I knew i'd 'made it' in life when

i realised 90% of the plant pots in my house/garden are terracotta, not plastic. I used to dream of this and have added to my collection year on year. I now feel immense pride in the quality of my plant pots! AIBU to ask what small/insignificant things signify to you that you too have made it in life? (Not interested in metal cans on wheels/dwelling structures made of bricks or stone/jewellery/trophy partners Grin).

Owning wine carafes and using them
Learning how to fix my boiler/oven/washing machine
Owning three sets of best plates
Getting my businesses VAT registered
Booking my first holiday online
Owning power tools
Owning a tea chest and massive handmade cheese board with little silver markers for the cheese

Oh, and buying my own house, by myself, with my own money. It had been my goal since about 15 and it was lovely to tick it off the list. It still gives me joy to own my own property with no help from anyone else.

FrangipaniBlue · 01/05/2018 07:18

I'm told that a woman has made it when they have got to management and when she earns a lot of money and works a lot of hours.*

I think a person has made it when they are happy with their life regardless of status, money or keeping up with the Jones.*

@dayinlifeof just described me.... !

I knew I'd made it when I was sat in Business Class on an Emirates flight to Australia for work, sipping champagne all expenses paid.

slippynips · 01/05/2018 07:28

When I’ve got a dishwasher! My god that day can’t come quick enough

LanguidLobster · 01/05/2018 07:29

Are we supposed to make it?? I missed the memo.

I have some nice linen damask napkins...?

Smeddum · 01/05/2018 07:38

@slippynips that was a dream for me too, it’s been 5 months since I managed it and it really is as amazing as I thought it would be! Best invention ever!

Coming on to defend my mug drawer Grin

What’s wrong with that, it’s one of those deep ones and fits them all nicely...

Where does everyone else keep their mugs?

Phillipa12 · 01/05/2018 07:43

When my friends very elderly aunt with dementia, who also lives on her own with just family support at the moment said " yes i think i need some extra help, i would like a nice middle aged white lady, i think Phillipa12 would be perfect" (filter completely gone). I have actually been masquerading as the cleaner for a couple of months now with the full intention of being one of her carers! #ivebeencalledagrownup 😁

LanguidLobster · 01/05/2018 07:45

mammmamia three of mine are sitting next to me. Others just live where they are parked.

So you have a mug drawer? Curious!

NeverTwerkNaked · 01/05/2018 07:48

When we went swimming and DP and I got to swim lengths while the three older ones played nicely in the deep end. Admittedly youngest DD was else where otherwise I’d have been stood shivering in the shallow end. But it was a taste of life getting a bit easier and made all the trekking to swimming lessons feel worthwhile!

Digestivescusturds · 01/05/2018 07:49

I organised Christmas on my own and nothing was a last minute rush

InBlackwaterWoods · 01/05/2018 07:51

When I bought a vintage floral spoon rest to go beside my hob. It's the same as my mum and grandma had, I'm very precious about it! Felt like a grown up and all adulty and stuff.

Smeddum · 01/05/2018 07:53

@mammmamia my dad does! I keep mine in the cupboard above the kettle, for ease I suppose. It hadn’t occurred to me to use a drawer Grin

elderflowerandrose · 01/05/2018 07:58

Hosted Christmas in my own cottage for my whole family and it really was so much fun that year

moonlight1705 · 01/05/2018 08:14

I ordered wallpaper that cost £50 a roll just because I loved the pattern and because I could
No more cheap stuff from Homebase and I can even put it up myself.

Also love going into my greenhouse and watching things grow.

Librarybooksandacoconut · 01/05/2018 08:28

Not me, but my dgm told me she felt like a proper grown up when I told her she was going to be a great grandmother. She was 92.

catlover1987 · 01/05/2018 08:38

When my shampoo and conditioner matched.

IHateToCashew · 01/05/2018 08:50

When I bought a sensible sized TV rather than the massive curved monstrosity that would have taken up my entire living room.

mayhew · 01/05/2018 08:58

Paying off the mortgage in 12 years. Through thrift and common sense. I'll be forever grateful for the friend who explained to us over Sunday lunch that this was possible. It's made so many other things possible.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 01/05/2018 09:03

Coming on to defend my mug drawer grin

Oh thank goodness there's an explanation - I read that on the first page, and skipped to the end to ask about it... You must have better draws than me - I have to careful how much weight I put in mine..

I felt I'd made it, when we moved house, and I could go to Ikea and buy anything I fancied (the linen bedlinen for example.. although I'm a bit disappointed by it and might go back to cotton!)

The weird thing being, I must have grown up, because I walked around and felt that a lot of it was tat I didn't need :(

DollyLlama · 01/05/2018 09:04

Doing my first proper food shop and buying what I wanted and meal planning rather than constant ready meals and chocolate.

I still buy those but a lot less Blush

Another weird one on the same note, having to dedicate an entire cupboard to herbs and spices. I always dreamt of reading a recipe and thinking "I've already got that in the house". I'm getting there!

AndromedaPerseus · 01/05/2018 09:07

Realising there wasn’t anything in particular I wanted for Christmas or my birthday as I had everything I wanted and needed and if any of it needed replacing I could do so without worrying about the cost

mavismcruet · 01/05/2018 09:24

Buying a brand new bed. I’d always had second hand ones before, even mattresses. Having one that no one had ever slept on before was really special Smile

SheSparkles · 01/05/2018 09:27

Paying a decorator to paint the upstairs of the house instead of doing it myself. This only happened 2weeks ago 😂

gingergenius · 01/05/2018 09:28

When I got divorced!
