This just popped up in my feed. Talking about someone that had an abortion as they wouldn't be able to afford the child without credits. It's not just an isolated issue, a charity says they've had a huge increase in women contacting about abortions as now they won't be able to afford to have any more children. I'm not sure what the answer is but this is very worrying

Smeddum - bad form

Right ok, and dehumanising anyone on benefits as scroungers, lazy and workshy isn’t? I called out hypocrisy. If you don’t like it, maybe you need to rethink your priorities?

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:40

@crunchymint the OP on the other thread didn’t keep it, it was other posters saying she was daft and should have.

crunchymint · 11/05/2018 13:42

Thanks

LifeBeginsAtGin · 11/05/2018 13:45

I wasn't advocating. Just saying that for £40 I wouldn't faff around calling back and then try to appear righteous by giving it to charity.

The Insurance company paid her the retail price at that time. Theres no defrauding.

Nice trying to twist though.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:46

You said, directly to the OP, that you’d have kept the money the insurance company told her to donate to charity and got yourself a takeaway.

All the while labelling benefit claimants as out for what they can get.

If that isn’t the absolute definition of hypocrisy I don’t know what is.

Bashun · 11/05/2018 13:53

@smedden & Gilead, sigh again I was not judging I am genuinely interested in the issues that were presented. I guess smedden wants to be on the attack. I never presented things as utopian or perfect. If I seemed like I was doing that please accept my apologies, again. I'm not sure what you mean by disabled employers are not treated the same as everyone else. I'm not sure what you mean they come to work they do a job on Friday to get a paycheck what way should they be treated differently or better, hand massages and caviar at lunch given by the employer? All I can say is no one that I know of and I'm not well off is feeding their kids dog food and jumping out of Windows or killing themselves because they aren't making it. We're having too much fun and enjoying our lives and praying that things get better and for us, they usually do. We don't usually ring our hands and cry about it when we see a need we try and fill it what more can I say? I'm not your enemy I'm just a guy trying to learn why people a nation that once ruled 1/5 of the world is now feeding their children dog food that's all. And I don't believe the suicide rate in America is due to poverty it's more likely due to personal dissatisfaction and unhappiness are the tons of anti-psychotic medication being doled out here in the US like candy.
Now, guns are part of the American culture. I'm not here to defend it because it doesn't need defending you don't like personal ownership of guna VB in your country you don't have them. We like our guns we use our guns for protection and our armed populace, the good guys keeps the government honest to a great degree. The US has vast regions where a single law enforcement officer must protect a 100 sq. mile area. Therefore Firearms are critical floor protection. nothing is perfect but for us, the guns stay. Again, I'm just here to learn not judge I'm sorry you interpreted it that way. What overall, yes I believe Americans are happy we can always want more but we make do with what we got and we get on with it. And how was your day?, LOL

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:56

We like our guns we use our guns for protection and our armed populace, the good guys keeps the government honest to a great degree

Uh huh. Tell that to the hundreds of traumatised children whose schools have been shot up recently.

You entirely presented the US as some kind of example to live by (in Obama’s time, maybe, but now? Pffft. You have a sex offending, misogynistic, money worshipping megalomaniac as your president) and sat in judgement of the U.K.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 11/05/2018 13:57

Smeddum. Why are you chasing me around threads trying to twist what I say?? That's not the spirit of MN. I'm entitled to my opinion whether you like it or not.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 13:59

I’m not, we happened to be on two threads at the same time (if you check you’ll see I actually commented on the other thread first so I’m not chasing you anywhere).

Your lack of empathy towards anyone in poverty is bad enough, but to have that attitude while simultaneously admitting you’d use money intended for charity to get a takeaway makes it astonishingly hypocritical.

So that’s my opinion, which I’m entitled to Grin end of derail, sorry OP.

Bashun · 11/05/2018 14:01

@smedden is there an infant in one of your hospitals that has a serious illness and the hospital and your government will not allow the parents to take the Child to Italy for experimental treatment that could save the child's life? If that is part of your National Healthcare spend no, America does not want that kind of healthcare. FYI

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 14:03

First of all could you at least attempt to get my username right?

