To hate Jo Wiley

Not personally obviously, surprisingly enough I don't know her, but I love the Radio 2 Drivetime programme and she is going to ruin it. I find her voice grating, she has a babyish breathy style that is highly irritating. The Drivetime show was perfect and now they have got rid of homework, foody Thursday with Nigel and they are getting rid of MATT!!!! Are they crazy???

I'm all for gender equality but why can't Jo share a show with Steve Wright as his show is already awful.

I know I may be getting this out of proportion but it feels like this show is part of my life and it's just gone.

MyDog This is the one I've signed. I believe there's another one on the go as well.

I'd play the Name Drop Drinking Game but I'd need a new liver by Wednesday.

wowfudge · 02/06/2018 16:26

@ikiboo - that made me laugh.

Dermot is better in the Saturday morning slot. His Saturday afternoon show was soooo dull. Ricky did a good job of interviewing Jess Glynne this morning -she comes across as being very hard work.

Even All Request Friday was ruined by Jo. They've made the wrong person the lead presenter imo (Jo) as the pair of them don't have a natural rapport or rythym. If Bob wants us to carry on putting up with it, they need to do some work on successful co-presenting.

wowfudge · 02/06/2018 16:41

@iklboo even!

Pinga · 03/06/2018 15:46

Have any of you considered that Jo Wiley a MNer! Why do people do this? Hatred is such a strong feeling to apply to someone who has not harmed you personally.

We arent obliged to enjoy listening to her and be polite about her here just because she might be a MNetter. She isnt obliged to read this thread with our moaning either.

TheKitchenWitch · 03/06/2018 19:24

I think it's an awful career move for her, and if she's got any sense at all she will rethink the whole thing.

Here's another petition that's going round

flumpybear · 05/06/2018 08:48

I don't mind Jo Whiley but she's a square peg in this slot - drive time needs fun and some craziness... Simon and the team don this well ... jo belongs in a more specialist slot
Zero chemistry and Simon, rightly, sounds put out

Come on R2 ... see some sense here!!

FredSheeran · 05/06/2018 09:15

I agree that Jo Whiley is probably really nice in real life, and I feel for both her and Simon Mayo, having this awkward arrangement forced on them by BBC management. They have very different presenting styles, and very different audiences. and have spent many years developing successful shows based around that. It's like all those new Dairy Milk bars: just because Mondelez owns Dairy Milk and Trident doesn't mean we need chocolate covered chewing gum.

BUT... God almighty. I listened to the Confessions podcast last night and had to switch off when she launched into her non-story about forgetting her passport while on holiday with those lovely, lovely guys, David Walliams and Matt Lucas, and asking the equally lovely head of Comic Relief to pop back and get it. Jo Whiley's style is very 'anecdotes about music industry guys I know really well' and Confessions is about OTHER PEOPLE TELLING THEIR STORIES. Other people, Jo.

redrubiesnmore · 05/06/2018 09:32

It turns out there really is a silver lining in every cloud!

Without all of this Jo Wiley business going on, I wouldn't have discovered Radio 6. I love it. Where has it been? Or where have I been?

Ruffian · 05/06/2018 09:34

Thing is, someone could be a massive name-dropper but still be interesting - still have something funny or pertinent to say about these famous people they've met.

JW's problem isn't that she's a name-dropper, it's that she's boring and too egotistical to realise it.

wowfudge · 05/06/2018 09:49

Last night's show was better - Jo was more upbeat. However she did tell an acedote about the Kooks and interrupt Simon to say she had a story about some dull crap she'd tell later.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 06/06/2018 20:11

Got in the car tonight with DD and Jo was droning on. DD said "why won't this woman let Simon Mayo speak?". So we switched over and listened to Capital.

Ruffian JW's problem isn't that she's a name-dropper, it's that she's boring and too egotistical to realise it.

AsTheMilesTheyDisappear · 06/06/2018 20:21

Simon was so good on his own. Funny, warm, uncool and friendly. Confessions and that guy with the mega laugh were brilliant.

Jo and Simon is horribly stilted and serious.

I don't need serious on the way home from work, wrestling the kids into homework and cooking tea. I want cheery silliness back.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 06/06/2018 20:41

Oh thank the Lord it's not just me!!! Drive time is now awful. I miss Matt and his booming laugh. Confessions are grim now. I don't listen anymore. Drive time with Simon was lovely. She's ruined it.

KitchenDancefloor · 06/06/2018 20:54

R1 drive time was Greg James interviewing Sir David Attenborough and being really generous with the callers who were asking him questions. I'm a convert.

Let's not mention the music

wowfudge · 06/06/2018 21:34

There's just one problem with switching to R1: Greg James is switching shows with Grimmy soon...

FourEyesGood · 06/06/2018 21:39

Like PPs, I have a problem with this thread and its title. I’m not a fan of Jo Whiley, but hatred is extreme and should be saved for the evil rather than the bland.

Ruffian · 06/06/2018 21:56

Well the thread isn't about hatred FourEyes it's a discussion and the title obviously isn't meant to be taken literally.

KitchenDancefloor · 06/06/2018 21:58

@wowfudge

I know. I'm trying to stay optimistic until then.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/06/2018 22:01

Wonder what the listening figures are now.

Geordiegirl1988 · 06/06/2018 22:01

I can't stand any of radio one . Hate the whole programme as it plays music that is so not my taste ! I don't know jo Wiley so I couldn't say your not being unreasonable but I do hate radio 1

cistersofterfy · 06/06/2018 22:22

I can't remember what day it was but they had what sounded like a lover's tiff. It was so awkward. Simon tried to make a joke and Jo said something about that animal not being able to talk. And then just silence in response and play the record.

Went down like a lead balloon. I was cringing.

LemonysSnicket · 06/06/2018 23:40

I had to transcribe an interview of her once. Took me 4 hours and she was v annoying.
