The total collapse of ukip should mean a brexit revote

Seeing that their support has collapsed by over 90% this indicates many have changed their mind on it!

Aibu to say this is a perfect example of why a revote is needed?

Rubbish.
Not everyone who voted Leave was UKIP voter.
They were a party who achieved something unprecedented - their campaigning forced the Tories to run the referendum, (to protect their own majority), and contributed to a major change in the way the UK is governed.
They were succesfuul and now they are not really necessary - so of course people are not voting for them.
I am sure you are not supporting the Votes for Women movement - does that mean we were all wrong when we changed the law and women don't really want the vote?

RoundaboutSnail · 04/05/2018 10:42

I'm not convinced the Tories have moved further right. At least some of the polarisation comes from Labour moving so far to the hard left.

TooTrueToBeGood · 04/05/2018 10:46

Maybe we should have a referendum on whether we should have another referendum. Who decides that though? I guess we need a referendum to decide if we should have a referendum on whether we should have a referendum.

Bottom line, we had a referendum. It was poorly thought out and even more poorly understood, the political debate was an embarrassment and it didn't go the way many (including myself) wanted. But we had it, we got the answer, whether we like it or not, and now we have to move the fuck on.

Nikephorus · 04/05/2018 10:48

It's questions like this that makes me think they should be a minimum IQ for being allowed to vote...

Randomuser789 · 04/05/2018 10:59

I voted leave but didn’t vote UKIP so I have no idea where you got your theory from but I’d suggest putting it back!

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 04/05/2018 19:08

Maybe we should have a referendum on whether we should have another referendum.

I think the recent referendums have proven the point that the general public are too fucking stupid to be allowed to have a say.

You wouldn't let half of these people install your boiler or do the brakes on your car, not sure why you'd trust then with a whole country!!

HisBetterHalf · 04/05/2018 19:55

probably dont need to vote for them now thats brexits been voted for

Turnitupdrhill · 04/05/2018 19:57

Yes you do get to revote on other things every four years!

Eh? What do we get to 'revote' on every four years?

TooTrueToBeGood · 04/05/2018 20:27

I think the recent referendums have proven the point that the general public are too fucking stupid to be allowed to have a say.

Absolutely. There is a reason why we have a representative democracy and not an absolute democracy - 49% of the population are below average intelligence.

specialsubject · 04/05/2018 20:55

Smile although asking for a simple yes/no on a very complex issue so there is no answer doesnt help....

isthisspring · 04/05/2018 22:25

Sadly no, as both main parties have adopted Brexit as a policy, there is simply no need for them.

lhastingsmua · 04/05/2018 22:26

Hardly think it’s a total collapse. Their supporters still exist, they have just converted to tories instead

lhastingsmua · 04/05/2018 22:27

At this point I don’t think there will be a reverse of brexit or a second referendum unfortunately

LadyLauraOver · 04/05/2018 22:28

Ukip served it's purpose. It had one main goal which was achieved leaving it with no real reason to continue. The interesting part was watching the dispersal of their votes yesterday.
I don't think either a straight remain or a straight leave was ever the answer to the UK's future. The issues are so complex and intertwined.
I cannot see that forcing yet another money and time wasting vote really achieves anything beneficial. The World knows all about the first vote and would hardly trust the second one if the outcome were different and there is no guarantee it would be.
It's not all bad and it's not all wonderful. Some will be hurt and others will gain as it ever was throughout history.
My advice would be to be as frugal as possible, reduce as much debt (including mortgage) as possible and learn to provide for your family if times get hard. The UK does not currently grow enough food for it's population. This leaves us reliant on imports. Am I the only one sensing possible food shortages are looming in the future?

yorkshireyummymummy · 04/05/2018 22:35

God almighty!
Is there ANY REASON AT ALL why some remainers will not think it’s a good enough reason to want another vote??
There isn’t going to be another vote. Our departure from the EU has started. Stop banging on about it FFS.
EVERYBODY I know, leaver and remainers alike agree that another vote would be a terrible idea.

OP......I bet you’re a nightmare to play Monopoly with ........