Secondly. There is a little girl in dire need of healthcare in the US right now and a republican senator has been sending her mother misogynistic hate comments because she dared to try and ask for the help the government denied her disabled child.

There isn’t a child in any hospital that you speak of. Alfie Evans died peacefully in a hospital that offered palliative care until the end. He had no chance of survival.

Now fuck off, because you’re starting to irritate me.

Bashun · 11/05/2018 14:06

@smedden, yes And That is wrong of Trump to do. Shame on him. His behavior is deplorable. Did Great Britain solid part? Did Erie conomy class did you throw yourself out of a window because Trump' said that? I hope not. Do you honestly believe that the totality of the United States of America is summed up in Donald J Trump? LMFAO! We are far greater than the sum of that one part Trump Obama Kennedy Roosevelt or the next person that fills at office. What is an immature shallow myopic comment you made. Whatever false either country has don't you believe that they are not insurmountable? It's not an all-or-nothing venture? That Solutions are possible that aren't on 100% your way?

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 14:08

It’s not fun when someone has a go at your country is it? Next time you sit in so called Christian judgement on others, think on that and wind your neck in.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/05/2018 14:11

The problem with relying on charity such as churches to help poor people, is that only certain kinds of people get help

Yes, I agree that can be an issue ... some might even feel it's making a distinction between deserving/undeserving cases, which is no doubt a whole thread in itself

But at least community groups - unlike vast state bureaucracies - tend to know pretty well what the situation really is on "their patch" and can target help accordingly

I don't pretend that it's the whole answer by any means, but that doesn't mean such groups don't have an important role to play and maybe something to teach us all

Bashun · 11/05/2018 14:12

Smezunn what the person that exists in a state of irritation and I'm sorry for you. But take heart I heae that Alpo is coming out with a new flavor of pet food promised to be a people pleaser. See!! Solutions! I hope that eases some of your irritation. be well

crunchymint · 11/05/2018 14:13

Puzzled I am more cynical. My mum was a single parent in the 60's when single mums were shunned. The church helped mothers who were widowed. But my mum had no help from anyone except the state - and that was much less than a single mum would get today. As a 'fallen woman' she was part of the 'undeserving poor'.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 14:15

be well

I am thanks. And if I’m ever not, I’m fortunate enough to have the NHS.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 14:15

As a 'fallen woman' she was part of the 'undeserving poor'

That’s awful. It’s even more awful that those attitudes are still rife today!

crunchymint · 11/05/2018 14:24

Yes it is. She was told things like - You made your bed, so you have to lie on it.
But this is why we need the welfare state.

crunchymint · 11/05/2018 14:24

And being honest, it is the same things now being said to mothers reliant on benefits who have more than two children.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 14:44

That is awful. I am an adoptee because in the early 80s those same attitudes remained, and my teenage birth mother felt unable to keep me.
And you’re right, those attitudes are still prevalent today. It’s disgusting.

Bashun · 11/05/2018 15:27

AYou are right puzzled. I am just asking if their can be alternative means of helping people in need other than the government. I really am not aware of charities here that shame people or turn them away because they aren't Christian. If they are a tax free charity serving the public then they serve the community ENTIRE community. Church run food pantries come to Mind. They don't ask what religion you are before handing out food. I just think smedden is just angry and incorrectly believes Shouting the loudest means your right. It's funny how no matter what possible recourse you mention they know of but some atrocity as to why a desperately poor person should not try it. I don't know what they mean that the American welfare system is dehumanizing it's participants ??? Wtf does that mean??? Claiming something is true does not necessarily make it true

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 15:29

Bashun you made several sweeping and offensive statements while implying that the US was some kind of paradise with god on its side. Which I pointed out wasn’t true.
Nobody shouted,

Gilead · 11/05/2018 16:10

The trouble with the Uk is the mindset 'what can I get' rather than 'what can I do to help myself'
Tosh!

Just saying that for £40 I wouldn't faff around
this says all there is to say about you. That's a weeks food for dd and me.
