Was my colleague rude?

Someone mentioned a well known quite old song in the office today and I said I’d never heard of it.

Colleague retorts - really?! I mean you’re not even that young.

I’m in my 20s btw.

OP posts:
doctorcuntybollocks · 30/04/2018 16:14

I'm in my late 40's and am not the least bit sensitive about my age.

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 30/04/2018 16:15

I once caused utter consternation because I'd never heard of Simply Red

pigsDOfly · 30/04/2018 16:16

Failing to see what's rude about that remark, and what does 'in my 20s mean', are you 21 or 29 there's quite a difference.

And no not all women are sensitive about their age; I'm not now I'm nearly 70, and never have been.

halfwitpicker · 30/04/2018 16:17

Snooze.

What was the song btw

Singlebutmarried · 30/04/2018 16:17

@thefirstmrsosmond

I’m sure there’s many
That wish they’d never been subjected to Mick Hucknall 😂

pinkhorse · 30/04/2018 16:17

I'm not sensitive about age at all! What song was it?

procrastinationsupremo · 30/04/2018 16:18

I'm honestly laughing at the idea that people in their 20s are especially sensitive about their age, how ridiculous. Also, this is SO FAR from telling a woman in her 40s she's too old to have children. OP, it is sometimes annoying when people can't believe you haven't heard of a particular song/poem/TV show etc. but maybe she was trying to avoid saying it was 'before your time', which people also seem to find inexplicably offensive?

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 30/04/2018 16:19

Mildly snippy possibly. Annoying, possibly.

Not really rude though.

AmazingPostVoices · 30/04/2018 16:19

What would upset and offend you might shockingly not have the same reaction for another human being.

^ that was rather my point OP. You clearly were^ upset and offended. It wouldn’t have upset or offended me at all.

You can of course start a thread about anything you like. My point was more that I was surprised that anyone would think this was upsetting.

You asked what we thought OP, that was what I thought. given your response to me it seems like you might be a bit sensitive.

Iweird I’m not in the least sensitive about my age and never have been.

procrastinationsupremo · 30/04/2018 16:20

Grrrr strike-through fail, thought I'd finally got the hang of it! (Must be my age...)

hiblueblue · 30/04/2018 16:21

Snooze.

What was the song btw

Yeah because I’m really going to say after that comment.

You’d be proper shocked at the song too. Millions of views on YouTube.

Andylion · 30/04/2018 16:21

Unless colleague is always making reference to your age, and in a way that is insulting, no I don't this comment is rude.

I was never particularly sensitive about my age, and really not especially in my twenties.

supersop60 · 30/04/2018 16:22

She was rude. people look at me Shock because I have never watched Game of Thrones (for example). I don't care.
What was the song? perhaps it wasn't that famous in fact.

Nodnol · 30/04/2018 16:22

What was the song? I can’t judge her rudeness until I know.

pigmcpigface · 30/04/2018 16:23

Is it Gangnam Style? Grin

If she is generally a nice person, I think she probably meant 'You seem pretty clued up and not naive, I'd have thought you would know that', but she put it all wrong. Grin If she isn't, then this is just another way of being bitchy.

BevBrook · 30/04/2018 16:29

I once caused utter consternation because I'd never heard of Simply Red

Someone at work claimed she had never heard an Ed Sheeran song. Nobody could believe this, and a pleasant afternoon was spent playing snippets of Galway Girl, Shape of You etc on mobile phones, saying "You MUST have heard this one! In a shop or something?!"

Trinity66 · 30/04/2018 16:30

depends how old the song is

TheFirstMrsDV · 30/04/2018 16:31

What would upset and offend you might shockingly not have the same reaction for another human being

Are you upset and offended by what they said?

mostdays · 30/04/2018 16:32

I don't find that rude.

YaBasic · 30/04/2018 16:34

Aw OP. Please tell us the song. It might be a really good one I have never heard of either (this happens to me a lot, less YOLO and more You only live last decade...as I like songs or recognise them months or years after release). And now I have FOMO. Have you noticed these acronyms are making me appear older by the minute?
After the scandal and people saying the were leaving it, my other half said I suppose you'll be joining Facebook now then, will you?!
So dish! I might be impressed b you not knowing an Ed Sheeran track Wink

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/04/2018 16:35

Perhaps prepare some witty comebacks if your colleague has a habit of issuing cutting remarks? Play her at her own game.

Colleague: You're not even that young!

You: You're not even that nice/ ha ha I want to get on with some work today/ this is my bothered face.. and so on.

Nodnol · 30/04/2018 16:36

My husband does this! Drives me spare lol. Perfect came on in the car the other day and he was perplexed I knew this “new” song. It’s played about 80 times an hour at them moment, how could he have not heard even the chorus?

Nodnol · 30/04/2018 16:37

*the, not them.

honeyishrunkthekid · 30/04/2018 16:39

Well being in your twenties isn't as young as being in your teens.
She wasn't saying anything rude.
I wouldn't be offended by that at all. Maybe her tone was rude? Her words weren't

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 30/04/2018 16:40

I want to know the song!!

I think it’s a bit rude, but I wouldn’t be too rude. If you wanted to be snippy you could always say ‘oh, you’re too young to understand’ 😉

I went back to college at 28 and the 18/19 year olds were amazed/shocked/disgusted that I only knew about Kim kardashian and can’t tell the difference between the others.
