Was my colleague rude?

Someone mentioned a well known quite old song in the office today and I said I’d never heard of it.

Colleague retorts - really?! I mean you’re not even that young.

I’m in my 20s btw.

OP posts:

She could have phrased it better but you're not a teenager any more so she's right. I think people expect you to know more stuff like that once you're approx 25+. Like osmosis. Also, it's just a song. Not like you hadn't known a world war had happened or something.

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 30/04/2018 17:30

I have never heard an Ed Sheeran song, thought he was a comedian, perhaps I am mixing him up with Frank Skinner! just shows how much notice I take.

Loonoon · 30/04/2018 17:35

Off the top of my head, have you made comments in the past about her being older than you that might have rubbed her up the wrong way? That might explain her comment.

ScreamingValenta · 30/04/2018 17:38

It's only rude if you're ageist enough to think being 'not that young' is a terrible thing.

Thequeenisdeadboys · 30/04/2018 17:41

Lets guess the song then ?
Was it American Pie ?

PattiStanger · 30/04/2018 17:47

Unless there's some massive back story I don't see how that's rude. Different people have different concepts of what's old/young.

You're taking a general flippant comment far to personally imo, so she thinks 20s isn't young, so what? It's not like you can help how old you are.

Lacucuracha · 30/04/2018 17:47

Some people are jealous of younger people sadly.

Whilst I'd like to be back in my early 20s again, I want to be me in my 20s, not someone else.

Thequeenisdeadboys · 30/04/2018 17:48

Is it Like A Virgin ?

Thequeenisdeadboys · 30/04/2018 17:49

Wuthering Heights ?

Lacucuracha · 30/04/2018 17:51

Maybe OP could PM the song to those of us that said she was not being unreasonable?

Mightymucks · 30/04/2018 17:54

Was it Mr Blobby?

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/04/2018 17:55

Bohemian Rhapsody?

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/04/2018 18:08

Save your love for me. Renee and Renato Wink

Louiselouie0890 · 30/04/2018 18:17

Not rude, however you are a tad

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2018 18:38

Bohemian Rhapsody?
The Birdie Song?

LoveSugar I think you're confusing Ed Sheeran with the comedian Ed Byrne. An easy mistake as they're both quite nerdy and called Ed although that's where the similarity ends Grin

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/04/2018 18:41

It's that silly Friday song isn't it.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 30/04/2018 18:43
OpenthePickles · 30/04/2018 18:47

Heeeey Macarena???

pieceofpurplesky · 30/04/2018 18:50

I reckon aha take on me

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2018 19:04

A classic tune there purplesky

I'm thinking in a similar vein; Could It Be Magic, Take That

Are we close OP? Please come back, this is quite a fun thread for a rainy Monday. Smile

happypoobum · 30/04/2018 19:06

YABU - this doesn't sound remotely rude to me.

SouthernComforts · 30/04/2018 19:10

This is a pretty pointless thread if you spit your dummy out and won't tell us the song.

uservvy · 30/04/2018 20:41

In your 20's isn't that young, if in a different situation and you was told 'you're not old enough' would you find that offensive also?

Would a 10 yr old have known the song??

GrandTheftWalrus · 30/04/2018 20:54

I barely know who new artists etc are and I'm 33. But I never listen to the radio anymore and when we do listen to music it's songs we always listen to.

I know who ed Sheeran is but I don't know his latest stuff.

midnightmisssuki · 30/04/2018 21:01

Nah not rude. My older colleagues always say - how do you know that song, that song is way too old for you to know. I like old stuff - way better than some songs Of today. It’s just a remark - your being over sensitive.

We went to a U2 concert a few years ago and I was telling my nanny about it (she’s 24) she had no clue who U2 were - I almost fainted. Grin