BackforGood · 04/05/2018 22:41

YABU and somewhat ridiculous.
That's coming from someone who thinks it is an awful decision. However, it was put to the people in a referendum, and that is the decision that was made.
UKIP were set up to persuade the country to leave the EU. They succeeded. They've done what they set out to do. There's no reason for people to vote for them any more.

Barbaro · 04/05/2018 22:52

No. Would you be happy to have a revote if Remain had won?

I wish it had been remain. Sadly some people followed the blind. Sucks but that's life.

ilovesooty · 04/05/2018 23:52

UKIP actually came a very strong second in a ward not too far away from me. I suspect that vote was rooted in racism, pure and simple.

Mightymucks · 05/05/2018 01:42

A 1% swing to the Tories outside London? Does that suggest a brewing rebellion against government policy?

Why? The Tories increased their vote share by 6%, Labour only 4% and they equalled each other in total votes. For a government mid term who traditionally get bloody noses at local elections, that’s a great result.

Topseyt · 05/05/2018 03:21

UKIP was a one trick pony. They achieved their aim and are now irrelevant.

I voted remain and still think Brexit is a terrible idea. The one good thing is no longer having to hear Nigel Farage banging on every day. However, we still have the likes of Boris Johnson!

unbalancedBella · 05/05/2018 06:10

The Tory Party is now basically UKIP: committed to delivering Brexit whatever the cost. Labour are a softer version - which is why their opposition is so ineffective. The Lib Dem corpse twitched a bit last night but not enough to change anything.

I think, when we see what Brexit will actually mean (this Autumn?) it will satisfy no-one.

I voted Remain and will not "accept it". Brexit is a stupid, damaging idea and I will continue to say so.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 05/05/2018 06:35

Agh i'm sorry, but this is the sort of thing that makes people want to vote for UKIP and the other extremest leave parties, they feel their voice isnt being listened too. We, as a country, voted leave. You might not agree with it, i don't think its thd right thing at all, i think its at risk of damaging a 20 year peace in NI, have done sonce day one and that alone is terrifying, let alone all the other implications. But we have to accept the way the vote was. You might argue that the remainers voice isnt being listened too, thing is we had a chance, our views werent piwerful enough apparently (ok i know some people feel duped by certian claims made by the leave campaign) the vote sadly didnt go our way.

Yes we vote in a general election every 4 years, but the key word in that is general, we dont revote on spefic things, the last EU vote was in the 70's thats not every 4 years.

Of course theres a story every day, its called neogation, you dont just go in and go hay partner of over 40 years we're leaving we'll neogate our own trade deals with indevidal countries, our own boarder controls, our own everything in one day, we and they have to find away of comprimsing that changes and it takes time.

As For UKIP, yes it did have more policies, but the only one that really garnered any support was its leave promise? Its collapse is just showing people on the whole disagree with its racist, sexist, mysogynistic, policy but did want to leave the EU

bookworm14 · 05/05/2018 06:44

The UKIP vote collapsed because it was a single issue party which got what it wanted!

unbalancedBella · 05/05/2018 06:50

Sorry? I'm not supposed to say Brexit is fucking stupid and damaging because the people who voted Leave felt they weren't being listened to?

Well, we've listened to the Leavers for nearly two years after the referendum and ... what? No idea about how to avoid a border in Northern Ireland, no idea about what sort of Customs arrangements they want, no idea about what sort of trade agreements they'll get with other countries, no extra money for the NHS, etc, etc.

I have sympathy for people who voted Leave because they felt they were being screwed over by the system and wanted change. But Brexit won't make things better for them (by the Gov't's own analysis Leave areas like the North East will be worst affected).

When we see what Brexit will look like we should get to decide on the facts - not on slogans on busses.

Yarnswift · 05/05/2018 07:00

No. I voted remain and I live and work in Europe and am married to a European. Brexit will have negative effects for us personally and very negative effects on a lot of people we know

But - it was a democratic vote. I do understand why some people voted for it and I think much of the remain campaign was dreadful (basically calling people racist of the wanted out.) most people aren’t racist - they voted UKIP as a protest vote and now they got their way they no longer have a reason to vote for them

IF it can be shown that the campaign or vote was tampered with or there was illegal activity by either side then you have a case for a record. Unfortunately you don’t if you just don’t like the result.
