I love scary films and am looking for some inspiration for ones to download. I like any from psychological thrillers, to paranormal ones, to gory serial killer ones. Please let me know your favourites

The woman in black

Creep (not alot happens but made me jump alot)

The ring

The babadook but it made me feel sad as if been really struggling to deal with 3 children as a newly single mum so hit quite close to home.

Vhs2 I'm not sure why it scared me so much but it was creepy.

I'm not liking many new horrors as I find them a bit boring.

jaseyraex · 05/05/2018 10:58

I know you're asking for movies but there's some great TV shows out there! The Mist TV series is pretty good. Bates Motel, Scream, American Horror Story (first two series in particular, goes downhill after that in my opinion), Penny Dreadful, Hemlock Grove.

Netflix original movies can be quite good. Veronica was good, not as scary as it was hyped up to be but still good. Quite enjoyed The Gallows. Misery. Really enjoyed The Babadook. Cabin in the Woods remake. The Orphanage.

Of course, Japanese horrors are fantastic but I'd assume you've seen a lot of them Grin

MsGameandWatching · 05/05/2018 11:02

Get Out was the best one I have seen in years.

Roussette · 05/05/2018 11:09

Frosty have you watched The Resident? Seriously creepy

Also I found Hush terrifying, the helplessness of it all.

The one that affected me (!) was the one where people were trapped in a cube, it wasn't called Cube Zero, can't remember name of it, but it was just so depressing and what I imagine hell is like.

Aquietplace · 05/05/2018 11:10

A Quiet Place! The Conjuring, Get Out and Halloween

Frosty66612 · 05/05/2018 11:19

@jasey American Horror Story is my favourite program and I definitely liked the second series best in the mental asylum.
@roussette I haven’t seen The Resident. I’ll check it out. Agree that Hush is great and I think the cube one you’re referring to is called The Cube. I actually watched that last week as it was on telly. Agree that it must be what Hell is like

Roussette · 05/05/2018 11:34

Yes, it is called Cube! I was thinking it was some other title, but yes, that's it! One of my DCs watched it and said 'Mum, you'll enjoy it'. NO I did NOT!!

I think you'd enjoy The Resident going by your other choices, it's almost like one of those films when you can predict what happens which makes it 100 times worse to watch and you want to shout out the whole time Grin

FrangipaniBlue · 05/05/2018 11:35

Pet!! Not what I was expecting at all......

The Babadook really unsettled me, I couldn't sleep for a good week Confused

Frosty66612 · 05/05/2018 12:57

One that I really liked was called The Visit. Enjoyed the twist at the end and the granny was creepy

vampirethriller · 05/05/2018 13:22

It's bit silly but From Dusk Til Dawn
30 Days of Night
Colin (low budget zombie)

Ironfloor · 05/05/2018 14:14

@frosty - yes, that's it! It's 'Within'. Give it a go if you haven't already watched it. It gave me the chills and since it's a very plausible plot, kept me looking over my shoulder inside our house for quite a while!

Oh, I'd forgotten about The Visit. It's not scary throughout, but there is once scene which makes you properly jump.

And the Grudge is alright, too, especially that scenes where the ghost girl crawls down the hallway and can be seen in the cctv camera.

Not so much the Ring. Or it could be because I've been desensitised by watching it a million times.

I do agree that the Japanese can do horror better than anyone else.

hammeringinmyhead · 05/05/2018 15:07

REC is awesome. But my favourite is probably It Follows.

Roussette · 05/05/2018 16:55

Like the sound of some of these!

Jonsnowsghost · 05/05/2018 17:00

Scream and It follows are my favourite horror films, Horns is very high up on the list too! I love horror films and generally watch them if I have nothing else to do which people think is weird Grin

CandleWithHair · 05/05/2018 17:21

REC is bloody awesome. But only the first one.

Haven’t watched it yet but my horror loving friends have been raving about Veronica on Netflix.

Greenglassteacup · 05/05/2018 17:27

Carnival of Souls (original black & white version)

Rosemary’s Baby

The Shining

The Woods

Raw

Pan’s Labyrinth

Greenglassteacup · 05/05/2018 17:29

Ooh & all of the seasons of American Horror Story except Roanoake which was shite

gamerchick · 05/05/2018 17:30

Devils rejects.

I don’t think there is such a thing as a scary horror these days tbh. I did like ‘broken’ (Australian) which had me a bag of nerves all the way through and shuttle which you think is a B movie for a while but it’s stayed with me years later, thought provoking.

Killing ground is another that brings on the anxiety as well, I think that’s another Australian one.

Scary? I wish there was one Grin

BoiledFrog · 05/05/2018 17:37

Halloween
Funny games
Hostel 1 & 2
Descent
The orphanage
The ring (Japanese one)
Mute witness
Kill list
If you like gory, watch cannibal (2008) it is based on the the German guy who advertised for someone to eat on the internet, I can usually stand gore or disturbing themes. That film was hard to watch, seriously disturbing.

BoiledFrog · 05/05/2018 17:39

There was also a really low budget one on the horror channel called Tony:serial killer, I didn't have high hopes, but really enjoyed it Grin

Greenglassteacup · 05/05/2018 17:40

I also like shit ones like The Craft

JonSnowsCloak · 05/05/2018 17:54

I have found my people! Does anyone else think that most horror films these days aren't a patch on those from 20 years ago? More gore etc than suspense and making you jump, the only ones I have liked recently have been The Conjuring films. Going to see A Quiet Place tomorrow! I loved Poltergeist and Halloween back when I was younger. My OH is terrified of clowns and won't watch anything scary with me!

PurpleTigerLove · 05/05/2018 18:01

I love horrror movies . I’ve watched all the saw movies recently which are very clever . The descent is a excellent movie . Wolf creek is good but disturbing. The series is also worth a watch .

PurpleTigerLove · 05/05/2018 18:02

The stage show of The woman in black is fabulous .

HildaZelda · 05/05/2018 18:05

Ed Gein. There are two though. You want the one with Steve Railsback. The other one is so bad it's practically a comedy.
