTD for the first time (together) - which is why it may be rubbish but it has a place in my heart!

Thebookswereherfriends · 05/05/2018 18:41

Anyone else seen Dark water? It's a Japanese horror I watched with a horror obsessed flatmate, I am a bit wimpy and had to watch most of it through my fingers, but my flatmate was pretty scared, too.

Huffinpuff · 05/05/2018 18:43

The Shining
Sixth Sense
and for a classic Hammer Horror you can't beat The Fall of The House of Usher.

Hooli · 05/05/2018 18:45

Another vote for Rec. I jumped so much I knocked my glasses off.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 05/05/2018 18:50

Enjoyed Oculus...had me and my friends trying to hide behind one cardi. We may be slightly wimpy lol

Already been said but definitely votes for
The orphanage
Descent
Paranormal activity.. Though only up to the 3rd then they got super silly and more funny. . Not sure if they were meant to be seen that way.

MarthaArthur · 05/05/2018 18:50

The strangers is one of my faves.
Texas chainsaw massacre
